Neil picks up the habit of kissing the top of Andrew’s head after doing it absentmindedly one day. Andrew eventually grows used to it, though he puts a remarkable amount of effort into pretending he hasn’t. then, one day, as Neil leans in, Andrew unconsciously tilts his head ever so slightly, offering the crown of it for the kiss before he even realizes what he’s done. the moment he catches himself, he tries to disguise the movement as casually as possible, but Neil notices immediately. a barely concealed smirk tugs at his lips as he gently presses a kiss to the top of Andrew’s head anyway.

“There was a rumor you might transfer to Edgar Allan,” Noah stated again, pretending to check their notepad. “Could you comment further on that?”
“It was mentioned while I was there,” Neil said, “but it’ll never happen. I’ll never get where I need to be if I play with the Ravens.”
“Are you referring to your interview with Kathy Ferdinand where you said, quote, ‘Maintaining a top position is far easier than starting over from the gutters,’ end quote?” Noah asked.
Neil nodded. “Everyone loves to say that iron sharpens iron, but clashing metal causes sparks. Kevin is the whetstone the Foxes needed this year to hone their skills, and I want to be here to see it happen. We promised the Ravens a rematch this spring, so I’ll cheer them all the way to the finals. If Riko didn’t think we could meet them there, he wouldn’t have marked me or flown halfway across the country to watch us play tonight. He knows we have a chance. He just hasn’t figured out yet that we’re going to win the next time we meet. Keep an eye on us, won’t you? It’s going to be an exciting year.” Noah gave him a brief smile that bordered on devious.
“Good night,” he said when they started to ask him questions.

Andrew said nothing for a while, then, “You’re more a raccoon than a fox.”
Neil stared. “What?”
“A raccoon,” Andrew said, and mimed holding a ball in front of his face. “Exy is the shiny object of your sad little world. In Milport, you knew you were being hunted, and you knew the hounds were closing in, but you didn’t let go to save yourself. You once told me you don’t understand why a person would actively try to die, but here you are.”
“I’m not trying to die,” Neil said. “This is how I stay alive. When I’m playing, I feel like I have control over something. I feel like I have the power to change things. I feel more real out there than I do anywhere else. The court doesn’t care what my name is or where I’m from or where I’ll be tomorrow. It lets me exist as I am.”
“It is a court,” Andrew said. “It does not ‘let’ you do anything.”
“You know what I mean.”
“I don’t—”
“Andrew—”
“Let me finish,” Andrew said whilst sitting up, but Neil didn’t move from his spot, leaving only a few inches between the two. “The court does not let you do anything. You are in control, Neil. It was your choice and control to be on the court,” Andrew explained with hard eyes, “do not let a place discount your person.”

Characterizations that make the most sense to me would be:
Bee as Teacher (Izumi Curtis)
Katelyn as Winry (I know that messes up the Edward/Winry relationship, but WORK WITH ME HERE)
Abby as Pinako
Jean as Scar
Seth as Greed
The hardest characterizations would be Neil and Kevin. Off the bat, my instinct is for Neil to be Ling Yao and Kevin to be Roy Mustang. But I am not 100% sure with either. I could also see Kevin as a genderbent Winry. Not sure how Ling Yao’s characters beats fit with Neil.
Possible side characterizations:
Matt as Maes Hughes
Dan as Olivier Armstrong
David as Alex Armstrong (could be like a father & daughter troupe rather than brother & sister for the Armstrong family)

Neil’s gaze drifted to Andrew’s mouth before he could stop himself. To the lips that cured any disease that lingered in Neil’s broken body.
Whereas they had shared brief and chaste kisses, they hadn’t allowed themselves to become consumed in one another, not since before Evermore.
Months ago, before California, before Riko, before the Nest, kissing Andrew had been easy—natural. Something Neil never had to think about. It was the reassurance that led to the passion they shared during his heat. Now they stood together in the same room, closer than anyone else had ever been allowed to stand, and still there were moments when Neil felt like they were relearning each other from scratch.
