Today’s insect is a master of disguise. 🥸Meet the beautiful orchid mantis (Hymenopus coronatus). With back legs that change color and resemble petals, this insect blends in perfectly among flowers. But don’t be fooled by its pretty, pink appearance! This critter is a formidable predator. It uses its spiny front legs to grab prey, like spiders and insects, which often mistake the mantis for a flower. It can be spotted in parts of Asia including Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.

Bijlia dilatata

Bijlia dilatata is one of the many mesembs, or members of the Ice Plant Family, found in southern Africa. It is sometimes called the Prince Albert Vygie - "vygie" being a South African general term for succulents in the Ice Plant Family, and Prince Albert being the town adjacent to where this species grows. The plant is like a living sculpture, and it is astounding to see how many large bright-yellow flowers it makes when its blooming time arrives!
