I'm re watching supernatural because I hate myself and I can't help but think about how much better the show would be if the main cast (Sam, Dean and Cas) were all girls. Because on one hand it would probably make the show (and the fandom) way less misogynistic and easier to tolerate if it had women in the main cast who weren't just for sex appeal or maternal figures who die immediately. Plus I'm obsessed with the idea that John would try to push a fem Dean into a more traditionally feminine role by making him be Sams care taker and that being part of the reason that Dean tries to act more masculine. On the other hand I just think Butch Dean and Yuri Destiel would be hot.

The Problem with the Twilight Renaissance.

This may be a little rambly and disorganized so I'm sorry if this is confusing, and I would also like to give a disclaimer that I don't want to hate on people who enjoy this series in a healthy way while acknowledging the flaws in the story. I also haven't looked into any twilight content on tumblr so I apologize if I say something another creator has said before.

Part 1: Misogyny

Twilight is even more harmful to audiences because the book is marketed toward young and teenage girls. I myself read this book when I was around eleven years old and although I only read it after being explicitly told by my mother that the book was misogynistic and an example of an unhealthy relationship I can only imagine the affect that this book would have on young readers without that disclaimer. I understand the fact that in the modern day die-hard twilight fans tend to be adults who feel a lot of nostalgia for the series but that doesn't change the fact that Twilight is a YOUNG ADULT novel. I don't want to go to much into the sexism of Twilight because many many other people have discussed this and I don't want to just rephrase other peoples points. However I will discuss how the discussion of twilight being sexist changed to the discussion of how twilight hate was sexist, and to be clear both of those statements are true. When twilight came out a lot of the criticism was fueled by misogyny and homophobia, however there were also a lot of young women, people of color and indigenous people who spoke out against twilight and the harm it causes. Recently I have seen a lot of people excusing all twilight criticism as "internalized misogyny" or "pick me behavior". While completely ignoring that while some older twilight hate was sexist so was the book. I mean look at the character of Rosalie or how the book treats marriage and motherhood as the most important thing a woman can do.

Part 2: The misrepresentation of indigenous people.

The Quileute tribe is a VERY REAL tribe whose beliefs and culture were severely misrepresented by Twilight. Twilight became a massively successful series that made an insane amount of money and although the Quileute tribe gained increased tourist revenue after twilight they did not receive a cent of the mass amounts of money twilight gained. The representation becomes especially viscous with the indigenous women in the series like Leah and Emily. I'm gonna link the website for the Quileute move to higher grounds fund. They are attempting to relocate important community resources to higher land to avoid flooding and tsunamis.

I'm not indigenous nor do I have any ties to the Quileute tribe so I'd like to share a video essay made by an indigenous creator because she has a lot of takes that I haven't seen. I highly encourage that you check it out because it is a great and insightful video.

Part 3: Racism

Stephenie Meyer intentionally prevented the director of the first twilight movie from adding in more racial diversity to the movie specifically within the Cullen family. Although Catherine Hardwicke did manage to include more diversity within Bella's friend group and Laurent, Bella's friends are barely in the story especially in later installments and Laurent is a villain who dies in the second movie. There is also the absolutely wild claim that Stephenie Meyer mad stating that vampires undergo "Beautification" which causes vampires to lose skin pigmentation, the book also constantly describes the vampires paleness as beautiful. Overall any non-white characters are very exploited we can see this clearly in the fourth book where the amazon characters are described as "feral" and "uncivilized".

Part 4: conclusion

Liking twilight does not make you a bad person, most fans are drawn to it because of nostalgia. But it is very important that you do not blindly consume this type of media and that you listen to voices of people who may have been hurt by this series. if walking hurts/exhausts you on a regular basis, canes and rollers are for you, no matter how young you are

we have free will—if doing something "out of the ordinary" makes life easier for you, do it
