âDo you really think thatâs a good idea?â
âHis name is Manish,â Rohit said in response to the question. Heâd only just acquired the emotional support dog recently, for which he got permission to keep in Ashworth. Despite his bitter exterior, Rohit had experience caring for a dog, since his family had adopted one as a pet seven years earlier.
âHeâs the cutest little thing,â Kaylie couldnât help but smile, her fingertips ran themselves through the puppyâs fur. âIs he going to get any bigger?â she asked curiously, not having much experience in dog breeds or anything of the sort.Â
âIâm not sure mine know what school Iâm at either, they certainly didnât ask. But then again, I havenât spoken to them since I turned eighteen.â he said with a small shrug. He would have been happy to keep things that way if Harmony hadnât wanted him to invite them to the wedding. He was tired of letting them hurt him by making it so obvious they didnât care. It was easier to just cut them out of his life entirely. âLike I said, parents suck. I prefer the âchoose your own familyâ idea.â
âI havenât spoken to mine in a few weeks, but how old are you, anyway?â she asked curiously as she began flipping through numerous of pages in her book. âItâs too bad we canât though. I donât think being used to disappointment should even be a thing, too depressing, yet Iâm too nice of a person to cut them out of my life completely,â she laughed softly, more so to herself because of how pathetic she was. âYeah, Iâm going to have to agree with you on that one."
"Yeah, tell me about," she responded while her fingertips fiddled around with the pen in between them. "I think mines take the award for the worst tho. It's sad, really, they didn't even know I transferred univerisites," shaking her head she tried to focus back on her textbook, but failed to do so. "It's whatever tho. I don't care." she actually did care, but she wasn't going to let anyone, not even her own family know she secretly did.
âOh, no, continue texting, really, these books are practically being held on their own,â she rolled her eyes as she walked into the room, practically throwing the books on the nearest table, and stretching her arms afterwards. âYou sure you donât want to block the door for the professor as well? Iâm sure heâd enjoy that.â
âAnd last time I checked I said excuse me didnât I? Itâs good to know youâre not deaf just an imbecile,â being fed up from waiting, the books in her hand only seeming to get heavier, Kaylie sighed again. âAre you going to move or does your phone have to die in order to get one word of what Iâm saying into your brain?â
Cade stopped in the side of the hallway, backpack slung over one shoulder, when he felt his phone buzz. Looking down at it, the brunet unintentionally stopped right in front of a door, not realizing that he was even blocking anything.
Sighing, Kaylie situated the numerous amounts of books in her arm to the other. âUh, excuse me, youâre blocking the doorway,â didnât seem like the other was even paying attention, which just annoyed her even more. All she wanted to do was get some homework done somewhere quiet. âAre you deaf?â she snapped her fingers, waving her hand in front of the maleâs face.
âI believe you,â she responded. They both werenât close to each other, they just both knew Rohit. Her cousin wasnât a bad person, he just did bad things sometimes. âI am more than fine. I usually am fine. How are classes going for you?â
âOh, uh, the classes are great,â she said shrugging her shoulders. âItâs a whole lot different and less stressful than NYU, but theyâre not bad. I understand things better here, theyâre less complicated. I guess the environment takes a huge part in that. What about you though? How are the classes in your end?â
Preity stepped inside the room, looking over at her cousinâs ex-girlfriend. She had never blamed Kaylie for the breakup, in fact she liked Kaylie - she blamed her cousin greatly. âIf you say so,â she sat down on the seat opposite her, smiling pleasantly. âIâve been focused on my prayers over the last few days.â
âYep, Iâm fine, I swear,â she began flipping pages from the book as she spoke, but looked up at Preity once the answer to why she had been MIA lately came up. âOh, well thatâs good I suppose, so Iâm assuming youâre alright yourself?â
âI only arrived a few minutes ago.â The older girl responded as she leaned against the doorway. She hadnât meant to overhear what the other was talking about but it was kind of impossible not to with the small physical distance between the two. âAre you alright?â
She moved her focus to looking down at the textbook in front of her. It was her lame attempt to avoid the somewhat awkwardness between the two. âYeah, uh, Iâm alright,â nodding, Kaylie gave the other a fabricated smile. âI havenât seen you in quite sometime.â
Kaylie sighed at the numerous of missed outgoing calls from both her parents. Itâs been weeks since they even checked in on her. She could have been in the hospital and they would have no clue. âWell, they canât say I didnât make an effort,â she threw her phone on the other side of the table and glanced towards the doorway, slightly jumping once realizing there was someone else on the other side. âOh, uh, I didnât know anyone was here.â
Truthfully, it surprised him to hear Kaylieâs reassurances he should keep working on things. Sheâd always been too good for him, yet it still made Rohit pause a little to realize she hadnât necessarily given up on him long ago. âBaby steps,â he repeated, knowing she was certainly right there. Swallowing, Rohit gave a slow nod, her offer meaning more to him than he could put into words. âThank you. I mean it. And I promise Iâll do my best not to let you regret saying that.â
Again. His words. It was weird, the feeling he still somewhat gave her, but she couldnât do much besides avoid it. She wasnât going to get her hopes up on him actually changing only to be let down. Still, what she said to him was true, and had the time come where he needed her, then she would still be there for him. âYeah, uh,â biting down on her lower lip, Kaylie nodded her head. âI should probably get to studying.â
He nodded, very certain he wanted to change. Rohitâs relapse into bitterness had only proved to him how necessary changing was at this point. âI was. At least, I think I was. But I also think I was relying too much on that, so when things started coming to a halt, I just sort of⌠fell apart. Iâve never been the type to give up. I just got used to doing it for so long now,â he told her, finding the words foreign yet the sentiment true. âI want to actually make it happen this time. For myself, and for everyone around me.â
His words sort of warmed her heart, like she was almost genuinely able to believe him. It was time she actually forgave what he had done to her years ago. Although seeing him as much as she was brought a constant reminder of what happened, Kaylie still knew when something was time to be put in the past. âWell, things get hard all the time, but that doesnât mean you should stop trying to reach your goal,â she responded. âIf youâre making progress, thatâs fine, and when certain days come when you feel like youâre not, then thatâs fine too, yâknow, baby steps,â her next words were almost unable to escape her lips, but for some reason she still said them. âIâll be here for you if anything.â
He nodded slowly, knowing she was right. Then again, hadnât she always been? Rohit couldnât recall a time in knowing her when her ideas hadnât seemed like the best ones. âIâm sorry for⌠ruining that.â Of course heâd proven otherwise after the accident, yet Rohit also knew he hadnât been the best of people back in high school. Pompousness and a slight reckless streak werenât the greatest qualities. âI- I wish I could give you a reason to think so again.â The words surprised even him.
âYou told me you want to change, right? I might believe in that again,â she said as her fingers fiddled around with the edges of the books in her hand. She shook the thoughts of him still remaining the same person he currently was away from her mind. It wasn't something that made her happy, but she was still prepared to be let down, like always. âA few weeks ago you seemed to have been making progress."
âIf you start thinking like that then youâll never get anything done,â Kaylie replied. It surprised her that he was even admitting as much as he was, but she wasnât going to complain. If anything, their whole entire conversation reminded her of how they used to be, back when they were close, and he just ranted to her about whatever was on his mind. She nodded her head, smiling somewhat. âYeah, of course, you were always a good person in my eyes.â
"Well, you should do it for yourself not because someone else told you to," she explained. "Or at least because you want to take back hurting those you have," she added shrugging her shoulders. "You wouldn't be doing it for nothing, Rohit. It'd just be better than taking your anger out on other people. At least try to be better for yourself. You were once upon a time," picking up her textbooks from the table, she looked over at the other side of the library. "You know, I'd love to see that person again. I know he still exists." these words were whispered this time, her eyes glanced over at him.
