I really like seeing characters being surrounded by all that plush. Being cozy and safe.

Why does he have so much trouble connecting to people? Because he genuinely really struggles to pick up on one of his species' main forms of nonverbal communication and as a result talks people's ears off in an attempt to over compensate. It doesn't work. Especially because, since he can't really feel them, his is often overly friendly and unfortunately open and it can weird people out.

Why did he latch so hard onto human media? Because he finally felt like he wasn't missing out on something. There wasn't this secret extra layer of emotional depth he was missing out on. And also the idea that he wouldn't Need a working field to interact with humans, because we don't have them. He wouldn't stand out (for that at least)
