December 2014 #PayItForward Honoree--Kemisha Denny

Kemisha Denny attended George Mason University and received a degree in Health Promotion. At GMU, Kemisha was heavily involved with the Caribbean Students Association (CSA) and served as Ms. GMU CSA. She always had a passion for sexual health and trying to understand the cause of the high rates of STDs amongst youth. Thus, Kemisha began volunteering with the Wellness Office at GMU and eventually worked her way to being a part of the planning team for events such as HIV Awareness Week. After completing her degree at GMU, Kemisha went on to intern at FAHASS (Fredericksburg Area HIV/AIDS Support Services). During her time there, she began to understand medical case management and prevention services. After a few months, Kemisha was offered a full time position with the organization as a Prevention Specialist, where she would be providing, HIV Testing and Counseling, and Education and Outreach Services to the Fredericksburg area and the surrounding 12 counties the organization serves.

Kemisha is an industrious young woman who is actively involved in the community. During her time serving as a Prevention Specialist at the Fredericksburg Area HIV/AIDS Support Services, Kemisha has conducted presentations that provide education, and testing and counseling services at the local schools and colleges, other community organizations, homeless shelters, neighborhoods, and church events. Despite the difficulty of the work, Kemisha conducts herself with the utmost professionalism and provides a safe environment to learn. Using her understanding of the epidemic and calmness, she is able to make people comfortable enough to effectively spread the word about HIV prevention. She works hard to lower the stigma around HIV and hopes that by educating others, she can help decrease the high numbers of new infections, especially among people of color. In the future, she wants to help make strides and fight against the rising HIV/AIDS epidemic in the Caribbean. Through her efforts, Kemisha has made and continues to make a positive difference in the lives of those she helps.
