I think after like 7 years i've finally figured out what to do with mettuo and erxian

I would like to propose that the purpose the mirthful messiah cult serves in alternian culture is to perform carnival in a bakhtinian sense, and i think this is a conscious decision on behalf of AH and the hiveswap/friendsim writers -- definitely AH, the clown enthusiast has absolutely read bakhtin lol

anyhoo erxian's whole thing has always been that they're the darkest and most violent of my trolls (i do try to stick to the comically violent tone of hivebent with my characters as best i can, but i'll admit it, my highbloods are pretty soft overall), which put me in a bind because when i write a character like that I want to give them an internal motivation as to WHY they are so violent that feels stronger or as strong as that of my other particularly violent characters, and isn't rehashing an idea i've already used -- there would for example obviously be an element of societal obligation, but having that be their main motivation would be boring because it's more compelling in the context of xiphia's character. i also wanted them to (on the surface) fully embrace the mirthful messiah religion because I already have a character who was raised in a religious community and rejected it, and it's lustra.

i think basically what i'm getting at is that i try to avoid repeating character tropes because i'm that kind of autistic*, and i only have 1-2 character ideas a year lol

*which would feel artificial in a more naturalistic setting, but this is homestuck we're talking about, where every character is a snowflake and if they have overlapping themes or interests it's a purposeful self-reference or parallel**

**this does mean that for me making fantrolls is often an exercise in 'balancing the books' wrt character traits, but i quite like doing that
