I’m Jenny and I’m a huge Final Fantasy IV nerd. I write fanfic and record podfics. You can find me under the username jenneh in most places. I spend an unhealthy amount of time thinking about FFIV, but I seem to be in good company.

Final Fantasy IV Week, Day 6 Prompts: White Magic & Black Magic : JobSwap, Studying, Recovery

“Look at this.” Yang unfurled a scroll. “I spent much time in the Sylph’s library while I recovered. They have many texts on healing spells and techniques. With study, you could learn them.”

“I can’t use White Magic anymore,” Rydia said.

“What happened?” Yang asked.

“I decided to focus on Black Magic and Summons,” Rydia answered. “I swapped defense for offense.”

Yang rerolled the scroll. “I see.”

“Rosa would love these,” Rydia offered, sensing his disappointment.

The girl he remembered, and the woman Rydia had become weren’t the same, Yang realized. “Good idea,” he said, although the words were strained.

Final Fantasy IV Week, Day 5 Prompts: Love & Hatred: Wedding, War, Family

As the wedding procession made its way through Baron, most cheered their love for the royal couple. One man, however, threw a bucket of blood at the carriage.

“Murderer!” the man cried, pointing an accusing finger at Cecil. “You killed my brother!” His accent was Mysidian and his face, now that Cecil really looked closely, was familiar, except Cecil remembered it twisted with pain, begging for mercy as Cecil brought his sword down—

“You bring nothing but war and death!” the man declared as the guards hauled him away.

As long as there is hate, Zeromus needlessly warned from afar.

Final Fantasy IV Week, Day 4 Prompts: Truth & Lies: Delusion, Confession, Disguise

The girl slept or at least pretended.

Cecil sat on the other bed, his sword across his lap; the dark blade glittered in the candlelight. Cecil peered closer and saw his reflection’s judgmental eyes.

You disguise yourself as a hero and perpetuate this delusional lie that you are worthy of redemption, Cecil’s reflection accused him. You’ll never face the truth or confess your crimes; you’ll always just be Odin’s weapon.

“I cannot be better until I do better,” Cecil whispered.

The door was thrown open and several Baron soldiers entered.

Cecil stood, his sword in hand; it felt somehow heavier.

FFIV Week Day 3

posting this early because i have raiding tomorrow and thus will absolutely forget. also look i can write about other people.

FFIV Week Day 3 -- youth, undead (Golbez, Scarmiglione)

The summoner was only a boy, though a well-worn one with hair as white as an old man's. He was lying in a dug-up grave clutching a skull in his arms -- part of the ritual, perhaps. 

Shrouded in filthy fabric, the archfiend of earth scuttled closer. Grass wilted and died beneath his claws, the earth began to stink of rotting meat, and soon he was leaning over his summoner close enough to touch.

"You are Death, are you not?"

A strange question. "That cannot be summoned, boy. It is death's absence you have called."

"Oh." A sluggish stream of blood began to ooze from the boy's nose. "I want to die, you see. But I cannot do it myself."

"My presence blights the very air you breathe. It will kill you before long." 

"He'd save me, I think. He wouldn't let me die. But I want to see for sure." The boy spoke quietly, as though afraid of who might overhear. "Will you stay with me? Until I'm almost dead, at least?"

"No living creature has ever found my company agreeable." 

"Not true," the boy said. "Maggots live on corpses, right? "

Scarmiglione's jaw creaked, in the memory of a smile.

Prompts : Death & Birth - Bad Endings - Undeads - Youth

Inspired from this event happening in the japanese novelisation of the game. In this fiction, Kain would be able to approach his father’s dying dragoon in Baron Castle basement and this is how he would have become the leader of the Dragoons.

Final Fantasy IV Week Day 3 Prompts: Death & Birth: Bad Ending, Undeads, Youth

Scarmiglione knew death and birth were intimately intertwined; one could not exist without the other.  As he stood in the dirt of a dug-up grave, he considered the fresh corpse.

The youth had been a Baron marine, who met an early death at the powerful hands of a monk during the Fabul siege. But in every bad ending there was opportunity, Scarmiglione knew well.

Scarmiglione wrapped his death magic around him and the marine gasped with lungs that would never taste air again. The cycle of death and birth would continue until all were transformed.

Scarmiglione smiled; it was beautiful.

Rydia saving our butts as an adult is my FAVORITE video game introduction! I know that technically we already knew her, but I genuinely thought she was dead from Leviathan.

I remember the rising dread I felt throughout the boss fight and my utter relief and shock when Rydia appears, and the whole thought, "Wait, is that? No, it can't be!" What a magical gaming moment.

FFIV Week 2025

Day 2: Near & Far — Home

Rydia was torn. She'd spent half her life with the Eidolons, and remembered them far better than her human parents. The remnants of Mist no longer beckoned her. But Cecil... Cecil was like a father to her. Anywhere he was automatically felt like home.

Now that everything was over, where would she go? Baron was too near her childhood loss, but the Eidolon lands were so far away. She wanted to believe that she could have both, that she would keep in touch, or travel often, but she knew the truth: to choose one home was to lose the other.

“It’s not far.” Cecil squinted against the desert sun. In the distance, a mountain range loomed large.

“Farther than it looks,” Edward replied. “Crossing over will take days.”

“Oh.” With his helmet removed, Cecil’s disappointment was obvious.

“Rosa will be okay,” Rydia said, full of girlish optimism. “We’ll get back in time with the Sand Pearl.”

“And then we’ll go home together and fix everything,” Cecil said, now determined.

Rydia and Edward exchanged a look. No matter how far they traveled or what treasures they collected, they could never return to the homes they knew.

“Let’s go,” Cecil said, unaware.
