Nathaniel bit out a humourless laugh when Elijah’s attentions were diverted to the Andersen offsprings’ weekly drama dinner. Jacob had raised his head and his eyes darted about the room. At once, Nathaniel slid further down in his chair, foregoing thinking about how Elijah would interpret that and simply sitting with his ass half hanging off the seat.

He didn’t bother to sit up when the waitress came across to deposit a glass of wine in front of Elijah. The look on her face made it clear that she was surprised by the presence of another person at the table, having probably thought that the blonde was going to be by himself all night. While he wasn’t Elijah’s preferred choice of company at that moment, Nathaniel was content to stand in, if only so the boy wouldn’t be subject to the waitress’ tittering laughter. She seemed like the type to thrive on other people’s pain; maybe that’s why Jacob had been making eyes at her.

She soon walked away and Nathaniel simply shrugged at Eli’s comment, about to say that he didn’t want anything when the lacrosse player leaned across and picked a stray pea from the collar of his jacket.

“Well, that’s embarrassing,” he laughed, shaking his head at himself. “I’d steal your wine but… that looks expensive and way too classy for me.”

He let out a short, bitter laugh, Jacob’s words still ringing in his ears. His fingers twitched and he fought the urge to clench them, knowing that the action, however reflexive it was, could look dangerous to any onlookers, especially given the rigid set of his shoulders. As touchy a subject as it was, he found himself steering the conversation back around to Elijah again.

“So, who’s the dumbass that didn’t show up?” he asked.

He frowned lightly as he watched Nathaniel slide down in his seat until he was almost horizontally, like he was avoiding someone’s gaze, but he didn’t want to crane his neck to see, and from where he was sat he couldn’t see what Nathaniel had seen. The uncomfortable look on his face, which had grown steadily more disquieted also told him it probably wasn’t a good idea to ask. Even though he was bursting to, Eli actually did have some manners so he knew better than to go poking around the business of an almost-stranger.

The bark of a laugh unsettled the lacrosse player slightly, as he realised that Nathaniel was in as bad of a mood as he was, despite the winning smile he’d worn when he’d sauntered over to his table.

“Oh I doubt that,” he said pushing the glass to the middle of the table in case Nathaniel should change his mind. He was about to ask why he’d left his own party, and the words were on the tip of his tongue when Nathaniel distracted him by asking him a question.

“Oh just some guy I met, he goes to school with me. He seemed kind of smart actually. Though not smart enough to use his phone it seems,” he smiled humourlessly, still feeling the remnants of his annoyance towards Wardo. He picked up the phone that sat on the table beside him and flicked it on to see he had no new messages, and just a picture of him and his sister pulling two stupid faces stared back up at him.

“Still, his loss right?” he said, sighing, and looking away from his phone, and back up at the pilot who sat opposite him. His curiosity winning out, he couldn’t help but ask;

“How come you aren’t sitting with them?” he asked, nodding to the table somewhere behind Nathaniel’s head, “I mean besides the tiny little tearaway. I don’t want to keep you from them if it’s something important.”

He realised it was a slightly leading question, since only a complete idiot wouldn’t be able to work out that something was up. And it wasn’t like he wanted to watch Nathaniel squirm, or make him uncomfortable, though that would probably happen. Mostly he was just intrigued by him, and maybe a little concerned.
