Adalind enjoys storms. Not even just sitting inside and listening as it rages on outside; she’ll literally go out into the storm without a single care.

Seasons

Adalind could go years without noticing the passage of time. Seasons are mostly irrelevant to her, though she usually isn’t fond of summer.

Could Adalind move into one house and not have it be haunted by someone? No, wait…this was different. This voice speaking so closely to her ear could, if she was to be believed, interact more freely with solid objects than most of the dead she encountered. Maybe not quite a poltergeist though, since she obviously maintained her capacity for language. And had a nice voice. That was beside the point.

“Alright. That sounds unnecessary, but alright,” she said with a shrug, not actually minding the presence itself much. Stranger things had happened before. “Make sure you reattach them at some point, preferably on the side.”

“You will,” The Faceless Old Woman told her, “You’re in a new place now. You’ll be amazed by the things you can burn here. Like small rodents. And how else can you prove to the Sheriff’s Secret Police that you’re not some book-loving pervert?”

“The teeth come later,” she said, “You’d be amazed how often you can steal them. How easy it is….” She moved her hand to Adalind’s cheek, perhaps imagining the teeth through the flesh, how easy it would be to take them. Or perhaps just appreciating the cheek.

Adalind was half-tempted to make some comment about how she would be highly unlikely to be a pervert, being ace and everything. She decided not to, since she probably meant some other meaning of the word. She still didn’t plan to burn any books or steal any teeth.

“I’m not here to protect my reputation. Allow them to assume whatever they want and I’ll stick with my books. Shamelessly,” she said firmly, and resumed reading.

Voice

It’s sometimes clear from Adalind’s voice that she used to be a military leader. While she does prefer to keep a more refined tone, she’s more than capable of sounding like she’s barking out orders while barely having to raise her voice at all. She does a fair enough job of taking on the accent of wherever she is, although when she has enough to drink she’ll slip back into her old, proto-Germanic accent.

“You have one. Everyone here has one. Where else would you store the ash of the books you have burned, or the teeth you have stolen?” The Faceless Old Woman gently stroked her fingers down Adalind’s arm as she spoke.

“And yes, I would. I need access to the internet for many reasons, not the least of which is destroying the status of people who I deem unnecessary. And I want to look up the nutritional value of spiders.

“In case you haven’t noticed from all of the centuries you’ve apparently spent living in my home, I don’t typically burn books or steal teeth.” Adalind could still see movement out of the corner of her eye, but couldn’t feel the fingers on her arm and said nothing about it. “But I'll keep you informed once I have it set up.”

She attempted to focus on the book in her hands, but this conversation was pretty distracting. It wasn’t every day she spoke with an unfamiliar sort of being.

Scent

Adalind typically just smells like a clean human, with a trace of whatever sort of shampoo or soap she uses. It’s often coconut, since she enjoys that particular scent.

“The handles of your mugs were on the wrong side,” The Faceless Old Woman retorted, as if it were obvious, “It was time for you to know this. The mugs were all wrong, your sink is leaking, and your jar of ash is running low.”

Her normally calm, clear voice faltered a little as she continued, “As a… a guest  in your home, I would appreciate it if you kept it in appropriate order. Have you got the WiFi set up yet?”

And here Adalind had thought she could catch a rest now that she had finished moving in. “I don’t have a jar of ash,” she stated. Then again, this was one of the more unusual towns she had lived in. “Or I shouldn’t. I don’t intentionally keep one around...”

Never mind that. It didn’t matter. “Anyway, setting up WiFi wasn’t one of my highest priorities. Do you want the password once I get it done?” After all, the Faceless Old Woman was technically a guest, albeit an uninvited one.

As far as Adalind sees it, she could have all the time in the world to wait. Yet she sees no point in doing so when she could be taking action.

Adalind went silent for a moment. Yes, she sometimes forgot exactly how old she was. She’d be the first to admit to that. But that was beside the point. Where she lived now, many people forgot their age, even those younger than she was.

“Home is such a relative term. So are ‘house’ and ‘place of residence’, honestly,” she pointed out before shaking her head. “Anyway, if you’ve been secretly living in my home for so long, is there a particular reason you’re just now making yourself known?”

Adalind doesn’t need to live in comfort, let alone luxury, but she loves to do so when she can.
