||Hallucination||

Arden hadn’t slept for four days, it was far from a record for him but he was always prepared for mild hallucinations after day three. One of the perks of his life, he assumed. He found himself at the diner he frequently haunted when the only people to be found on the streets of New York were either drunk, or trying to get drunk. His head was spinning and his eyes burned from lack of sleep. He was aware he was hallucinating. He figured it out when the waitress at the diner poured his coffee, staring deadpan into his eyes as the cup overflowed. “It’s your fault,” she said. That’s what they always said. He blinked and his cup was filled perfectly, the waitress smiling.

Arden’s eyes flicked up to the only other person in the diner, a girl in a booth near him with dark brown eyes. Their eyes met and the girl’s expression changed suddenly, looking irritated.  He blinked and the girl’s face was the same as it had been before… She must have been another hallucination, he reasoned. ‘Why wasn’t she blaming him then?’

Charlie smiled softly as the other spoke, passing the burning cigarette to the stranger, his hands finding themselves in his hoodie pockets as soon as they were free. He, know that he was here, wasn’t exactly sure why he had come over in the first place. A cold sweat broke out of the back of his neck, anxiety making his head droop so he was staring at his worn out sneakers. “Charlie—” the blonde mutters, sparing a glance up at the stranger. Well, no, they weren’t strangers now. He knew he name. His full name. Arden Sayre. It was a nice name. As nice as a name could get he supposed.

After what he could only describe as the most painfully awkward silence, Charlie could only assume that he was feeling especially lonely tonight, and that’ why he was seeking out the company of some stranger on the streets of New York. It was dangerous, and he knew that. “I…I saw you hanging out. I was just sitting over there, and thought maybe we could kinda chill for awhile. If that’s not too weird…” Charlie almost completely expected to be turned down. He was no stranger to rejection.

Arden accepted the cigarette from the other and took a long drag, letting the smoke fill his lungs painfully. He held the smoke there for a moment before releasing it slowly in a long stream of acrid smoke, feeling the burn from the combination of tobacco and chemicals as long as possible. He passed the cigarette back to the other and attempted, however unsuccessfully to hide the cough that pushed from him in reaction to the cigarette. He nodded in recognition to Charlie, noting that he hadn’t given Arden a last name. He chastised himself once more for his own carelessness.

With the silence came a creeping paranoia that this man wasn’t there with him at all, but likely a hallucination. It had happened before, but normally not until Arden had been awake for a couple more days. Normally his hallucinations blamed him more, this guy seemed to be having just as bad a night as Arden was. When Charlie broke the silence Arden was relieved. “Yeah—okay. That’d be fine,” he gestured to the spot next to him. “Are you from around here?”

Charlie didn’t smoke often, it normally made his stomach feel queasy, however he thought that the nicotine would ease his frayed nerves a little. So, he took a long drag of the cigarette, sucking the smoke into his lungs and holding it there until it burned the soft tissue in his throat. He hisses, letting the white puffs spiral out of quivering lips. It was nearing three in the morning, and he sat quietly under a street lamp. The city was alive and buzzing, people passing and not giving him a second look. He didn’t mind. No, he liked it. He was invisible. A place like this, it was better that way.

However, on occasion, another person would catch Charlie’s gaze and he’s interest would peek. The blonde saw him, tired eyes and a distant, glazed look. it was one he knew he wore as well. His chest ached. To his own surprise, Charlie was on his feet and shuffling over to where the stranger was seated on the side of a building. His hand is outstretched, “W-Wanna smoke?” curls fall into his eyes as he stammers out the awkward greeting, “I mean…You look like you could use one.”

Arden wasn’t even sure what he was doing outside at this point. He had no real reason to be out, other than not being in. His eyes burned with tiredness and his head was starting to spin. A guy with curly hair sitting under a street lamp smoking seemed to be the only other person sitting still. Arden started to feel like the other might be watching him. He pushed the thought away, ‘he’s not watching you. There’s no way he’s watching you.’ 

Suddenly the other started to walk towards him. Arden froze, eyes wide with surprise. This guy had been watching him. His mind started to race, trying to logically explain why this stranger was walking towards him. He sifted through musicians and acquaintances, and nothing in his head seemed to click with this guy. He was about to stand up and walk away when the stranger offered him a cigarette. Something about this person was intriguing, so he stayed. Not like he had anything better to do anyway. “Sure,” he answered simply. “Arden Sayre,” he nodded in greeting to the other. He scolded himself for giving this stranger his last name, his exhaustion making him careless.
