it's absurd that mike flanagan has the chance to correct the sins of the previous carrie adaptations (i.e. don't make carrie thin and conventionally attractive) and instead he's decided to throw that out the window to pursue an even less meaningful narrative than the other two by making it a story about the harms of technology. genuinely, the other film adaptations felt like fever dreams because carrie white is ostracized for seemingly no reason, simply because they didn't have the courage to cast a girl who actually looks like book carrie. and you're telling me that in 2026, with two failed attempts already in the rearview, we can't get an accurate portrayal of the novel's themes?

i think even if I was cis, i'd still at least consider taking estradiol just to experience a drastic but gradual bodily change. something about transitioning scratches an itch to transform into Something Else that doesn't feel solely rooted to gender dysphoria. waking up in the morning, day after day, noticing subtle shifts in fat distribution, face shape, ligament size, skin texture, muscle definition, it proves to me that I've always wanted to be transformed, but also that I resonate with the prospect of transforming.

there’s constantly this theme with masked characters in which the mask must be their “false self” and they are only being truly genuine when they interact using their biological face. whats interesting is that in these happy endings where the mask is removed, the “true and good” nature of their face must be reinforced by attractiveness. the audience is not made to accept something genuine but hard to swallow. instead they are rewarded for seeing the mask as false by finding a much nicer visage underneath. basically just a retelling of the ugly duckling narrative, where the claimed theme of acceptance is completely undermined by the favorable appearance the swan eventually takes on.

instead, i think it would be much more interesting if the mask is their true face. what if biology isnt enough? what if you were “blessed” with features that just never felt right, like something never clicked into place? wouldn’t it be soothing to make a mask that places that internal, real face on the outside, over the insufficient one you’ve desperately tried to like? why does your default body, the one society loves, need to be beautiful, but the mask must be ugly? what if you dont want to ever take it off?

not to rag on anyone’s monster designs, but i feel like “wrinkly naked person with no hair” is kind of beyond overplayed at this point. and predicated on the idea that wrinkles make someone unsettling. or that being bald makes someone unsettling. put some hair on that thang if you wanna make it creepy. or like, dont just make it look like regular person with slight alterations. boring doesn’t even begin to describe this design convention
