“ i know you did, gabriel. “ gérard comes up often. it’s hard for him not to when both of them are able to point out something he would’ve thought was hilarious or what he would’ve said about something. all of that’s easier for saori than remembering the sound of his voice, how it might rise and fall on certain words. she’ll never know again without the help of archive footage. she keeps one of her arms wrapped nice and snug around gabe’s shoulder, the free hand of the other using nimble fingers to keep her heart shaped locket open. it’s such a small picture of gérard, but the energy he leaves behind is still massive.

gabriel has had a nice view of the back amélie’s head for the last little while. her neck must be feeling the strain from how she’s had it bowed over her desk, left hand scrawling across the tablet-sized notebook in front of her. she doesn’t trust her situation to allow her to keep things on a laptop, so amélie keeps things old fashioned. her spell of intense concentration breaks when gabe’s low voice crackles in her ears. that snaps her out of it. amélie lifts her head with a painful crack of her neck that has her wincing. all of her feels stiff. not just from sitting here. she’s stiff from it all. taking beatings several time a week in the path for revenge isn’t ideal.

she spins the chair around to face him better, tucking her knees up to her chest with a shrug. “ we should. “ her agreement seems to come without hesitation.

“ but. i don’t know if i can. “

that’s a miss more often than it is a hit. she looks at him in interest, mouth curving into a half smile that she only uses when she finds something especially funny. “ we ? feeling optimistic that we’ll be able to rest for once ? “

amélie takes the hand he offers to her and stands, letting gabriel guide them both to the bed. dunno. maybe if we try hard enough.

that’s a good enough of an answer for her. gabriel flicks off the light and mel settles in behind him, pushing her face in between his shoulders. she’s not surprised she manages a yawn. her body just about feels utterly crushed under her exhaustion. she considers bringing up what it was she was researching and taking notes on but their bed functions as a place where neither of them are allowed to talk about talon going ons. they do enough of that during every waking moment.

amélie can’t help but get like this: an animal trapped in its own skin, vicious and clawing. she has one of her hands wrapped nice and snug around his throat, squeezing with the threat of claws until she relents. amélie doesn’t mind losing a fight. she can’t win all of them but still she tends to put her all into them until there’s nothing left for her to give. her breathing’s steadied enough but there’s a small catch when gabriel leans his face closer, leaving very little space between their mouths.

it winds her up again for all of a moment and she tries to exert more effort but….he’s right. she’s tired, bested this time. their marriage is a constant, even back and forth. “ do you want a medal ? “ she tries for a petulant tone and just finds it as exhausted, at least to someone trained to catch how the notes of her words bob over each other. she’s still aware of the nonexistent space between them. amélie tries to keep herself somewhat focused ; a wasted endeavor when she feels his fingers glide along her throat. she shuts her eyes.

she doesn’t need to look at his face to know that shit-eating grin is there. it makes his voice sparkle, like he’s about to laugh. “ fair enough. “

amélie doesn’t make gabriel wait. fair is fair. he was the better one this time. amélie brings her lips against his, nice and gentle. she can tell he’s relaxed. should never let your guard down around a spider. amélie moves to tug his lip in a move to be sensually playful — and she knows it works when she hears him make a low noise in his throat — before she bites down hard. it doesn’t take long for the tang of blood to make itself apparent on her lips.

huh. guess you still have some fight in you, then.
