PALE HANDS , SLIGHTLY TINTED BLUE , RAISE IN DFENSE . you mean no harm , you simply want to have a look , to help the other if possible . you take a step forward , two , willing your voice to be as calm and soothing as possible . slowly , you motion towards the side of ralph’s face , where the skin had melted off .
❛ may i take a look ? i may be able to help you . ❜
He reckons the android’s sent as yet another peace offering from the humans, but he’s missing a vital processor to check his person. As far as his remaining eye reliably informs him: since when did Android nurses come in suits?
“Maybe,” the scarred android echoes, angling his head to one side, though his one functional eye doesn’t leave his face. in the pale afternoon sun, the thirium glistens on Ralph’s skin, and the wound marring his cheek seems to be a lot more deeper than it would normally let on to be.
But there’s only one thought lingering on his mind: If the nurse’s idea of help meant a trip down to the nearest CyberLife store, Ralph’s going to bolt.
HE’S SO SCARED IT FEELS LIKE HE’S SHUTTING DOWN , he’s been running for who knows how long , throwing his uniform aside and grabbing a coat , a hat , something to keep his scarlet LED from being on show . rupert is panicking , as he crashes into the seemingly abandoned greenhouse , hands over both ears . he crouches low , huffing air that doesn’t exist , system glitching in a frenzy - i’m scared . i’m scared . it wasn’t me . i’m scared . he doesn’t want to be alone , perhaps it’s just his luck that he isn’t . @wrath600 .
Ralph’s so sure that it’s one of those crows that crashed into the greenhouse, and creeps out from behind one shelf to investigate. There’s shards everywhere but no bird, no blood. The glass trail ends short, and there’s something quivering on the end. By the combination of the one processor that stopped working long ago and his thirium-filled eye, Ralph makes his deduction: a black cat. So Ralph crouches too, kicking glass shards aside, and pets the dark thing he assumes is its back. “Don’t be scared.” Ralph says evenly, his vision fizzling in front of him. “You’re alright...”

slowly , the world was melting , running for the spring . a new year , unlike any before it . the streets were somewhat hushed , finding how to function after CIVIL BATTLE . the celebrations were far from over — but how to live now ? ( out from under the chaos && the blanket of peace , the once beloved the world forgot ROSE UP ! cast among the thousands unfettered . ) she had been in the throws of uncertainty when she met a strange angel , whose face was all undone at the seams and who twitched and muttered — but had been a sort of friend .
chloe always knocked . perhaps it was old habits in code — perhaps it was hushed fear of startling the poor android . ❝ ralph ? i’m back ! ❞ shuffling into their corner of detroit , door hinges shuddering from the rust , arms wrapped around a jagged mass of debris ❝ i found some firewood , for when it gets dark . ❞ from the lap of luxury to a shroud of bones … and she did not mind . she wasn’t alone . ❝ — ralph ? ❞
Even when tucked away in the darkest hollows of the house, blade held like a cross in his hands, it doesn’t ward away sounds of evil. It’s children screaming, cars skidding and tires squealing against the gravel, and there’s almost nothing he can do to escape it all, so the only thing to do is to drop to the ground, curling up in the shell of his former self.
The knock on the door drags him out of his thoughts, so he sheathes his knife and springs towards the window. The cacophony roaring in his head stills when he glimpses ash-blonde hair, and it’s all it takes for him to crack the door open, tugging her in. Chloe. The roar of thirium in his head stills momentarily, and he slides a glance at the firewood in her hands. He takes the weight from her, dumps it by the dusty fireplace, and leads her to sit on a piece of tarp-covered furniture.
He smiles, his lips twitching at one side, but there’s no light in his eyes. It’s Ralph playing Happy Families, even at this time, even when it’s just the two of them with nobody to spectate. “You must be hungry from all that activity,” he murmurs, voice nurturing. The way he would when tending to the flowers in that one garden he worked in. An obvious disconnect. “Ralph will fix you something to eat.” Though he’s already halfway towards the dingy kitchen, he slows his feet. Dares himself the tiniest look over his shoulder. “Please don’t leave.”
I’ve been sick lately so my replies will be slow. In the meantime, catch me on Discord if you’d like to chat!

Tending to these pretty, brightly-coloured flowers is almost… fun. It’s definitely new, and something -a fleeting, faint spark of electricity- tickles at his temple as he processes this experience and commits every motion and patient word of advice to memory. The touch to his hand is a surprise and he immediately stills at it, reluctantly letting the other android guide his hand over to a petunia and noting how delicate the fuchsia petals feel under his smooth fingertips. They feel… velvety. Soft.
“Isn’t casual good? Casual means relaxed,” points out Hunter with a small frown creasing between his brows. Well, best to leave it up to the expert. Maybe he should mimic that sombre, earnest look of complete concentration that he saw on the WR600′s face before he came along and interrupted his work.
Before he could switch on his serious face and ask his fellow android to judge said face, he’s caught off guard by a statement that almost sounds like an accusation to his audio processors. “Yes, I am a CA300. Did you just interface with me for that information?” he asks with a little waggle of his fingers, tone on the brink of playful. “Sneaky.”
Teasing aside, the questions make him pause and reconsider a matter that never crossed his mind until this very instant. “… Production has slowed down since a few months ago. We’ve been officially discontinued just last week,” he eventually explains, mustering a smile and looking back down at the shrub beneath him. “We weren’t really in high demand anyway, so there’s no point in manufacturing products that are on the way to being obsolete-–”
He breaks off into a sharp silence and glances down when he feels a blade of the shears nick into his finger, seeing a flash of blue seep out from the cut. “Oh.” He manages a sheepish laugh. “We’re lucky that I’m not a WR600 like you. I’d be the clumsiest gardener.”
“Casual… I- can’t…“ Ralph says, stumbling over his words, almost as though he’s saying some sort of tongue twister. He most certainly didn’t mean casual as in casual casual, but the way to grip the pruning shears wasn’t supposed to look distanced. Furthermore, one simply couldn’t get a good grip of the shears if they held it with two hands. But then again, not-being-casual is a state of being the WR600’s used to.
Ralph freezes at the realisation, and knows there’s nothing more he can say to protect himself. He fights the urge to cross his arms- defensive isn’t a good look on him, never was, and instead offers a smile with clenched teeth behind it. “Force of habit,” Ralph says, which isn’t exactly it- then he admits, for no reason at all whatsoever. “I just wanted to know.”
It sets Ralph wondering what it would be like to live on borrowed time, knowing that any day could be his last. He’s briefly reminded of the period of time where he’d been sent to a hospice care center to care for their tiny garden, and something falters: the SYSTEM INSTABILITY alert that hovers within his periphery. To be in that position is rather…. Disconcerting, Ralph thinks. It would be strange to wake up to a world that one day decided it didn’t want him anymore.
They both look down at the android’s wound in unison. “I think that’s enough for now.” Ralph sets down his spray bottle, gently eases the shears from Hunter’s fingers and sticks them into his back pockets. He makes a cursory glance at the surroundings around him, at the filming crew milling around the fountain, the women applying copious amounts of foundation to each other’s faces, and then back at the injury he has on hand. The gardener doesn’t have a plaster on him because, like what Hunter said, he wasn’t a clumsy one.
So Ralph does what he thinks is for the best- grabs hold of Hunter’s hand and- shoves the fingers into his own mouth. It’s a rush of detected thirium- his own included, that overwhelms him, but he couldn’t possibly let the other android bleed out.
“It’ll heal in a few minutes,” Ralph says, voice indistinct around the fingers, scrunching his face a little. He loosens the grip around Hunter’s arm and pulls away when he’s done. The voice that he speaks in is comically deadpan— maybe it’s the mix of thirium that caused it. Ralph doesn’t know. “Would you much rather we worked with something else, or do you need to get back to your crew?”
@iimposter
This android stares so… intensely, that Hunter briefly wonders if there is something on his face. He blinks and stares back at him blankly, waiting for the answer and weighing up the probabilities of being turned down… and, just as the odds had predicted, it seems like this WR600 is willing to show him how to trim that impossibly bright shrub of flowers.
( Petunioideae, Hunter’s online search recognises. Or more comfortably known as petunias. )
Excellent!
“Thank you,” he immediately replies, smile still intact - as if he ever expected the WR600 to say no. Humans’ entertainment have always come first in lives like theirs, and to prioritise their comfort, their pleasure — everything that made their lives that much easier and brighter, it was all ingrained into the very coding of their beings. Like how there is absolutely nothing outside of the universe’s perimeters, there is nothing outside of his coding to entertain.
Nothing but the occasional fleeting, starved wishes.
The shears feel surprisingly heavy and awkward in his hands, and he gives the blades an experimental snick at thin air. “Snip snip,” he echoes, tone more uncertain and not as nonchalant as the WR600′s. His fingers tighten their grasp around the handles and, after stooping lower, he warily snips at the petunia bush — perhaps cutting off a more sizeable chunk than he should have. Damn it. Something tickles at his right temple, like a muted spark underneath the synthetic skin. “Did I take off too much? Did I do that right?” he asks hopefully, pausing to glance over at the other android. “It’s not as easy as you make it look, WR600.”
Ralph’s expression is neutral as he watches the other android working away at the bushes, hands held behind his back. His LED flashes a red briefly when Hunter cuts off more than he should have, but he’s more or less on the right track, so Ralph doesn’t say anything. Just lets more leaves fall to their feet.
In response to Hunter’s statement about how it’s harder than it looks, Ralph doesn’t answer. His eyes are still fixated on the other android’s hands- surprisingly delicate and smooth- and Ralph’s confused. They don’t seem to quite match up with the masculine exterior his new acquaintance exuded.
“You’re doing fine,” the gardener informs him, but his LED’s yellow. Ralph reaches out to pull Hunter’s hand — they feel exactly the way they look, really, really? — away from one handle, guiding it with his own to cup one of the bright flowers. “You’re much too casual. I think you’ll look more focused this way, like you’re paying attention to the work you’re doing.”
The WR600 android lets his hand linger for a little while longer- enough for him to learn a little more about him. When he pulls it away, there are questions at the tip of his tongue. “You’re a model CA300,” Ralph says, more of a question than a statement. There’s a hint of curiosity in Ralph’s voice, but Ralph doesn’t let on, and keeps his expression carefully intact. “I’ve not seen any androids of your model before, but I’ve heard of their release some time ago. Were they discontinued at some point?” Do they all look the way you do?
Ralph withdraws a spray bottle from his belt and generously sprays the bush in front of him until they’re glistening in the sun. Maybe he should have let Hunter work with something simpler. He didn’t want to take up too much of the other android’s time, knowing that they both had their own set of objectives to get back to.
