Looking up from your sketchbook, you paused, struck by the bizarreness of your situation once more. Ever since you had moved here, you had been coming to this lovely little spot in the forest, having found it thanks to a rabbit of all creatures. It was a beautiful little spot, and seemed to be something of a natural magnet for the creatures of the forest, making it the perfect place for you to practice your sketches.
At first, you had believed it simply to be a coincidence that the animals often tended to be the ones you were hoping to draw that day, but gradually, all the strange little “coincidences” started to pile up, until eventually, there was no way to deny the strangeness of it at all.
Each and every time that you settled down to watch the area, sketchbook in hand, an animal would always almost instantly show itself, often lingering in the same area for far longer than seemed normal, especially when it kept happening, again and again. Sometimes, they wouldn’t even leave the area until you had finished your drawing, or were done for the day.
By this point you’re pretty sure that whatever is causing this, has given up all illusions of subtlety, especially if the scene before you is anything to go by. It’s not exactly everyday that you see predator and prey cuddled up in such a way. It was almost ridiculous how obvious and over the top it was to be perfectly honest.
The only real question was who, how, and why, they were doing it.
Bailey never thought for a second that she was the one causing this.
She never thought that she broadcasted a signal to everyone around her that said ‘I’m a friend.’
She never thought that the animals sensed this and came closer to her, whether hoping she would protect them or thinking that they needed to protect her.
She never thought they learned over time to hold still for her sketches because they sensed the rush of happiness when a drawing came out well and feeded off of it.
She never thought that the fox curled around the rabbit with no intentions of eating did so because it knew such a thing would upset her and would never dare be the cause of that.
She never thought the rabbit was fearless because it knew she would never let something happen to it.
She never thought that the supernatural creatures hiding in the shadows protected her during her time in the woods.
As she looked into the trees, though, she thought she saw four eyes looking back at her.....
She didn’t think it was anything to worry about.
