Pain aches from behind Dan Heng’s eyes, and he rubs them tiredly as they throb once again. The glowing blue light emitted from his computer makes his eyes strain and squint, but he's far too used to staying up to sort the data bank. A sharp jab pierces his forehead as a reminder of how long he’s been awake.
Dan Heng forces himself to take another sip of Himeko’s coffee and continues to click and clack at his screen. The rustle of fabric reminds him that you were staying over tonight, and he looks over his shoulder to see if he was keeping you awake.
You squint and groggily cover your eyes from the light of his computer, lifting your head slightly to meet him.
“You said you would sleep early tonight…”
Dan Heng swivels his chair to look at you while tilting his laptop downwards.
“I know, I’m sorry. I.. I was distracting myself with work,” he admits quietly, rubbing his temple.
You close your eyes and mumble, “I’m cold without you, Dannie.”
He knows that’s a lie, but smiles anyway. The heat radiating from the data servers was more than enough to keep one person warm.
“Coming, coming.” He crawls under your shared blanket and lays on his arm to watch you nuzzle into his side.
Dan Heng can’t (and doesn’t want to) fall asleep. His eyes can’t help but stare at the bouncing water underneath the floor panels as another form of distraction. The light hurts his eyes but he can’t look away. He was about to reach out for one of the books that he kept by his bedside before you spoke quietly.
“I thought you said the nightmares got better…”
He sighs.
“I thought they did…”
He trails off, too exhausted to think further. You poke his side teasingly.
“You need to take better care of yourself, Mr. Dan Heng. Especially after you fuss over my health.”
He cracks a weary smile.
“I’ll try to. For you.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll protect you from your nightmares tonight.”
You respond playfully but then get serious.
“And I’ll always be here when you wake up.”
He wraps his arms around you and breathes in the scent of your shampoo. Exhaustion takes over after days of improper rest and his eyelids close shut.

i've said this in xiulan's trivia before, but one of favourite things to do with dan heng is organize the archives together!!!! it's a time where they can have deep talks ykyk... xiulan also likes tying dan heng's hair in pigtails and braids and trying out new hairstyles on him! she thinks it looks cute, but dan heng doesn't share the same sentiment lol. they also like going on outings or walks together. xiulan really likes going on dates with dan heng and they usually end up walking around somewhere.
primrose... 😼😼😼 idk what their specific feelings about them would be, but xiulan is definitely one of cyclamen's cheerleaders. she's probably constantly giving her date ideas and advice when she needs it even though she's also pretty inexperienced... overall, xiulan thinks that they're cute together! dan heng probably wouldn't have much of an opinion on sunday and cyclamen's relationship but i imagine that he would just think "good for them". he wants them to be happy together as well though <3

Xiulan was dying.
Not literally, but in the sense that she was dying on the inside. Each lecture began to feel like torture as the days passed. She was the kind of person who looked put together and perfect, but was actually overwhelmed with work. All-nighters had become a daily occurrence for her, and she lived off of caffeine alone. At this point, life was a routine. Nothing ever changed. She woke up, attended her classes, studied, and slept. Over and over and over.
“Xiuxiu, are you listening to me?” Her friend’s voice snaps Xiulan out of her trance, and she focuses on the pinkette beside her.
March and Xiulan were walking through the garden together after a particularly long-winded and boring lecture. March had insisted on it since she knew that going to the garden helped her friend focus.
“Ah, sorry, what were you saying?” The albino asks, giving an apologetic smile.
“I was asking you if you wanted to come with me and Robin to this new cat cafe that opened,” March huffs.
“Mm, I’d love to, but I think I’m going to study in the library today,” Xiulan ponders aloud.
“I should’ve expected that,” her friend sighs, drooping slightly. “Well, message me if you change your mind.”
“Of course.”
And with that, March skipped off, humming something under her breath and leaving Xiulan alone in the garden. She watched her friend stroll away, letting her thoughts wander for a few minutes.
If only I said yes. I could be with them, living out a fun university student life. Instead I’m shutting myself in, studying. As usual.
This is the only way to keep my grades up. I can’t fail, so I have to do what I can to stay at the top of my class.

Xiulan sat at an empty table in a corner of the university library. A window hovered beside her, the sun’s rays illuminating her work with a natural light.
Alright, time to get started. This essay won’t write itself!
As the girl began scribbling words on her paper, she tried to maintain a positive attitude. She always told herself that a negative outlook on life would only make it harder for her to focus, so she pushed all pessimistic thoughts aside and engrossed herself in thinking about joyful things.
Today her thoughts mainly consisted of getting a good amount of sleep. If she worked efficiently, she would actually be able to sleep early, giving her a huge amount of motivation.
Time quickly passed as the library around Xiulan changed with every second. People came by, sitting close to her, but everyone always eventually left. A few students recognized her and smiled and waved politely to her. She always smiled back, but never said anything. Her focus would not be broken, even if a meteor fell on her.
Her essay was coming along quite nicely. For this assignment, she had chosen to write about evolving technologies in the botany field. Most people would find the topic rather boring to write about, but it was quite the opposite for Xiulan. She loved anything to do with botany and biology, so writing an essay on this topic filled her with determination.
It only took her a few hours to finish writing her essay. She had outlined her ideas and completed her research prior, so writing it was quite simple. All she had to do was edit it, which was also quite straightforward and didn’t take long to complete.
Xiulan stared at her finished essay, her cherry eyes filled with pride. She set it to the side, placing it in her binder with a small smile.
Maybe I’ll finally get some sleep today.
Let’s see... what else do I have to complete today?
The young woman stretched out her arms, reaching for a cup of coffee she had gotten earlier during a small break. She peered into the mug, realizing that it was empty. She set it down, pouting.
Well, that didn’t last for long.
She let out a yawn, covering her mouth as she did. Her fingers rubbed against her eyes, blinking rapidly.
Maybe I can rest for a few minutes... a few minutes wouldn’t hurt. I’m done with my essay, after all.
A chuckle escaped her lips as she rested her head against her folded arms, her eyes swiftly fluttering closed.
Just for a few minutes.

Dan Heng was planning on going to the university library to read for a bit. He always went there when he needed a break from his dormmates that constantly gave him a headache.
March and Caelus were two extremely annoying people to live with, the former being more of a nuisance. March was always bugging him about nonsense, and Caelus would incessantly yap about his love for trash cans to Dan Heng.
Frankly, he was always in need of a break, and the library was the perfect place to provide him with some peace and quiet.
To his surprise, he found his other roommate conked out on a table in a corner of the library. There was a bunch of books and papers spread out on the desk, and an empty cup of coffee by her head.
Fell asleep while studying, hm?
Letting out a small sigh, the young man pulled out the chair opposite of hers and sat. He pulled out his laptop, the glow of the screen reflected on his face. His finger tapped against the keys, the sound blending with the library’s tranquil atmosphere.
Every now and then, he would glance at Xiulan. She would barely move, and it made one wonder if she was still breathing. But Dan Heng could see her chest rise and fall, so he knew she was okay.
He sat at that table for quite a while. He insisted to himself that he was studying, but his gaze told a different story.
She looks... peaceful. More peaceful than she is when she’s awake.
Dan Heng was no stranger to Xiulan’s struggles. Although she managed to fool most people, he saw right through her facade. She was overwhelmed with schoolwork to the point where she forced herself to pull all-nighters almost every day. He chose not to say anything in hopes that she might’ve been able to fix the problem herself.
But she only seemed to be getting worse. That was why he decided to not disturb her nap.
Eventually, the ravenette closed his laptop with a quiet click, and stood up. His eyes didn’t leave the albino’s as he stood. He hesitated for a moment, but pulled out a small piece of candy from his sweater’s pocket and placed it in front of Xiulan’s sleeping head.
“A reward for finally getting what you’ve always wanted,” he whispered under his breath, the smallest of smiles making its way to his lips.
Dan Heng turned around and left, feeling satisfied since he knew Xiulan was going to be alright.
・・・・・
Ugh...
Where am I?
Xiulan’s head slowly lifted up, and she rubbed her eyes. Once she realized where she was, she snatched up all her papers and stuffed them into her binder.
Ah, I fell asleep for too long! It’s okay, I only had to get that essay done... good thing I completed it before I decided to take that nap...
Still, that’s valuable time lost.
She sighed, gathering her things and getting ready to leave. Her eyes landed on a piece of candy on the table. She glanced around for a few seconds before taking it. It sat in her palm, and she stared at it, wondering where it had come from.
I don’t remember getting this... who left this here?
But she shook it off, pocketing the candy and quickly rushing out of the library with her belongings in hand.
Maybe napping for longer than expected wasn’t a bad thing. She lost time, but she also gained time previously lost.
March greeted her as she made it back to her dorm, latching their arms together and talking about how fun the cat cafe was.
“Ooh, you should’ve come with us, Xiuxiu!” She squealed. “It was so much fun and the cats were all so cute!”
“Maybe next time,” the young woman replied with a smile.
Dan Heng walked into the lounge, a freshly made cup of tea in his hand. His eyes immediately met Xiulan’s, and she gave him a small wave. The young man averted his gaze, and March noticed him at that exact moment, so she dragged him over to the counter.
“Dan Heng! Don’t try to avoid us!” The pinkette teased.
“I wasn’t trying to avoid you,” Dan Heng muttered.
Xiulan let out a small laugh, choosing to watch the duo as they began to bicker.
I think that I was wrong. My university life is quite fun. And I have my friends to thank for that.
And Xiulan knew that this was only the beginning of more adventures to come.
- If she had to give one piece of advice to her younger self, it would be to keep getting up and moving forward, no matter how difficult it may be.
- For her birthday, she would prefer having a normal day, but would like to have a party.
