Daaaaang Lois...
Well, it's done. I'm not real happy about it, but I do understand it...
Before I say anything else, I want to make something very clear. The following is not an endorsement of Donald Trump. It's not excusing anything he's done or said. It's not even me saying "well, the better candidate won." Frankly, I didn't vote at all this election because both candidates sickened me so badly that my conscience would not allow me to vote for either of them. No, what follows is me doing what I always do: making an attempt to objectively understand what's happened, even if I don't like it. That being said...      The truth is, America did not vote Trump into office. America voted the Democrats out of office. Trumpâs behavior did not win him the election. The Democratâs behavior won him the election. This wasnât a victory for Republicans. It wasnât a victory for anyone. This was a failure for the Democrats.      President Obama got elected on a platform of change. That was his whole campaign slogan âCHANGE!â âYes we can!â etc. September 11th came early in Bushâs presidency, and the ramifications of that day dominated the rest of it. People were tired of feeling afraid and were tired of what was happening to the world. They were desperate for change. So when Obama came along, a man who was so very different from the past several presidents â different race (for the first time ever), different party, comparatively young etc.; and promised change, people got excited at their chance to be done with the disaster of the past 8 years.      Despite how little I think of Obama as president, I would be infinitely happier with another term for him than I would having Trump in the Whitehouse, but I canât help but notice parallels. People are as tired of the culture that has arisen from Democrat leadership as they were of the one that arose from Republican leadership. Theyâre tired of being immediately cast as small-minded and hateful if they didnât fall in line with liberal philosophy. Theyâre tired of being cast as racist hicks for showing any signs of patriotism. Theyâre tired of turning on their TV, seeing their leaders display a sense of analytical calm regarding ISIS videos of men being put in cages and burned alive, young girls being beaten to death and gang-raped, and women executed by their children, but then visibly shake with anger over their OWN people for using the term âMuslim extremism.â We were seeing literal atrocities committed against our own people, but they were angrier over Americans for un-politically correct phrases. Conservatives â and more than that, people who are just a little less liberal than weâve come to expect from this country â have raised concerns and opinions and instead of addressing them, theyâve been shouted down and told to be ashamed of themselves, their faith, their upbringing, their national identity, and their culture.      Now, you can say âWell, now they how âgroup Xâ has felt!â Or âwell, maybe they should feel ashamed of themselves for being racist/sexist/prejudice/whatever.â And in some cases, sure; youâre right. In others, not so much; the Democrats spent a LOT of time focusing so heavily on how they think things should be that they overlooked how things ARE, and when youâre in charge of matters of logistics, with severe, far-reaching consequences, thatâs a problem. But the fact that all these people âknew how group X feltâ should also tell you something. If âgroup Xâ didnât like being made to feel ashamed of themselves and everything theyâve been raised to be, how long did you think you could get away with making everyone else feel the same way, without them acting on it? How long did you think you could say âyour culture is bad, your faith is bad, your race (in regards to white people) is responsible for everything bad in the world) and youâre irredeemably evil and hateful if youâre uncomfortable with anything we do (and by the way, keep your damn religion to yourself, it makes us uncomfortable)â before people got sick of it and wanted a change? You canât just pigeon-hole people like that. Human beings are never that simple.      So then Trump comes along with his member berries, and for the first time in 8 years, someone close to The Whitehouse is voicing all these frustrations. He promised to focus on our country. To put us and our nation first. You can say âhe just told people what they wanted to hearâ and in a lot of ways, youâre right; but at the same time, when the party in power has failed to tell them what theyâve wanted to hear for 8 straight years, I have to believe thereâs some blame to be placed over that.      Meanwhile, the Democrats seemed absolutely bound and determined to continue with more of the same. DNC members even resigned after leaked emails made it clear that they had conspired to oust Bernie Sanders â who was also very different - in favor of Hillary, the practices, polished, quintessential politician. If they werenât willing to shake things up with a member of their own party, someone their OWN members loved, it clearly wasnât going to happen at all with them.      I donât know anyone who didnât have reasons to hate Trump. The man ran the worst campaign Iâve ever seen. I canât imagine a candidate behaving less presidential during a campaign. It should have been easy to overcome him. So for those of you who identify as Democrats and are politically minded, I invite you to ponder something. As easy as it is to simply groan and talk about âwhatâs wrong with people in this country,â if you want things to go differently next time around, perhaps you should spend at least some time turning that criticism inward and asking yourself why couldnât you beat him? How is it that you couldnât produce a candidate and a campaign that was more appealing to your countrymen than Trump? What are you doing that has made your party so unappealing to the people that a man like Trump seemed preferable to what you offer.
RE: The Darkness...
She's God's sister?
...really?
Hey, what's she doing on that motorcycle? Good grief, is that a whole GANG of sharks in there?
WOW! LOOK AT HER JUMP!
How âparticipation trophiesâ rob kids of crucial life lessons.
People at work today were talking about participation trophies. I think that mindset behind them - not necessarily just the trophies themselves, but the parenting methods they represent - are a big part of the rise in teenage suicides over the past several years.
The "you're a winner if you try" approach to raising kids sounds great on paper, but it side-steps the harsh yet CRUCIAL truth: when a child loses, they need to KNOW that they've lost. I know, that sounds brutal. But it is possibly the most important lesson a person will ever learn. You have to teach them EARLY that there are going to be times when they lose. Not "there will be times when you're not #1," not "there will be times when you don't get the biggest trophy" they need to learn "there will be times when you LOSE." When you FAIL. When you fall flat on your face. Because that's how life works. At some point, EVERYONE is going to fail, and fail hard. And they're going to fail hard.
So, you've got two choices: you can have them start learning that lesson when it's a soccer game, and the result of said failure is that they don't go on to regionals, or they can learn that lesson when they don't get a job and the result is not knowing where they're going to get the money to live. And I'll tell you right now, if you chose the latter? If their first taste of real, true failure is when everything is riding on success, and they've not developed the skills to cope? If their entire lives, the only thing they've known of failure is "don't worry about it, as long as you tried, you get a trophy" and now they're being told "you tried your damnedest, but effort alone won't get you this job?"
That's a tough pill to swallow.
As parents, people want to shield their children from pain. That's totally understandable. No one wants to see their loved ones hurt. You kiss the boo-boos when they fall down and you do everything you can to make sure they have every opportunity as they grow. That's what good parents do. But you also make them get shots and swallow bad-tasting medicine and (HOPEFULLY) eat their veggies instead of giving them Capn' Crunch for dinner. Because you know that sometimes you have to do what's best for them, even if you know it will make them unhappy. Well, teaching them how to lose - and how to HANDLE losing, how to get back UP when they fall on their face - is just another plate of veggies. Failure and loss are VITAL teaching opportunities. For the good of your kids, don't pass them up.
Yeah hes gone but there are still reapers.
But all a reaper does is take souls after death and bring them to their final destination. All of that is meaningless if there is no death!
Supernatural
This show has officially jumped the shark. First of all, you CAN'T say "oh, you killed death, but I have to do my job because people are still dying." HOW? WHY? Did you miss the point of what "death" was? HE WAS DEATH. If you killed him - THAT MEANS THERE'S NO MORE DEATH. No one should be ABLE to die. That's just common sense.
"The darkness" is the dumbest concept ever. And why does every threat ever take on the form of humans? Monsters, dragons, phoenixes, leviathans...all people. c'mon.
So hereâs a thought...
A few years or so ago, there was a viral bitch-fest on the internet about Revenge of The Nerds. The claim was that the scene in which Lewis had sex with Betty by wearing a costume and making her think he was her boyfriend was rape. Sooooo...in Once Upon a time, Zelena makes Robin Hood think sheâs his wife, and tricks him into having sex and impregnating her. :::crickets chirp::: No complaints, then? Right.
When the oracle said he was born inside the matrix when it was first built, you have to remember, she was talking about the ORIGINAL.As you just finished going over, he was born, DIED, and was prophesied to come again. The version that DIED was around when the matrix was built. Neo is his reincarnation. The rest of this is pretty solid.
The Problem With Political Correctness
You know what bothers me about political correctness? About over-sensitivity to anything having to do with race, sex, sexual preference etc.? I keep seeing people whining that âoh, political correctness? You mean 'treating people with respectâ?â
No. No I donât. What I mean is pressuring people and demanding that they hide their ignorance (and no, Iâm not using âignoranceâ as a synonym for hatred, Iâm talking about their lack of knowledge) which to me is the last thing they should be doing. The problem is that when everyone is âfollowing the rules?â Youâre not really making the world better, youâre not fighting racism or hatred, youâre doing the exact opposite. Youâre creating a shallow illusion that masks it. Racism, sexism, things of that nature? Theyâre like poo. And Political correctness is like the cheap air freshener you buy at the dollar store to cover the poo smell. But that never really works, does it? All you wind up with is poo smell with a hint of vanilla.
You want to get rid of the hate? You want to REALLY kill the racism, the sexism, etc? You have to kill political correctness. You have to get thicker skin, you have to stop crying every time someone says something that could conceivable be considered racist or sexist or whatever, and accept the fact that the #1 cause of those things is ignorance and misunderstanding, and thatâs never going to go away if people are terrified of asking questions or being honest about their personal observations of the world around us. Think about it, if every time a kid asks a question in school, his teacher calls him an idiot or a hate-monger, you think that kid is going to learn anything? Of course not! Because heâs too afraid to say anything. Well, WE are teachers. All of us. Our words, our behavior, our aggression, our acceptance, weâre teaching other people through them.
We have to be open to having dialogues â and I donât mean going on a social network getting pissed off and yelling at people who say things we disagree with. You canât just bludgeon the misconceptions or the hate out of someone. Nor do I mean talking only to people who agree with us. Sitting around patting each other on the back for being so enlightened helps no one. I mean we have to be willing to have calm, rational conversations with people whose views on things make us a bit uncomfortable. We have to be willing to just DEAL with a certain level of misunderstandings and misconceptions â ESPECIALLY the kind that do not have any intended malice behind them â and correct those misconceptions through our own example.
Iâm not saying you should go find your nearest Klansman and invite him to dinner. Itâs not your job to try to convince hate-monger to like you. All Iâm saying is we need to try to keep in mind that while ignorance and misconceptions can LEAD to hate, theyâre not forms of hate THEMSELVES. We need to differentiate between the two. When someone says something that sounds âcasually racistâ as they say, stop for a minute. Ask yourself if there was malice behind what they said. If there was hostility there. Does the fact that they bought into a stereotype really mean they HATE people belonging to that group, or do they just not understand them? If itâs the latter, may curb the knee-jerk anger, and try to enlighten them WITHOUT being hostile or insulting.
What Iâm asking you to do is to ask yourself, do you want to make things better, or do you just want to put people down for every mistake or misconception so that you can feel better about yourself and show the world how very âenlightenedâ you are?
Feminist, read this.
I just hope she also sits on handbags, shopping bags etc. taking up space on seats next to their owners.
Honestly, I have two words for anyone who takes this whole âmanspreadingâ thing seriously: EXTERNAL. GENITALS.
Seriously. You know how women with large breasts have a hard time running or going quickly down stairs, etc. etc.? Well, guess what? Having EXTREMELY sensitive organs located in between two very close together, constantly moving appendages? That has its own hare of difficulties. Ladies, if you donât get this, hereâs a little experiment. Sit down. Now, stick your hand in your pants, grab a hold of your vagina, and just squeeze the holy hell out of that thing. Comfortable? Now sit like that for 20 minutes. Welcome to manhood. Enjoy the fact that you also donât have to deal with a different pelvic structure.
Tumblr, I love you as a platform, but after 20 years on the internet, from Usenet newsgroups, to AOL, to message board forums, to social networks, Iâve never, ever, seen a community so full of whiny, victim-complex-obsessed, self-entitled people in my life. The only thing I can think of is that itâs the internet. I mean, I love the net. Itâs where I work, itâs where I play, itâs where I live. You donât spend as long in IT as I have without appreciating it. But this is the first generation who have been raised by it. When I was a kid, in order to be seen by a national audience, to get major recognition, you had to be extraordinary. You had to do something that other people couldnât do. You had to do something on a level that other people couldnât. You had to work. To bust your ass to make something of yourself. Now, anyone with a phone can record themselves doing any stupid thing at any level and put up for the whole world to see. Itâs given this generation a sense of entitlement; that everyone deserves to be treated like theyâre extraordinary, regardless of whether or not theyâve put in the work necessary to actually be extraordinary. Itâs the âeverybody gets a trophyâ mentality. Sorry to disagree with feel-good movie platitudes, but youâre not a winner just by showing up. Youâre a winner when you win. And then thereâs the oppression Olympics. Everyone chooses a team and argues about whoâs the most oppressed by straight white males. If something bad happens to you, itâs almost certainly because of straight white heteronormative patriarchy. Itâs not anything you did. Ever. Itâs not just part of life. Itâs not something that happens to everybody. Itâs a grave injustice thatâs specifically targeted at your âteam.â
âGeeky stuff and the men who love it love to make us women not love ourselves.â
Bull crap. FIRST of all: You know who love to make women not love themselves? WOMEN. MULTIPLE studies have shown that what WOMEN describe as their ideal figure is FAR skinnier than MENâs. Thatâs on YOU. Not us.
SECOND: âis it even possible to look like that?â I dunno, but Iâll let you in on a little secret: you donât have to have a ridiculous comic book figure to pull off a comic book costume. You DO have to be in good shape to look good in a Wonder Woman costume, yes; but barring very rare medical conditions, anyone with a little discipline and education can get in good enough shape to wear a costume.Â
A donât kid yourself. âGeekdom is so unfair to women because they make fun of us if we donât take care of our bodies but still walk around in a tight costumesâ is a crock. Are you really going to tell me youâve never seen pictures making fun of fat Batman?
Get it through your heads: just because someone has a problem with you and youâre a woman doesnât mean they have a problem with you BECAUSE youâre a woman. If YOU canât get past your own gender, how the heck can you expect anyone else to?
THIRD: the fact that she sees another woman - A WOMAN mind you - and automatically assumes sheâs being judged because that woman is in better shape than she is? Sums up one of the biggest problems with women like this: they project their own insecurities about things theyâre entirely capable of changing, onto others. Assuming a woman is a bitch just because she takes care of her body is EVERY bit as much an example of âbody-shamingâ as anything fat women deal with.
FOURTH: As far as âneeding to prove yourself;â I hate to be the one to tell you this; but nobody owes you their approval. If you want it, earn it. If you donât want it, then donât complain when itâs denied.
If you donât like the way you look, change it. Itâs not the job of comic book artists to make fat superheroes to make you feel better about not taking care of yourself.
Number one - if youâre not a woman, please kindly shut the hell up. We have a right to feel insecure; women have been conditioned for centuries that our biggest asset is our looks. For years, Hollywood and the media have defined what beauty is; for years, women have labored to suck off flesh and fat, carve away their noses and cheeks, and starved themselves to near-skeletal states - simply to earn whatâs been deemed their only virtue: beauty. Women werenât born hating themselves; we simply were forced to grow into that mold.Â
And what gives you, or others for that matter, the right to criticize us? If someone wishes to cosplay or dress a certain way, itâs their choice and no one elseâs. You may not like looking at it but guess what? Theyâre dressing to please themselves - to enjoy themselves. You donât owe others your approval and they donât owe you theirs; so stop expecting them to dress or change based off your preferences.
As for judging? Youâre being ridiculous. Sheâs not calling the other woman a bitch for being skinny; she realized that no matter what body type, they were going to be harassed. Demanded to âproveâ themselves, as if they were unworthy to enjoy a hobby or fandom for some reason. As if theyâre not 'supposedâ to like anything; as if girls are only supposed to like sparkly and shiny and pink and absolutely nothing else.
Girls can like whatever they want. In fact, anyone can like whatever they want. We donât need your approval or anyone elseâs, no matter how much you think we do.
And ladies? Letâs prove guys like this one wrong. Get involved in the fandoms, anyway you possibly can. Cosplay, draw, write, take photos, play games! Anything!
Because being quiet wonât work here. We have to fight. We have to make them see that despite the BS we got heaped with, weâre not the damsels in distress or helpless. Donât let anyone make you think that way; more importantly, donât let yourself think that way.
âNo one can make feel you inferior without your consent.â
- Eleanor Roosevelt.
Theyâre not with it. So please, donât give them your consent.
 >>Number one - if youâre not a woman, please kindly shut the hell up.Â
1. Let me see if Iâve got this straight. Iâm part of the group being accused, so I donât get to speak? Howâs that work?
2. Who in Godâs name came up with the rule that you canât speak on an issue unless youâre part of the affected group? What the hell kind of broken-logic strawman is that? The truth is the truth, even when spoken by a liar. Logic is logic, is when spoken by a madman. Wisdom is wisdom, even when spoken by a fool. To invalidate my words because of what sex I am? Congratulations, youâre far more sexist than anything youâre likely to encounter at your average con.
We have a right to feel insecure;
Everyone has a right to feel insecure. The problem is not insecurity. The problem is pointing the finger of blame at other people for it without valid reason.
>>For years, Hollywood and the media have defined what beauty is; for years, women have labored to suck off flesh and fat, carve away their noses and cheeks, and starved themselves to near-skeletal states - simply to earn whatâs been deemed their only virtue: beauty. Women werenât born hating themselves; we simply were forced to grow into that mold.
1. Fun fact: every independent study done on the subject, without exception has reported the same thing: womenâs idea of the ideal size of a female body is noticeably smaller than menâs. In other words, we would prefer you larger than you would prefer yourselves. Thatâs on you. And I have been told repeatedly, by more women than I can count, that no one spend more time making bitchy, shaming comments about a womanâs body than other women.
2. Comic book fans have hardly âdefined what beauty isâ for anyone except for themselves. And yet theyâre the oneâs being scolded here. But hey, theyâve got penises, so theyâre guilty by default, right?
3. Speaking of defining what is beauty for an individual, there are two types of people in this word: those who care what others think about your appearance, and those who donât. So, in regards to what people consider to be ideal beauty? In regards to whatâs portrayed as ideal? You either care or your donât. If you donât, youâve no reason to complain. If you do; if you place value in the attraction and approval of other people? Then you can put in the work to earn that approval.
Iâm sorry if this conflicts with your sense of entitlement; but no one owes it to you to find you attractive.
>>And what gives you, or others for that matter, the right to criticize us?
I could ask you the same question. Iâm critical of anyone who furthers victim culture by whining about things that donât make any sense.
>>If someone wishes to cosplay or dress a certain way, itâs their choice and no one elseâs.
Cool story. Now point out where I said anything contrary. No? Didnât think so.
>>You may not like looking at it but guess what? Theyâre dressing to please themselves - to enjoy themselves.
No theyâre not. I hear that a lot, but Iâm sorry, itâs crap. Consider this: if the only person theyâre dressing up for, they only person theyâre seeking approval from, is themselves? Then why do they only dress that way when theyâre around other people? If the only person theyâre dressing to please is themselves, they can wear it around the house and look at themselves in a mirror. Problem solved.Â
No. Theyâre putting on costumes to be seen in said costumes. To show off what theyâve put together (or in some cases bought). And anytime you submit your work and yourself to the approval of others, you donât get to demand said approval. No one owes it to you.
>>You donât owe others your approval and they donât owe you theirs; so stop expecting them to dress or change based off your preferences.
Wha? That doesnât even make sense...when did I - or anyone critical of the quality of someoneâs costume - seek that personâs approval? Theyâre certainly under no obligation to change or dress based on anyone elseâs preferences; but if they donât, they shouldnât expect anyoneâs approval, either. As weâve both now said, no one owes it to them.
>>As for judging? Youâre being ridiculous. Sheâs not calling the other woman a bitch for being skinny; she realized that no matter what body type, they were going to be harassed.
Yes, people have pointed that out to me. I misunderstood what was being portrayed in that part of the illustration illustration. My bad. That being said; this makes this whole comic even MORE absurd. Iâve been to a lot of comic conventions in my time. Theyâre full of people who have dealt with bullies and feelings of awkwardness. Anyone shouting âwhoreâ at a woman in a WW costume would, BEST CASE scenario, be run out of the building immediately, and more than likely would get their ass kicked either before or immediately after.
>>Demanded to âproveâ themselves, as if they were unworthy to enjoy a hobby or fandom for some reason.
Oh good lord, this again? Copy pasta: Â Â Â Allow me to let you in on a little secret: if you think that challenging someoneâs geek-cred is something we save for girls? Then you have no understanding of the culture. Male geeks are like elk: even among friends, we constantly crash antlers for dominance. Sure, the alpha-male syndrome may not display itself the same way it does for certain other sub-cultures; but itâs absolutely there. And make no mistake, thatâs what this comes down to â the âalpha maleâ mindset. Now you can say that you donât like it if you want, but donât delude yourself into thinking that it has anything to do with your sex. Â We challenge each otherâs cred all the time. Â Â Â
You know the difference between people like you and people like us? When we are challenged? We donât respond by crying all over the internet about ânot being let into the boys club.â We say âchallenge accepted!â And then we insult the person who challenged us â in Klingon. Or we recite the ridiculously convoluted and seemingly self-contradictory history of Hawk Man. Or we fire up Street Fighter and battle until our thumbs bleed. We donât see these challenges as insults, we see them as the opportunity to show off our passion.  Â
In short, âchallenging your geek-credâ has nothing to do with you being a girl. Stop demanding acceptance in the culture while simultaneously wringing your hands and claiming that something thatâs always been part of the culture only came along because girls started getting into it. This is the culture. By saying it shouldnât apply to you, youâre not asking for acceptance, youâre asking for special privilege by implying youâre not strong enough to handle it. I donât know what the female equivalent of âman upâ is, but you desperately need to do it.
>>Girls can like whatever they want. In fact, anyone can like whatever they want. We donât need your approval or anyone elseâs, no matter how much you think we do.
Then stop bitching when you donât get it. You spend an awful lot of time complaining about being denied something you donât need.
>>And ladies? Letâs prove guys like this one wrong. Get involved in the fandoms, anyway you possibly can. Cosplay, draw, write, take photos, play games! Anything!
How in Godâs name would that âprove me wrong?â What kind of hallucination are you experiencing where I said anything that would be âproven wrongâ by ladies participating in geek culture? That makes ZERO sense. Youâre letting your victim complex get the best of you.
>>Because being quiet wonât work here.Â
No oneâs asking you to be quiet. Just to say things that make sense.
>>We have to fight.Â
Yes, Don Quixote. Show those windmills whoâs boss!
>>We have to make them see that despite the BS we got heaped with, weâre not the damsels in distress or helpless.
uh-huh. You know what would go a long way to convincing people youâre not helpless damsels in distress? NOT CONSTANTLY WHINING ABOUT HOW MUCH DISTRESS YOUâRE IN. Ceaselessly crying about the bad men who didnât think you were pretty when you were playing dress-up does not exactly scream tough.
Finished listening to his discography. So here's my playlist of his The Best of Miracle of Sound.
Bigtime fan of Branson. You can just tell the dude earned his geek stripes. This album is just beyond awesome.
Batman should never, EVER be a musical. But if it was? This would be the best part...
OMG, it never even occured to me to check, but SPOTIFY HAS HIS HOLE CATALOG! Best. Friday. Ever.
I'm watching Once Upon a Time
âWhat. The. Heck. Ursela is a slender black woman with normal legs and tentacles coming out of her dress. And...freaking Cruela Devil? SERIOUSLY? Holy crap. Ladies and gentlemen, I believe it's official: the shark has been jumped. Big time.â
