Yahoo Interview with Mackenzie Irwin
Mackenzie had never been interviewed before, and even being associated with a big name, she never thought she would be. So when she was told that she was wanted for a sit down interview with Yahoo, she hadn’t expected it. She had agreed though. If all they wanted was to sit down and talk about the bands and the tour, she was definitely down for that. “Mackenzie Irwin?” a petite redheaded woman asked as Mack was lead into the room for the interview. “Hello, my name’s Julia Maddox, I’ll be leading this interview today. Pleasure to meet you.”
Mack smiled and extended her hand, shaking Julia’s hand. “Pleasure to meet you, too, Julia,” she said. “I’m really excited to be here.” Mack was seated on a couch beside Julia, and they made small talk as mics were put on them both. It wasn’t but minutes later when they were told the hangout was beginning, and someone behind the camera was starting the Google Hangout up and counting them down. Mack didn’t say much at first, letting Julia do the talking and the introductions. Mack wasn’t really the shy type, but she didn’t know what to say in this type of situation, so she just didn’t talk until she was directly asked a question.
“Now, let’s get started,” Julia said, turning her body to face Mack more. Mack did the same. “I’m sure any 5SOS fan will recognize you, but for those who don’t, why don’t you introduce yourself? Tell everyone at home who you are, and how they might know you.”
“Hello,” Mack said, smiling at the camera. “My name’s Mackenzie Irwin, or just ‘Mack’, whatever you all prefer, and I am 21 years old. Fans probably know me because my cousin is Ashton, the drummer from 5 Seconds of Summer.”
“Wonderful,” Julia said. “And you are joining your cousin and the band on their current tour, correct? How did this come about?”
“Yes!” Mack confirmed excitedly. “I am. Honestly, I’ve always wanted to see the world so I kind of weaseled my way here. I wish I could say that I was desperately wanted, but I just talked my way into it.” She laughed. “Ash was cool with letting me come, he did offer once I kind of hinted at it a million times. I had some time free, and I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t take this chance when I had it. I’m really lucky to have a cousin cool enough to let me tag along as he lives his rockstar life. Seriously, so thankful for Ash.”
Julia nodded along, smiling politely as Mack finished. “You mentioned always wanting to see the world, are there any particular countries or cities you’re looking forward to traveling, too?”
“Oh, yes,” Mack answered. “I’ve only been out of Australia twice. I went to London once, and I’ve been to Los Angeles before. Both of those locations were wonderful, so I’m looking forward to returning there. New York City has always been high on the list of places I want to go, so I’ll say New York. Hopefully I can find someone to go see a Broadway show with me, and to Central Park. All those touristy things.” She laughed. “I think being in America in general will be cool.”
“Wonderful,” Julia said again. “So we all know that Ashton, from 5SOS, is your cousin. So you might have a biased answer here, but out of all the bands on tour, do you have a favorite? Because not only will 5SOS be touring, but along with them are their supporting acts, Angels Over Demons and Saving Annie.”
Mack nodded, smiling at the mention of the other two bands. “I have to say, I really love both of those bands. Not only the music, but the people, too. You know, I am a sucker for girl groups. So you’re right, I do a have a bias, I have to say 5SOS, but... Angels Over Demons also have a special place in my heart. So does Saving Annie, though. Really, all three bands are great and I can’t wait to watch them all every night. I promise kickass performances every night - oh, sorry, can I say kickass?”
Julia waved her concerns off. “You’re fine,” she laughed before continuing. “Speaking of favorites, I’m sure the fans out there would like to get to know you a little more since they’ll be seeing so much of you during the tour. What are some of your favorite things? Foods, TV shows, color, songs? Things like that?”
“Hmmm,” Mack thought for a moment. Picking her favorite anything was tough, because that changed day to day, but she could try. “This is hard, but I think as of right now, my favorite color is purple, but I like wearing dark colors like black, too. My favorite food, no question, is pizza. My go-to food order is a pizza with extra cheese, bacon, mushroom and sausage. Seriously so good. Picking a favorite show or a favorite song is super, super hard because those answers change literally everyday. Right now, I’m loving Brooklyn Nine Nine. That show’s so funny, and the cast is incredible. I adore Terry Crews. Now, my favorite song... I’m gonna have to give you a list, is that okay?” Julia nodded, so Mack continued. “Okay, thank you,” she laughed. “Alright, right now my top five songs are Down By The Water by The Drums, Stressed Out by Twenty One Pilots, Sting by The Neighbourhood, I Think I'm In Love by Kat Dahlia, and... Hey Everybody by 5 Seconds of Summer.” She put a thumbs up and winked at the camera.
Julia laughed at that. “Yes, nice, bringing it all back to 5SOS,” she said. “Thank you for that great segue. You’re touring with them, and I imagine that in and of itself is pretty exciting. But, to wrap things up with the last question here, what is the thing you’re most excited about?”
Mack sighed in thought. “This is going to sound cheesy and I’m sorry, I hate sappy stuff, but honestly, just spending time with Ashton. It’s so rare nowadays that we get to hang out, so it’s really nice to be on this journey with him. It’s great to see all the boys again. I’ve always had good friendships with them all, so it’s fun to hang out with them again, as well as make new friendships with the rest of the tour crew. Aside from that, getting to see the world and experience new things will be amazing. I’m hoping to learn a little about myself in the process.”
Julia gave her a friendly smile before looking back to the camera, where she took a couple minutes to wrap things up. Soon enough, they were being told the hangout was over and they were all done. “That was lovely,” Julia said, giving Mack a brief hug. “Thank you. Have fun on tour, and good luck to everyone.”
“Thanks so much,” Mack said, waving goodbye as Julia was ushered away, and Mack was soon being lead away as well. All in all, she’d say that didn’t go too bad.
