I know I’m screaming into the void but the last three weeks have been such a masterclass in how white women will always choice solidarity with white supremacy over solidarity with their fellow women.
Kate is a prime example of white mediocrity and femininity in the service of white supremacy. I’ve talked before about why she is popular—-she is the ideal white woman: mute and pretty. She only takes on the most genteel of causes and never rocks the boat. She isn’t threatening in ways that trouble patriarchy. Her fans love her for her beauty and slimness but all those are things that acceptable and expected for women to be and others to envy.
Because she is this ideal, she is protected and insulated. She experienced the ugliness of misogyny (and classism) but once there was a target who incorporated more of a existential threat in Meghan, she became a perfectly crafted weapon. Something she has allowed herself to be gladly because she now has another body in the way of the arrows. But let’s be clear, Kate has always been protected. When Mantel made her incisive comments about how Kate allows herself to be used by the institution (which was much more a commentary on the institution and culture than Kate), no less than the PM himself spoke out. When Tatler ran a snooty but per the course puff piece gone sideways, KP enlisted all manner to get them to change their article. When she’s been accused on things that make lies of her main claim to power, her looks, she had her flunkies brief furiously to combat. When Meghan wanted the crying story refuted, the excuse given was that it was beneath Kate to be dragged into such matters.
All the while, sinisterly, Kate apes Meghan gathering kudos for the same things that Meghan was roundly abused for. This is intentional. It’s disgusting, and it needs to be called out. White women throw Black women to the wolves and then step over our bloodied bodies.
If Clarkson wrote what he did about Meghan about Kate? Oof he would have been summarily fired and the article taken down. Yet with Meghan it’s just one more in a long line of violent and increasingly more deranged commentary. Meghan is not human. Her body has been the field that all the cultural and political anxieties of the UK are being fought on.
Of course, all of this is reflected in the fandom too. White women in this fandom, even those who you would think would be values aligned with Meghan, who say they support or work in mental health, who ostensibly have “right on politics” refuse to see the depths of depravity the Royal Family and the media is subjecting Meghan too. They may “yasss Queen Beyonce” but Beyonce is an abstract. She isn’t a threat to their fairy tales and is thus an acceptable Black Women’s to use to show how “on” their politics are. It’s not them and their deep seeded racism!! It’s that dirty Meghan!! See! We like Black folks!! Just not those who dare to interrupt our fantasies—or worse, reject them. Meanwhile, they abuse, mock, and attack the Black women in the fandom who point this out. Curious how somehow nearly all the Black Women royal watchers are just paranoid idiots apparently.
White women have always been the tastemakers of white supremacy and while I am grateful that many are speaking out, the overall deafening silence from many, including the so-called gender champions in the family speaks for itself
All of this 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
