Childhood of the Starlings
Due to their roots of humans and aliens merging together, Starlings have an incredibly high mortality rate, as alien or even human infant disease show up more often. It is not uncommon for Starling children to be stillborn or be born with fatal genetic features.
Should any coupole turn out with two or more children, the eldest is instilled with the role of protecting their youngest siblings, especially if they are born on a ship and pirates or raiders attack. Older siblings are generally taught how to use basic weapons, and some may be taught how to take over their parent’s jobs and release the lifeship in case of emergency.
While many raiders and pirates, and even other races, sneer and jeer at the practice, this helps boost the population of the Starlings and instills life-long bonds between family. However, this also means that after adulthood passes, many Starling children feel a sense of loss. Twins or Triplets are considered a blessing as a whole to the Starling race. Because they are so rare (One may not be born in even a lifetime), they are protected more than any other. The Starling which came out first is marked the oldest, and wears a red ribbon tied around the wrist. Later in life that same ribbon will be attached to a string and tied to the neck. They have the same responsibilities as any other elder Starborn. Twins or Triplets are generally identified by color, with the eldest always being red. They are raised in such a way that sometimes it is emotionally painful for them to be separated, and it is always the Eldest that makes the decisions. After adulthood, it is common practice to enlist Triplets or Twins into the Navigational sector, as their combined teamwork makes things just a bit more efficient. —-
Because of the militarism structure of the Starlings society, children often play games that involve some aspect of fighting and/or play fighting. Elder children often lead a game of Doni Dani (Doh-nee Dah-nee) which is a mix of hide-and-go-seek, and Capture the Flag, with their younger siblings and a few friends. On school grounds, playing Doni Dani on the playset with sticks as swords and small pebbles as arrows is popular, as is Rees-Dani (Ree-sah-dah-nee), a war/tag game where two opposite sides each take a prisoner, and fight the other in order to take back their prisoner. Advanced games include having spies, having more than one prisoner, and using wooden weapons instead of tagging one another. —- Because of the mortality rates in babies, children are cherished and rarely punished. Elder siblings are depended on in place of parents to teach what is right and wrong, while singular children are often given a ‘godparent’, which could either be one of the parent’s trusted friends, or one of the parent’s older siblings. They step in when one or both parents are away. . However, the eldest of the siblings is usually trusted enough to be home alone or out in the world by themselves, provided their siblings are with them.
