Fall 2015
Started printing negatives from the trip.
Unknown first generation immigrant relative on my mother’s side.
This 16″ x 20″ portrait was retouched by the photographer, but the original light-sensitive substrate is still clear.Â
This example is from my mother’s side of the family. It illustrates the vast difference in photographic training and technique between the professional portrait and the amateur snap shots of my father’s side of the family.
Preliminary research and route planning.
Overall journey and destinations including my childhood home and my uncle’s grave site.
Bifurcation FallacyÂ
Spring 2015.
A former band mate graduated college and started touring as a full-time musician. I considered joining him on the road, but decided to finish school instead. I used this project as a window view the life I might have chosen, and might still choose.
A Drive Through Historic Lenah, Virginia.
To prepare myself for the journey to my distant home of Minnesota, I traveled to Lenah, Virginia. Many of my relatives on my mother’s side called Lenah home decades ago. I never knew Lenah in that way, but I can tell how much it has changed over the years, and is still changing.
Savage Minnesota
This blog will catalog my progress beginning August 2015 on an on-going photography project tentatively titled Savage Minnesota.Â
The project will be an investigation into my family history and home. It will try to bridge the gap between the past and my present life and identity, which feels increasingly disjointed.
Some of the images on this blog will be purely for context, some will be seen in the final product. Some images will be made myself, and some will be appropriated; originally produced decades ago by unnamed family members of unnamed relatives.
