Beyond this, consider how these professions might vary depending on who the customers are - nobles, or lower class. Are they good at their job or just scraping by? Do they work with lots of other people or on their own? City or village?
For younger characters:
Apprentice to any of the above
Messenger/runner
Page/squire
Pickpocket
Shop assistant
Student

Also consider:
Candlemaker Ferryman Factor (looks after business for an employer in another city) Tiler Cutler Beekeeper Apothecary Interpreter Furrier Moneylender/Banker Winemaker Tinker (small trader who repairs stuff) Nightsoil collector Customs officer Also a bonus for animal related professions: Fowler (supplies game birds for eating) Warrener (catches rabbits on your land for you to eat) Ostler (looks after your horses) Falconer (looks after your falcons) Cocker (looks after your fighting cocks)
I am a morning writer; I am writing at eight-thirty in longhand and I keep at it until twelve-thirty, when I go for a swim. Then I come back, have lunch, and read in the afternoon until I take my walk for the next day’s writing. I must write the book out in my head now, before I sit down.

updates on my love life: claimed another fictional character as my boyfriend
“I don’t know where people got the idea that characters in books are supposed to be likable. Books are not in the business of creating merely likable characters with whom you can have some simple identification. Books are in the business of creating great stories that make your brain go all like ahhbdgbdmerhbergurhbudgerbudbaaah.”

Give up the notion that you must be sure of what you are doing. Instead, surrender to what is real within you, for that alone is sure.

How To Actually Sit Down And Write
A guide for people with no discipline, difficulties motivating themselves and a tendency to procrastinate, but with ambitious writing projects.

David Levithan-Rachel Cohn Book Collaborations
If you guys haven’t heard or read any of these books yet, I suggest you go ahead and pick one. David Levithan and Rachel Cohn has this kind-of tradition where they pass a story back forth, each one writing a character’s POV, to finally end up with a good book.
These are light romance contemporaries that I consider fast reads but with such unique plot lines and hilarious characters. Personally, I found Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist the best of the three. Here are some of the best quotes from each of the books:
Naomi and Ely’s No Kiss List
“Just because a person is beautiful doesn’t mean there’s no soul beneath. Doesn’t mean that person hasn’t suffered like everyone else, doesn’t mean they don’t hope to still be a good human being in an awful world.”
Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares
“I always hoped that after the prince found Cinderella and they rode away in their magnificent carriage, after a few miles she’d turn to him and say, ‘Could you drop me off down the road please? Now that I’ve finally escaped my life of horrific abuse, I’d like to see something of the world, you know? I’ll catch back up with you later, Prince, once I’ve found my own way.’”
Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist
“Fuck me. Fuck me for always getting into situations like this. Fuck me for caring. Fuck me for not knowing the words that would’ve made her stay. Fuck me for not knowing what I want. Fuck me for wavering. Fuck me for not kissing her back the right way. Fuck me for getting my hopes up. Fuck me for not having more realistic hopes. Fuck me for giving her my fucking jacket. Fuck.”
"It’s kind of fun to do the impossible." - Walt Disney
Writing a novel is a tiny candle in a dark, swirling world. It brings light and warmth and hope to the lucky few who, against insufferable odds and despite a juggernaut of irritations, find themselves in the right place to hold it.
