Sucks how many people were taught that "horses put their ears back when they're mad" but then never taught the difference between "angry backwards ears," "mildly annoyed backwards ears," "pain backwards ears," "concentrated backwards ears," "sleepy backwards ears" and "just happens to be listening to something behind it."

These are all completely different expressions in completely different scenarios, and only two of them are decidedly negative.

Actually, I wanna talk about the third horse, the one putting its ears back in pain. Over the last 15 years veterinarians and animal scientists have worked out pain scales for most domestic animals by taking photos of the during routine procedures.

We know vaccines painful, and by comparing horses at rest with horses getting vaccinated, we've been able to determine how they express pain visually. By looking at horses with disorders like colic, broken bones, wounds, and so on, we can determine their facial expressions during more severe pain.

At zookeeper school we were drilled through the pain faces of the most common lab animals and livestock. Nowadays I believe this has become a routine lesson in all animal related fields, but the general public still doesn't know that this is a thing that exists.

Unicorns across the world

Whew, finally this is done! Different types of unicorns! I like different interpretations of mythological creatures, so I made a bunch of them at once. They're based on real animals, but I tried to design them a bit more otherworldly.

Ladyette now fears lightning and rain.

It used to be one of her favorite things, rain and thunder. She used to sit outside and listen, smell the dirt and grass whenever it thundered, to relish in the cool, calm, gentle weather.

However, in the Distinctly Dreaming timeline, thunder always premeditated horrific violence and pain. Lightning became a means to tell if someone powerful was angry - as well as a weapon that struck her one too many times to enjoy. Rain never meant rain, something always was afoot should the rain come around. The very last time she stood in that timeline, sword in hand, it rained when she had to kill the future version of herself that managed to go back. As the perfect vision of herself 100k years in the future bled out on the ground, evaporating and absorbing into her present-day being... a singular lightning strike in the lake behind her nearly threw her entire body into a panic.

Lightning brings pain and suffering. Thunder means war. Rain... rain will never be gentle or calm again. Even with the nights spent by her new partner's side, even when he kisses her fears away and spends her panic spells holding her. There will always be something within her that fears the rain.

Jasper was, for the most part, unaware of the time-bending nature of Ladyette's external adventures; he was observant, however, and chalked up some of the inconsistencies of her personality and demeanor to... well, something else, or multiple things, perhaps even things from her past that affected her now that he would never be privy to. He didn't need to understand—but, he was there if ever she desired a new and neutral ear to reflect upon. (Well, mostly neutral, as he was certainly curious...)

Just as his hand had begun lowering itself from his chest, heart returning to a healthy state, right back up it shot in surprise as he was apparently being asked to dance. "Oh really, Madam," he began, tone in refusal but body language saying otherwise as he moved closer to her. As though compelled, his hand went to hers in acceptance with a level of manufactured hesitance called for by someone of his social position. "I really am busy—and this is hardly the place, and we've no music..."

"Oh hush, you," she pulls him in gently, back upright but not stiff. "Certainly you could spare a small moment to dance."

She knew all this cordial shmordial behavior was classic Jasper. Still, it made her smile wide and bubble up a laugh from her throat, hands holding his and guiding his other to her lower side. The height difference certainly would make this interesting, but what's a little challenge among friends?

"Would you sing us a melody, Jasper?" the gleam in her eye is as bright as the daylight that shone through the castle windows, "give me something to lead you by. Slow and steady, or upbeat in tempo. Show me what you got!"

Perhaps he'd enjoy a bit of a challenge, too. If anyone showed up now, she'd kill them on the spot for ruining such a rare occasion as this. Jasper needed to relax, let loose! If she had to find his quiet moments to do so, then she would every time. As much as Time would allow, anyways.
