Graduation: an update

Walking out the doors today after my very last class at Columbia–Greene Community College​, the wind was cold on my face. It was a bit unceremonious - I'm invited to walk at graduation in the spring, and I'll get my diploma in the mail - and yet it felt like the world was suddenly rushing before me. My time there is done, I have graduated college for the first time, and not the last.

I have earned my Associate's degree in criminal justice at 18, and the reason I say this is because when you're young no one will listen to you. No one values your opinion, no one thinks you're experienced or capable enough, and yet here I am. I made it. I guess the point is, you can make it, too. Even though it feels like just another day this is something to be proud of. Even though it feels insignificant compared to everything else I'm about to face, but if T.S. Eliot is convinced the world ends with something as small as a whimper, maybe you don't need something much bigger to begin. I know this.

I know this because the next part of my life just began - and it started with a breeze.

The Height Difference

You remember the days crushing orange peels,

sprayed across a lunch table; these are your friends,

your world is very small.

You didn’t know much about first class citizenship, 

civil movements, real anger - small girl, 

in a smaller school, a small, small world.

Now with your anger like rolling thunder

frustrations like an earthquake, all you want to do 

is ball everything up into a pill easy enough to swallow.

Not easy, but easy enough. 

That’s all you wish for lately.

Now that the world is so big

and so sharp, all you want 

is to shrink it back down to the size it was 

when people could still convince you

that you were ever anything but tall.

When I kiss her a certain way she holds my head

like it might roll off my shoulders if she doesn’t.

Another way with her breath hot on my cheek,

and she’s the sea under my hands.

She grips my neck like it’s something sturdy but precious,

and suddenly, I am awake. Suddenly in this tired,

tired way of living, I would not close my eyes.

It’s All in the Wrist

Forgive the heart that beats the loudest;

that thundering giant, its unsteady beat.

When she loves like a murmur

all you can do is follow her rhythm.

Let her dance in front of you, even if you don’t dance.

Even if it makes no sense, let her move,

remind you how this felt when your bones didn’t creak.

Let her move you.

That Heart, That Animal

There is some beast inside you. Sometimes thrashing to get out,

sometimes begging to be tamed, and always uneasy. 

Always searching. Always changing with the wind 

because it’s easier. Because wild things can never be still.

Wild things never stay.
