Will there ever be more meatspace codes?
Great question! Uh, not sure.
Meatspace Ephemera is one of two things I've made that a nonzero amount of people still actively care about, and I consider it some of my best work. Therefore, I'd really really like it to be playable indefinitely.
The server architecture is a goddamn mess and breaks in a way that has to be fixed every three months.
The code system requires me to manually create new codes, then put them on those document images with a GIMP script I've lost, then send them to people whenever they're requested.
Both of these problems demand I be the constant caretaker of the game (like Emily-Bot, I suppose), and I just can't do that indefinitely, so, we need something better. The former problem can be fixed with a bit of work, but the latter will require huge changes to automate.
Maybe the whole code system gets replaced, idk. The code system was designed for when the game was just an art school project intended to be played by people I knew and people those people knew, not strangers on Tumblr who would post the code publicly. The game became something different, and maybe I need to respond to that. (Then again, I liked those 'new code' Tumblr posts. I'll think about it.)
Anyway, the point is that all of this will require at least a few days work, and I don't have a few days spare right now. There's so many repairs to do that I might well try to 'remaster' the thing, but then again, what hubris must I have to think I'm worthy of changing 18-year-old Ada's work. Maybe just some bug fixes.
So, if anything's going to happen, it's not going to happen until the summer, and don't hold me to that. I really want this thing to be playable again, even if its being unplayable is thematically resonant lol. Just give me time and I'll see what I can do. Thanks for caring <3
