on watching a parent age
i saw somebody say “what if you’re gone and i haven’t become anything yet” and basically that broke me on a random thursday evening
I want you. I want your body, I want your soul, I want the horrors in your mind. I want the blood in your veins, the air in your lungs, the pain in your heart, the words stuck in your throat. I want to consume you entirely. I want your blood coating my tongue, your flesh beneath my teeth, your bones in my hands. I want to lick your tears and swallow your screams and cherish the salt of your flesh and the tang of your gore. I want to be the reason you laugh and the reason you cry and the reason you scream. I want to be your love and your hatred and everything in between. I want to be your nothing and I want to be your everything. I want to be your devotion and your damnation. I want to be the reason you wake up in the morning and the reason you hope that you never do. I want to be your end and call it love.
Writing a "Toxic" Character
Toxic Behavior - any kind of behavior that results in unpleasantness for those around you.
This can range from accidentally telling a joke that hurts someone’s feelings to alienating close friends and family through consistently negative and cruel behavior.
In other words, toxic behavior is whatever someone does to bring negativity upon themselves and others.
Everyone can be difficult on occasion, but you want to avoid allowing occasional, accidental toxic behaviors to become a long-term feature of your personality.
It’s one thing to make a selfish decision and meaningfully apologize afterward, but it’s another when it becomes a defining trait.
Even the most toxic people can improve their behavior patterns, so long as they make an earnest effort to understand themselves and become more compassionate.
Even though it might take a lot of self-compassion, patience from friends and family, and a resolute commitment to becoming kinder, it’s well worth it for everyone in the long run.
Prominent Toxic Behavior Traits
Toxicity manifests in numerous ways. If you’re worried you might be consistently exhibiting toxic traits, ask yourself if someone would describe you as having any one of these 5 qualities:
Critical: When people behave in a toxic way, they often blame others for all their problems. Rather than accepting any responsibility for their unhappiness or aggression, they convince themselves they behave this way solely because of the kind of people around them. Ask yourself if you’re quicker to criticize others than to self-reflect.
Manipulative: Controlling behavior, gaslighting, and other forms of manipulation are some of the key signs of a toxic person. Perhaps you try to passive-aggressively get coworkers to do your job for you or try to make family members feel guilty so they’ll do you favors. If you manipulate other people, knowingly or unknowingly, you’re exhibiting a key toxic trait.
Narcissistic: Certain toxic people only look out for themselves. As narcissists, they view their own lives as above anyone else’s. While everyone can veer into self-interest from time to time, this sort of constant self-involvement is a sure sign of toxicity. Think about the last time you put someone else’s needs above your own—if you have a hard time remembering when that was, it might be time for some further self-evaluation and improvement.
Negativity: Toxic people are often negative people. They feel the need to nitpick and criticize the minutiae of their lives, berating friend and foe alike for making things more difficult than they need to be. No one can feel happy all the time, and negativity can balance out positivity on occasion—but if you constantly dwell on things that make you sad or angry, you could be embodying toxic behavior.
Unapologetic: When toxic people lash out at their loved ones, they’re unlikely to ever apologize or see what they’ve done as wrong. This might be because their self-worth is bound up in thinking they must be right at all times and at all costs. Ask yourself whether you ever feel comfortable being wrong. If the answer is no, this might be a toxic trait worth improving.

Ref Recs for Whump Writers
Violence: A Writer’s Guide: This is not about writing technique. It is an introduction to the world of violence. To the parts that people don’t understand. The parts that books and movies get wrong. Not just the mechanics, but how people who live in a violent world think and feel about what they do and what they see done.
Hurting Your Characters: HURTING YOUR CHARACTERS discusses the immediate effect of trauma on the body, its physiologic response, including the types of nerve fibers and the sensations they convey, and how injuries feel to the character. This book also presents a simplified overview of the expected recovery times for the injuries discussed in young, otherwise healthy individuals.
Body Trauma: A writer’s guide to wounds and injuries. Body Trauma explains what happens to body organs and bones maimed by accident or intent and the small window of opportunity for emergency treatment. Research what happens in a hospital operating room and the personnel who initiate treatment. Use these facts to bring added realism to your stories and novels.
10 B.S. Medical Tropes that Need to Die TODAY…and What to Do Instead: Written by a paramedic and writer with a decade of experience, 10 BS Medical Tropes covers exactly that: clichéd and inaccurate tropes that not only ruin books, they have the potential to hurt real people in the real world.
Maim Your Characters: How Injuries Work in Fiction: Increase Realism. Raise the Stakes. Tell Better Stories. Maim Your Characters is the definitive guide to using wounds and injuries to their greatest effect in your story. Learn not only the six critical parts of an injury plot, but more importantly, how to make sure that the injury you’re inflicting matters.
Blood on the Page: This handy resource is a must-have guide for writers whose characters live on the edge of danger. If you like easy-to-follow tools, expert opinions from someone with firsthand knowledge, and you don’t mind a bit of fictional bodily harm, then you’ll love Samantha Keel’s invaluable handbook
So so honored to get THREE separate mentions in this list! (I haven’t read the first few, but the first one sounds fascinating!)
To differentiate the last 3, which are mine:
10 BS Tropes: this is how not to piss off medical folks in storytelling. It is short, and it was free the last I checked.
Maim Your Characters: this is a guide to injury as a plot structure tool. As in, how and when do you make the most out of a good character thrashing, from a plot perspective?
Blood on the Page is the book that tells you how long a specific injury might take to heal, what the character would go through, and details about their treatment.
Also, if cash is an issue, most of Blood on the Page and Maim Your Characters is available in my blog archives if you can navigate the hellsite. (The #masterposts tag is your best bet). And 10 BS Tropes was free the last I checked!
(Since I’ve had people ask: I priced the books so that, last I checked, I earn equivalent royalties whether you buy paperbacks or digital.)
xoxo, Aunt Scripty
P.S.: While I no longer answer asks about specific scenarios or injuries, I’m happy to answer questions about the books themselves via DM or ask box. Including the “hey I want this but REALLY can’t afford it could you PDF me?” ones.

How to write a smut scene
requested by: @my-shields-are-down (a long time ago, sorry I only got to it now)
What goes into the writing of a sex scene?
details to incorporate:
the initiation: e.g. playful banter, small hints, the first touches
the sensations in their stomach, their chest, and their skin
the way their breathing changes during the intimacy
the feeling of the other's hands, mouth, and skin
the way the other's scent and sounds affect them
the moment they realise they've reached the point of no return
a basic insight into their positions (mention when it changes but you can still keep it a minor part in the text)
possible dialogue (there can be as little or as much dialogue as you want):
... during the initiation:
"Do you know what it does to me when you are wearing this?"
"I have a little idea for us two."
"You know, you're driving me insane, do you?"
"I know what you're up to. I can see it in your eyes."
"Right now?"
"Right here?"
"Do you really want to?"
"I like that."
"You know I can resist you."
"I could never say no."
"Will you indulge me?"
... during the act:
"That's all could think about the whole day."
"That feels good!"
"Yes, like that!"
"Right there!"
"Hmm!"
"Yesss!"
*incoherent mumbling and moaning*
"Do you like that?"
"You make me feel so good."
"Don't stop!"
*calling the other's name repeatedly*
"You're doing so good."
"Oh, God!"
"Dear Lord!"
... after the act:
"Did you like it?"
"That was very nice."
"Come here!"
"You're so soft and cuddly."
*terms of endearment*
"That was amazing!"
"How are you doing?"
"Is that alright for you?"
"You were phenomenal!"
"I didn't know you could do that!"
"Let me take care of you."
→ include humour and jokes that fit your characters to make the scene more natural and familiar

the different stages: (a quick overview)
excitement/arousal: starts with stimulation (which can be physical, emotional, or mental)
plateau: arousal reaches a plateau, breathing quickens and gets uneven, abdomen and thighs tighten
orgasm: release of all the tension
resolution: the body goes into a mode of relaxation, time for aftercare
(you don't have to include all of them, you can include and exclude them the way you're comfortable and the way it fits the scene and the plot. sometimes not all stages are reached and even if they are, you don't have to describe them in great detail)
focus on:
similar to my advice on how to write a kiss scene, focus on the sensations. what does it do to the person? how are they feeling and how are they reacting? this kind of scene can get a bit cold and distant when the description gets too 'technical' (and most of the time that's not what we want; however, it can be used deliberately as a device)
i know a lot of people are intimidated by describing and keeping track of the positions in a smut scene. while it shouldn't be too confusing for the reader, my personal advice is to not make the positions the primary role in this scene. if you're writing from the character's POV, describe what your character can keep track of (which - in a hazy state - can be quite little). stick with what the character can feel and only complement it with what could be crucial for the reader's understanding (read it to yourself and look if you can imagine their positions).
small details that the characters only notice in such intimate situations. details about the other's body: lines, fine hairs, scars. show how they fuel their adoration for the other. also minute details in the way their expressions and breathing change. let us see it through the other's eyes.
don't forget the aftercare. it makes not only your character but also your readers feel safer and more comforted. aftercare can look different from couple to couple, scene to scene. in general, it's time for relaxation and regeneration. you can incorporate softness, taking care of each other, praising, words of love and affirmation.
Smut scenes can vary greatly, so this isn't a post that provides for all possible scenarios. It's an attempt to give a first overview.
I hope this helps <3
The Big Book of Writing Sex; A Tactless Resource!
Writing sex scenes. If you read those three words and you’re interested I don’t have to say much more huh?
A disclaimer if you will that this is just covers the two physical genders we see the most, with a bit about managing with non/neutral genders, xeno sex, jellies, hermaphrodites, and gender shifters, and stuff. If anyone has a problem with any gender doing anything, then they can skip that part. If you have any issues with any of the terminology I use, you can go elsewhere. I’m not here to be PC or make you feel better about what you’re reading or take care of your issues, I’m just here to drop information for people who might need it and I’m not nice about it. Trigger Warnings I guess for general sexuality, but I keep the really nasty harder triggers out of it. Oh and it’s REALLY LONG AND DETAILED (It’s 13,400 words or so if you’re asking.)
So: suck it up, put on your big girl panties, and deal with topics you might find uncomfortable or badly phrased as maturely as possible. Get ready to giggle like 13-year-olds at the word nipple. We’re going into the five-alarm-flame-bait-NSFW-headache known as sex! (No seriously, this is NSFW. 18+ only material.)
