yuki cross is the protagonist and heroine of hit 2000s trashy vampire romance manga vampire knight infamous for (1) being embroiled in a twilight-esque love triangle with her self-loathing vampire hunter vampire love interest (raised in the same house, technically her brother) and her uber posh other vampire love interest (revealed to be her brother/ancestor because reincarnation or whatever) that resolves with her getting with and having children with both of them and (2) being boring as hell. weirdly enough lestat is also doing both things :|

also full disclosure i have been reading almost none of em's many many tvl posts to have context for how much of what ive said are things she's alr posted aksjdhfsdf cause i have just been bitching with the girls and gays in dms. and then she brings it to the people.

i have limited avenues to vent my frustrations about this new season but the fact the introductory scene had lestat narrate about his "oedipiphany" and uses that exact word twice in the same minute or so like he's especially proud of himself for coming up with it tells everything i need to know. i watched tvl ep 1 and asked myself "is the show tonally so cringe and defensive and insecure intentionally to reflect lestat's pov or am i expected to be entralled by this" and i still have no answers because the dip in quality feels that unjustifiable. "the fang gang," "i've been fondling my thoughts," daniel being an "out and proud" vampire, etc etc. the puerile insistence that vampires pee thank you very much. it's insane. it's actually insane. it's so attached to edge with a fraction of the depth if any. it's cheap and not even in a fun way. its biggest crime is not being engaging which i assumed the series would never fall to it's driving me crazy. literally the entire second episode was dedicated to his relationship with gabriella at the cost of any illuminating perspective we could get on lestat as "our new protagonist" either through or beyond that relationship. no one cares that you're fucking your mom lestat. im annoyed that you're boring me. go be yuki cross somewhere else!!!

ok i will start out controversial to my haterism by saying i will push back vaguely with the strength of a single pinky finger on stupid dialogue or pee monologue making sense in the context of attempting to capture the spirit of lestat and anne rice and whatnot like ok i'll entertain that defense BUT.

as i was sitting with e1 i think honestly like. yes i have been jesting forever about tvl being jealous of true blood with aesthetics and w/e but really on the most serious level imo the most significant thing is when it comes to any possible defense of the dogshit dialogue like. true blood is not high art and certainly not a writing style for everyone but if crazy camp tv IS your thing true blood is literally theeeeeeee master of the one liner that has you scratching your head like wow you can really say anything on tv. but in a way that clearly is in line with the core identity of the show.

like i think that's just ultimately one of the most humiliating things for tvl. there is literally a model for how to do this in an aesthetically coherent manner innnn a vampire show. and i dont need it to be meeting that bar let alone surpassing it but they are not even meeting my minimum requirement of entertaining me w this lol

and i did predict the show having that problem but the part im learning as it airs is that it specifically feels like its shortcomings are coming from this hyper-consciousness of fandom and like seeking engagement guiding writing choices and its driving me up a goddamn walllllllllllllll. and is even more humiliating than simply lacking the comedic writing chops like between the unfunny dialogue and dear god the presentation of lestat/gabriell@'s relationship like why does it legitimately feel like we are watching the writers room's letter to twitter instead of a television show. as you said just unbearably defensive and insecure.

and my irl life involves a lot of erotica history research, so like. i shall just say it i am used to looking at incest as like a literary fact of a text. this does not mean i am neutral on the subject nor ambivalent about its portrayal in creative works but it does mean considering and analyzing its narrative placement is fairly normal to me. so, while i understand and respect this being the case for others, viscerally reacting to the mere fact of its inclusion in sth is just not an element of my viewing experience. and in terms of a broader analysis of what they're doing with it here i do think its too soon to say anything comprehensive but i think viewers are well within their rights to discuss its introduction and i feel very comfortable saying a frightened-of-twitter-callout-forward approach to it is certainly not the answer to the discomfort it brings.

it legit felt like episode 2 was one extended apology for including it and its like if you're going to do it THEN JUST DO IT dear god. if you feel the need to derail your entire plot with apologies then like they literally could have cut it and they didn't. i would not have had a problem with this. it could have worked without it. this is like rly just one corner of my complaints i could keep going but overall i think they all connect back to the fact that imo they gave themselves way more responsibilities than they were prepared to actually take on. between completely dropping the discussion of race that made a 2020s tvc adaptation possible to begin with, seemingly being terrified of broaching the topic of incest despite choosing to put it in there, making louis not-loathsome and flailing over how to walk back audience investment to make anyone give a shit about lestat, like just. a whole laundry list of adaptational graves the show dug itself. and they just seem entirely unprepared to commit to following through on them. MESSSSSSSSSSSY but i will cut this off here.

actually the craziest thing was the one random cameo they gave a guy who technically was sookie's random fairy cousin named claude as a brief reference to the book characters existence but he was literally just some guy who was on screen for like 2 seconds rather than being a major character who incited global chaos and evil thus rendering him one of the only readable things about the last few nearly unreadable tsvm novels
