Oh, Mother… What have I done?
"headcanon that Norman secretly also has a drag persona called Mother that also happens to be a murderous 50s housewife. I bet Dylan would be like 'honestly I prefer the drag queen to the murderer option so you have my okay'
"id rather go to ur drag show then have to hear about another murder tbh"
"wait lemme change that. id rather go to ur drag show then have to hear about anything remotely creepy in general"
'I'd rather you had a collection of wigs then a collection of dead animals'
"id rather watch u 'beat ur face' *dylan confused face bc he doesn't know what that means* than watch u stuff a dead animal”
'stuff bras, not animals’

✘ — mother:
In no way did the blonde think that things between she and Norman would be the way that they currently were. She knew they would both be happier and better off if they could just get along for more than 24 hours again, but she wasn’t exactly sure on how to fix their issues. They just seemed to be coming back up when she thought they had been washed down the drain. What happened to them? What changed? They were attached to the hip, two pieces of fabric sewn together with the strongest, most unbreakable thread. All they used to need was each other to get by. No one else could break them apart. They had a passion for each other, more than any couple she had ever met. It was an unconditional, unbiased, non-judgmental kind of love.
Being home with Norman was all Mother had ever wanted. He was the only man she needed, the only one who quenched the fire in her soul. She could never replace him. He had her heart and he understood her in a way that most failed to comprehend. No one else “got her” the way that Norman could. He didn’t have to try to see things through her eyes, it just came naturally. Others didn’t know nor care about her opinions or her thoughts, let alone her past. They didn’t give a shit how much pain she had been in and experienced, the things she witnessed. All they did was see a wacky, stressed out lady and her crazy son. They had no idea what was really lingering under the surface that was their world.
Did the “dead woman” not want her pride and joy to have friends? A social life? Not exactly, but she didn’t want to have to worry about him and what he was doing with said people, either. If she wasn’t around him to see what he was up to, how could she possibly protect him or intervene if need be? If anything bad ever happened to him, the whole town of White Pine Bay would feel her wrath. So far, the “friends” that she had heard of weren’t really too impressive to Mother’s taste, especially not that Loomis chick. First off, she’s a married woman and should be spending time with her husband and not bugging Norman. Second, the fact that she did have a spouse made Mother very concerned that she was going to do something to hurt her kindhearted son and take advantage of his sweet nature. If she did go that far, Mother would have no choice but to step in and take care of her it.
Mother wasn’t really thinking much when she slammed the cleaning tool down. She had allowed her anger to guide what her hands were doing. “It better not be broken…” She muttered under her breath, biting her lip. Norman would be so mad at her. What if he shoved her in the closet again and not just when there were visitors who stopped by? Took away her privileges that she was rewarded? He really could just buy a new one, but business wasn’t doing as well as they had anticipated for the time being, so a new sweeper would just be another added on expense for Norman to think about.
“Good…I’m glad it hurts…” Mother thought to herself, not allowing such words to slip off of her tongue in front of Norman. Somehow though, she was sure he knew exactly what was in her mind without even moving her lips to talk. She wondered if she had taken things too far, did too much. No, of course she didn’t. She was his Mother, his legal guardian even if she wasn’t physically present according to the public and if she had to take harsh measures to make sure he wouldn’t think twice about making the same mistake more than once, so be it.
The pictures on the walls in the hallway shook with a fury from the weight of the door being slammed and her feet kicked across the carpeted stairs, being careful not to trip on her own shoes. She yelped upon hearing Norman’s bedroom door open and searched around for somewhere to hide. He couldn’t find her. He was going to yell at her, maybe even hurt her back or worse. She never knew with him. Options being limited to where she could go, she ran into the living room and pulled back one of the curtains, making sure all of her was concealed. She held her breath with a pinch to her nose and a hand covered over her mouth while she waited for her fate to be revealed.
Through everything, through bothof their whole entire lives together, the outsiders had always had gluttony for judgement towards them. Nobody ever understood that their bond was special, not something to ponder on or double-take and wonder how it could be so unbreakable. People had always liked to make up delusions and build reputations for them, as if there was something mad and unspeakable going on in their home (which sometimes, there was) but Norma and Norman NEVER let that phase them and break them apart. Why now had the way their life been adapted to caused something bitter between them? A threat to clip the cord between their hearts to send the both of them never able to use it again? It was a dark water that Norman refused to drown in.
Norman had too much FAITH in the both of them to let Mother drown in it either.
But what the son didn’t realize was that perhaps it wasn’t all Mother who needed to do the changing. Perhaps his own vices were tainting their paradise as well as hers. They were EQUALS in the end, of course (something Norman had always been a firm believer in), and sometimes Norman tends to be one for not fully considering how his mother will feel in these sorts of situations. How she’ll really feel from his actions. Yes, he THRIVES in empathy for her and her only but he’s naive as well. Still in the end, it’s hard. It’s more than simply being home as much as he can and cutting off his new friend. The friend that reminds him of Mother so very much (a part of Mother that has somehow gotten lost ever since they had to begin faking her death).
It’s something much more. It’s about letting GO of this hostile behavior on his side and making Mother see that it was time for her to accept that a life was something Norman had to lead outside of their life at home. In this house. People would surely get suspicious if the young man was stuck at his property all the time, wouldn’t they? At least that had to be the excuse for now. If Norman admitted he felt a deep attraction to Madeleine, everything would go bad. Mother wouldn’t like that. Right now he had to focus on WHY Mother felt enough anger to do this. Enough spite.
To hurt him, physically, it was a new low. A low that had Norman feeling the burn mentally too.
Norman didn’t know if he felt more angry, frustrated, or sad. Of course the temper and shades of red that he saw were overtaking his being currently, but through every line of anger was a SADNESS. A sadness that Mother would actually hurt him like that. Somehow it was easier to recognize this kind of hurt rather than the mental kind of hurt she had ever put him though. The guilt trips and smothering. It was both childish and cruel, something that Norman should just shrug off because he knew these days Mother was on an emotional roller coaster; But the young man was sensitive, more sensitive than most men, and of course he was quickly taking it to heart but not wanting to let her see that.
Storming down the stairs where he had seen a sliver of her disappear down, Norman retreats to the kitchen quickly whilst shaking the hand that was beating with a swell as if it was his HEART that had gotten slammed into the drawer. “Mother---- you’re only following one immature action with another! Hiding will do nothing for either of us.” Every exhale was a temperature higher to blacking out. The sound of his nicest work shoes clacking against the wood is the only sound besides his breathing as he makes his way into the living room. Eyes scan around as the young man’s bottom lip quivers in frustration. Then it’s as if everything clicks as he takes a glance at the curtains and sees the FAINT outline of a silhouette that could belong to nobody else other than Mother.
Mother running away was something he quickly found he hated; More than hated. More like something he could not stand. Norman’s ONLY determination was to see her face again now, to look into her eyes and have his Mother. This conversation was certainly NOT over. A few stomps are taken and without another conscious thought he’s yanking the curtain open to find Mother. Of course he did. She was hiding just as he had suspected. Eyes were on fire with conflict as he stares at her.
“Did you honestly think you could hide from me forever, Mother?” This time his voice came out quieter than the way he had been shouting before. “---Is that what you want? To run away like a child? I’m not one anymore, and you certainly aren’t. I think we should be capable of having a conversation of conflict without you running off like that after doing something so foolish.”

✘ — dylan:
Dylan couldn’t help but think by the way Norman was speaking to him right now that maybe in another life – one that was less cruel – Norman would have been a good teacher of some kind. His little brother just had that soft spoken, patient sort of tone (when he wasn’t spinning out). Reassuring. Maybe the bizarre thought only flickered in and out of his mind out of relief that Norman didn’t so much as glance his way when he’d alluded to his office and therefore all the things related to it.
He didn’t know Emma’s father very well – at all, really… but Dylan knew Norman had learned taxidermy from him, that Norman used to spend a lot of time over at Artful Artifacts not spent socializing with Emma. Emma had always given the impression she was well read, too. Made sense that Norman had found a friend in her, and a mentor in her dad. It was reaching, but these were just wisps of things crossing his train of thought anyway – wasn’t often he spent time with Norman just to hang out. Felt a little strange, like there should be some pressing matter they oughtta be discussing, but… the only things worrying Dylan now weren’t anything he wanted to share.
After he was sitting on the other end of the couch, Dylan watched with mild interest as Norman reset the pieces, thinking (idly, again) of one of his first nights here; of cutting off a hospital band from Norman’s wrist, and realizing shortly thereafter he wasn’t the only one who’d come out of Sam’s rearing a little fucked up. He should’ve known better than to dismiss it like that. Times had definitely… revealed there was a lot more to Norman’s meat tenderizer incident than him just getting a little too riled up, a little too defensive.
A surprised blink and semi amused, semi impressed silence was all Dylan had to offer as Norman quoted some guy that sounded like a vampire from an old movie. His little brother had said it so surely, without thought; he’d never been able to do that unless it was actually from a movie, and one he’d seen a fair few times. Norman was smart like that. Articulate, literate. Always had been. It’d just been one of the many things Dylan used to find himself being a little envious of – nowadays he just wished his smarts could’ve saved him from whatever it was that was plaguing him now. He still had to believe, though, that Norma would help Norman do what was right for him – that one day Norman would be able to live up to all that potential and be proud of himself and happy, healthy.
“It’s a good one,” Dylan agreed, nodding and leaning forward, elbows on his knees. “All I really know is you’ve gotta take the queen –” Learned from the kid wizards fucking around in their castle school’s dungeon basement to save some shiny stone from a two faced and handsy guy. “– But uh, yeah.” He wrung his hands a little, looking from the chess pieces to his brother and returning his smile. “Let’s give it a go.”
When Norman’s mind and beingallowed himself to branch out of the daily mental flaws he struggled with (ones he was delusional to and only excused at the fault of others), the boy bloomed in enthusiasm for the things he loved. Even the littlest of things. Just like being able to teach his older brother how to play chess and the dynamic of it all. A part of Norman passionately adored being able to TEACH. To teach was to give something very special to someone; That’s what Norman saw it as. It seemed like he was always being taught things about himself every day as his sickness lingers, untreated. Also learning things about Norma, the lengths she went to to protect them.
Dangerous lengths.
Even learning things about death, dealing with the sealing of murder since they first moved here. Learning about Sheriff Romero and the things he did around White Pine Bay. Learning about the pain Mother had gone through. But to let someone ELSE learn something, it was a control factor for the teenager. It was taking control of constantly being exposed to his fears and turning the tables for once. Here, there would be nothing to find out for Norman. It was only his brother and him-- and his brother had always been able to listen to him without something bad happening. Just like when Dylan offered to take him under his wing shortly after he came here. Dylan always had a kind heart and until recently Norman didn’t allow himself to see that. Before things now, there was only spite towards his brother because of the way he was raised to think of him. The “bad son”.
“--Alright, well let’s begin with talking about how the pieces move.” Norman responds with subtle enthusiasm in his tone, eyes shifting to the chess board. “Each of the six different kinds of pieces moves differently.” Norman puts a finger on a black bishop piece that’s in the spot behind a black knight. “See, pieces can’t move through other pieces.” Norman’s finger moves to the black knight this time. “--Though, there are exceptions. The knight can jump over other pieces, unlike the rest. But that exception aside, pieces can never move onto a square with one of their own pieces. However, they can be moved to take the place of an opponent's piece which is then captured.”
In the middle of giving example and moving the black knight out on the field, Norman PAUSES his teachings for a moment. “----Isn’t it... funny, Dylan?” Norman lets a relaxed smile sit loosely on his lips as he thinks about what he’s about to say, eyebrows furrowing in thought a little as a light and joyful chuckle is let out. “That the both of us are here and it doesn’t feel like there’s something to be done. Like we have to worry about hiding a secret or... or figuring out anything. It just feels as if we can breathe.” Norman explains, keeping his stare locked on the chess board.

she KNOWS him, knows when he’s lying, but she decides to keep that to herself for now… if she can. but oh, it’s so hard to hold her tongue sometimes, to keep from taking that pretty little head of his in her hands and smashing it against a wall. she wouldn’t — norma would never hurt him ; he is all she has left in this cruel joke of a world, this pit of DESPAIR that she calls her death — but sometimes he is so DENSE, so naive, so unfeeling towards her plight. she did this for HIM ( everything she ever does is for him, all for him ) and while he goes out, basks in the warmth of the spring sun, spends lazy afternoons in cafe’s in the village ; lives his life ; she is STUCK here, cleaning up the messes he creates like the wonderful, self-sacrificing mother she is. he will never understand what she does for him, not in a million years.
“if you’re going to GO OUT for dinner, the least you can do is tell me so I don’t —” the apron around her waist is untied and torn from her in a flurry of angry hands, then thrown against the kitchen cabinets. “spend all day SLAVING over a hot stove for YOU!”
@wouldntharmafly liked this for a starter.
Mother just didn’tunderstand. It felt like they had always understood each other without spewing a single word, like two souls and minds bonded by a mental glue through all these years. But ever since the entire LIE had began and he had to start watching her with a closer eye... Something had changed in her. Mother never enjoyed being supervised. Something changed in the both of them, perhaps-- but Norman would never admit that. The young man was too naive. Life was simply circumspect nowadays and if Mother was too delusional and carefree to abide by the things they hadto live by, then Norman had NO choice but to lie to her. Madeleine was just a friend.
Norman was just going to head out the door until he was being CAUGHT in a lie. There was nothing he despised more than Mother catching him in a lie. He didn’t know whether it was the fact that he hated lying to the person he loved most, or because it was another reminder that he couldn’t keep feeding her spoonfuls of bullshit just to keep her happy. To keep her tamed. Norma Louise couldn’t be tamed, not by anyone. Since when had Norman become the one to try? It had always been them on the same side, but things were different now. He didn’t fancy it for a single moment.
Body tensing up as his mother throws her apron in rage, Norman grits his teeth a bit. Here she goes again. It’s always this. “Oh, precisely, Mother-- because you’re just such a slave around here.” Norman begins with a sour irony in his tone, green hues minimizing to only a half moon as the son NARROWS his eyes. “The life we’ve created is nothing short of what we always dreamed of, and for you to act like you disagree is appalling. So what if I am going to dinner? Why would that be so unspeakable? You still have to eat and I’m still coming home to be with you in the end of it all. So PLEASE, Mother, enlighten me-- because your attitude is starting to become questionable.”

Caleb opened his eyes slowly, carefully.
He didn’t know where he was; not at first, at least. Everything was dark, and everything hurt. He could hear someone walking, but could not tell where the sound was coming from. It felt as if he were floating through space, as if he was falling and was unable to be found.
Norman was in the midst of another blackout. Again. This one was deep like a cavern of disassociation and he’d been in it for longer than a lot of the others that the boy had undergone as of recent. So much so that he had his armor of blonde locks belonging to nothing more bona fide than a wig on his head. Norman disassociating, it had reached a new strength within him. One where his facade began to match up with the special individual that lived in his head; His mother.
Heels clicked against the creaking stairs as he made his way down into the basement to check on what had been down there for some time now. Or rather--- she made her way down. Norman’s version of Norma was much different, and that being said, “Norma” visiting Caleb was bound to be very abstract from the actual Norma visiting Caleb.
A sickened pity for what he stared at tainted the young man’s facial expression and a hand moved the honey blonde curl that fell by his eye. An arm rests on the stair railing and eyes narrow just the slightest as he stares down at the man who had seemed to be awakening slow enough. Norman stayed on the last step of the stairs. Caleb was clearly in some sort of daze from what he’d gone through recently. Poor thing. Not. “Get up, Caleb.” Norman Norma demands with a slight disgust rolling off the tongue as the words filled the silent basement of the Bates home.
Sheriff Greene: How did you know Blackwell lived in Canyon City? Norman: Oh you- uh, you mentioned it. The last time you were here. Greene: Did I? Norman: Yes. Yess-I-r-r-r-r-r-r-remember now, you were um, uh, up there on the porch and you said that you found a piece of paper with my address on it at his place in Canyon City….. [Inhales]
I have recently had a very hard family problem come up and I've been in a really bad place lately, therefore a semi hiatus kind of came about without me really meaning to. But tonight I'm finally going to do replies and let me tell you-- I've never been more excited to get into the headspace of Normy and leave real life for a little. I MISS ALL OF YOU!!!!!!
A man should have a hobby.

Victor Hugo (via wordsnquotes)
From the very minute the boy’s mother had been walking through the front door after her return from running some errands, Norman was past glowing because of the surprise he had arranged with his own two hands that awaited her in the kitchen. She had no warning until Norman was taking her purse right from her wrist to set it aside, barely able to hold out with patience until Norma did so herself. First it was a hand offered out to lead her to their destination and next it was insisting that she closes her eyes so she won’t see what he’d set up until they get there. “Don’t peak.” Norman warns playfully, simply smiling and shushing his mother as she complained in a joyful curiosity to spit out what he had to surprise her with.
The two of them finally took a few last steps (steps that were blind on her part besides the pull of Norman leading her) and the son looked at his arrangement for a moment. He was sure she could get a hint just from the aroma of the place alone. Norman had made all of Norma’s favorite foods with the help of a secret grocery shopping trip he had taken and many recipes with trials... and errors. But in the end, a warm and saccharine apple pie had been made, along with a batch of soft chocolate chip cookies and last but not least a steaming and piquant pot roast. That one was the most difficult to get down just right. Mother’s would clearly always be the best.
He’s done all of this not only because he craves to show her a spontaneous act of kindness, but also because she had been upset about some bypass related things as of lately. She always cooked for him every morning and night and it was time for him to show her what he was capable of doing; Or rather that he appreciated his mother greatly. Norman hoped perhaps a nice selection of her favorite foods would let her gain some comfort. The grip on her hand softens as he grins in pride of what he had done. The table was set perfectly. “Alright, Mother -- it’s okay for you to open your eyes now.”
