“Yeah, I guess there’s no point in eating breadcrumbs when you can just turn into a human and buy it.” Nick nodded and looked at the bird before at this boy who was talking to him. He was almost positive they were in the same year, maybe it was worth keeping the conversation going. “Ever thought of what animal you would be if you were an Animagus?”

“That’s true. Although I feel like maybe the person would buy a whole bread loaf or slice instead of buying just the crumbs. Maybe some olive oil and garlic or something, make it all fancy for dipping. Perks of being not a bird.” Pua made a face at the question, trying to think of the answer. “Something that eats pineapple. Maybe a monkey? South American located most likely. What about you?”

“Maybe. I don’t think its necessarily a weird thing, I think people do pet dates at least every now and again, although i’ve never done one.” Not only did it require Viola to be in the mood, she herself needed to have someone she wanted to spend time with who also owned a pet that might be on that date. It was a lot of moving parts she’d never quite managed. “Oh of course your mother loves you, don’t be silly.”

“Well if you’re ever in the mood for a super fun pet filled afternoon let me know.” He grinned before shifting awkwardly, not knowing what to say, “She does, she’s lovely. Get’s me a lot of fruit, hasn’t kicked me or any animals out. If that’s not love, I don’t know what is.”

“Yeah, but then you froze like a deer in headlights. So you’re welcome for me saving us both.” She chuckled. He was such a pacifist. She could tell he was probably annoyed, but he didn’t want to flat out say it.  “You’re welcome again. For the excitement and all. I’m nothing if not down for a good ol’ adventure. Even though this was short-lived.”

“Yes because I didn’t plan for that situation. It’s kinda a weird thing to spring on someone who’s just trying to get a smoothie. I had simply plans and you complicated them and it’s fine, don’t worry about it. It’s taken care of now and we’re both fine so, no worries. I’m not even mad.” He made a face as she said that he was welcome, “Right, sure. Thank you? Maybe. I don’t really think so, but it’s fine I said it.” Wynn shook his head, looking back to her, “Moana likes adventures too. I’m sorta used to it.”

Zira stares at the two packages in her hands. The little grocery store is largely quiet this late at night, particularly quiet for the Summer, as Hogsmeade empties of its younger population for the holiday. She can’t decide between the two. One is only slightly less expensive than the other, but its quality is also slightly worse. Is it worth it? She can’t decide. 

Oh no. 

Wynn’s eyes widened at the now wobbling stack of fruit. This was why his mother always told him to pick from the top not the bottom. It wasn’t really his fault that the best mangos were on the bottom of the pile. Besides, who thought it was a good idea to make a fruit tower? 

He frantically tried to hold the tower up while also attempting to catch the few pieces that were falling. He managed to do neither. As the mangos scattered around the floor, tumbling from the stand they’d been in and seemingly rolling forever across the nearly empty store. 

Oh no. 

His eyes followed the original offending mango, had it not been so perfect this never would have happened. While he was going to pick up all of them, or as many as he could he started to follow that one first, freezing when it hit a girl’s shoe. 

Oh no. Oh no. Oh no. 

“Hey, sorry... I think I dropped a mango or two...” He said while gesturing awkwardly to her shoe before bending down, picking up the fruit that had just barely bumped her.

Lyle had just recently returned from a short “vacation” he had taken.  It was somewhat enjoyable except for the few times he had to dispose of some people.  It always baffled Lyle how many people were complete idiots.  Including this idiotic boy who had the nerve to start a conversation with him.  When Lyle heard the ‘psst’ he began to let out an annoyed sigh but quickly stifled it.   “Well, most animals usually have a one track mind.  So its most likely thinking about what it’s going to eat. “  Lyle answered as he looked at the crow pecking around at the ground.  Hopefully that answer would be good enough to have this kid leave him alone.

Wynn heard the sigh and was instantly got ready to turn back away from him. He didn’t want to bother anyone. He just wanted to ask a quick question and if it wasn’t appreciated then he was more than willing to leave the person alone. When he got an answer he turned back, nodding slowly, “Do you think he’s hungry then? Maybe I should get him some food.” He really didn’t seem to want to chat, but Wynn couldn’t help himself now that he’d started it.

“Except they don’ need to think, do they?” Logan asked, talking through his ass. He remembered something about most animals not having thoughts the same way people did - someone said something about that at some point. Magical animals might’ve, but he was quite sure nonmagical creatures were just. Animals. That was why he liked them a far sight more than people, at least - no ulterior motives, no secrets. They just went around, living, and that was about all. “They jus’ know ta fly and eat an’ all that shit.”

“I think they need to think a little... You know, to avoid dying?” He spoke though rather than making a statement it seemed to become a question. “I think at least.” He still wasn’t sure, the man did seem to have a point, but Pua was pretty sure they had to think a little. All animals must. Even natural instincts required thinking, even if it wasn’t thought they were consciously aware of. “That seems so... Unexciting. To just think it’s so black and white. Something else must be going on. I mean they make nests right, haven’t you ever seen them trying to pick what they want and what they don’t want?”

Donald smiled, but did so softly. The energy was a bit much with this kid, however he wasn’t going to be outright mean. “Yeah, I tend to like it for that. Also makes me think more about my shots. I… ugh… I got some chemicals and stuff and take time developing them too, sometimes. Unfortunately, it also means its a lot more expensive.” He smiled, “Not everyone carries film as much for it.”

“That’s a good point.” Wynn agreed, he hadn’t considered the cost, though he hadn’t really considered doing photography much himself. The fact that it was expensive did make sense though. It always seemed that things got more expensive as they aged. “That’s unfortunate. Seems like something you’d have to buy in bulk then. Which is hard when things are expensive.”

“Enthralling facts indeed, Mister Pua.  Makes me thankful that we as the human species do not have to like our eyes to keep them from drying out,” he chuckled.  “And is that so about pineapples?  I so rarely eat them, but I have always noticed the little bit of tingling on my tongue when I do consume them!  And here I thought it was simply due to be partially allergic to the fruit!  Well-shared, my boy!  At least that simply means we must eat the pineapples before they eat us, eh?”

“I agree, it would freak me out a little. It freaks me out watching it being done and I can’t imagine having to do it myself.” He shivered a little, trying to imagine the feeling of his tongue on his eyeball. “Wait, you rarely eat pineapples?” He asked, shaking his head, “Why? It’s the single greatest fruit that exists. Moana brings me them sometimes and they’re amazing. I’m going to bring you some okay? I think you just need to try some of the greatest pineapples ever in order to fully appreciate the amazing potential that the fruit possesses. Have you ever had it grilled?”

“She sounds a little like Viola. Viola is very stubborn and doesn’t really like to make any new friends, but she’s wonderful anyway. And when she’s in the mood, she likes to spend time curled up with me.” All right, that meant he was actually doing better than she had thought. She knew of the local farmers, but she rarely interacted with them. There wasn’t much call for that between her cleaning, studying, and investing. “Oh. Well. I suppose that’s all right then.”

“It’s too bad she doesn’t like meeting new friends because we could have had a cat playdate. Wait do people do that or was that weird? Is it weird to offer a cat up for a playdate?” He made a face before shrugging, deciding that he didn’t really care. Cats could use friends too he supposed. “Yeah I mean, I really do try to bring them home first, but if that doesn’t happen then they get to just move to my home and my mother pretends to still love me. Kidding. Of course. She loves me. I hope.”

“Huh, I don’t know,” Nick replied, now looking at the bird. Probably just crumbs? But that reply seemed obvious. Instead, Nick threw a question back at him, “Do you think that animagus ever have a temptation to do things their animal form naturally does? Like, if someone was a crowanimagus, would they ever think to pick at the ground for crumbs?”

“I’m not sure.” Pua answered honestly, looking down at the crow and grinning as he imagined a human in it’s place. “I wouldn’t say so far as picking at the ground for crumbs, but there’s some research that says anamangi share traits with their animal counterpart.”

Valorie put her hands on her hips. “Alright wise-guy. I appreciate the smoothie offer, heck, I’m gonna let you get me it! I just wanted to get us both away from that creep first. You were floundering a bit, dude.” She chuckled. It really was all in good fun. “You’re as sweet as candy, okay? And look–Smoothie shop not too far from here. I helped us get there faster without being followed by a creep. You’re welcome.”

“You’re welcome?” Pua squinted his eyes a little as he stared at her, shaking his head a little. “I... What? No. Valorie. No. What are you even talking about? I didn’t have a problem with a creepy dude until you jumped on me. Like... Just to make that clear.” He made a face shaking his head a little as he walked towards the smoothie shop. “I can say for a sure fact that without you I wouldn’t have had this adventure today so I guess that’s something. I wouldn’t say it’s good or bad, but it’s something.”

“Hm… no you’re right.  I think they’re different,” she chuckled.  It was a confusing distinction even she didn’t fully understand.  She giggled at his joke.  “Is there a badge that comes with that role?”

“I mean, they’re both birds and they both are... dark colored?” He made a face, shrugging a little awkwardly. “I hope so. I could really use a badge. I think my mother would be very excited. Also my dog is always weirdly proud of me so I think he’d go crazy.”

“Oh, I’m just not particularly excited about the majority of them. I love my cat Viola, but that’s different. And I guess I’m less excited about birds than most.” There was something about them that tended to put her on edge. It was the reason she’d gone for a cat all those years ago instead of owning an owl or anything like that. Still, she listened to his story with growing interest. “Really. Did you check with some of the local farmers and shepherds? They don’t always come into town, but they would be the mos tlikely to know if anyone lost a sheep in the area.”

“That’s fair enough, my mom has a cat and she’s pretty great. She gets a little mad at me though. I bring too many friends home that she doesn’t want to be friends with. She’s fluffy though and basically a space heater. So when it’s cold and she sits on your lap or feet it’s perfect.” Wynn nodded as she spoke, grinning, “Yeah they know me really well. My mom is always looking to find homes for the animals, so I like to visit them and see if they have space. Plus they have the best snacks.”

Logan counted the kid’s lucky stars for him, praising the nonexistent gods that he hadn’t been stupid enough to touch him. When he opened mouth, however, Logan rescinded his thanks quite quickly, falling back into a place of questioning his damn horrid luck and swivelling his head with a glare. “D’you jus’ ask me about a fuckin’ bird’s thoughts?” He asked, no real force propelling his malice. “Like ‘at’s something normal people think about?”

Wynn nodded at the first question, waiting to see what the answer would be. He didn’t get an answer though. Instead he found himself frowning a little instead. Normal people? Did that mean that he wasn’t normal? “Well personally I thought that I was normal and I think about it sometimes. They fly around looking for food and walking around. There must be some kind of thought process going on in their heads. It hasn’t even made you wonder?”

Marbles, this guy was not the brains of the operation for sure. “Yeah, right. Move faster, before we miss our appointment..” She sped up, rounding one corner and then another. She was trying to move around in random directions to ensure that creep couldn’t follow them if they wanted to. After doing this for a good five minutes, she stopped, looking back to see if Wynn had even bothered to follow. “He is not the fastest….” she mumbled, mostly to herself.

Pua followed half a step behind her, quickly growing confused with all the twisting and turning. He had a feeling that he wasn’t going to stop being confused for the entirely time that he was with Valorie. He was trying, almost. She wasn’t even attempting to make it easy on him though. “Hey!” He argued, making a face as her while he crossed his arms, “Rude. I’m doing nothing but being nice to you, you could at least try to not be mean to me in the process. I didn’t do anything to you...” He trailed off, rubbing the back of his neck as he kicked a small rock by his foot, “I offered you a smoothie.”

Donald smirked at the excited boy, though wary of all that energy. Too much energy always put him off and stressed him out. “Yeah, I think so. Won’t know until they’re developed, of course. Old school camera. But I think it’s good. Looked good through the lense.”

“Dude no way.” Pua jumped closer, trying to get a better look at the camera without invading personal space or making any attempt to touch. Touching people’s things without asking was just plain rude. He hated when people did it to him and he wasn’t about to do it to someone else. “I’ve never used one but I’ve always thought they looked so cool. There’s something that’s pretty interesting about the idea that it’s so weirdly permanent. Like I can just delete my selfie, but that... That’s there. You develop the negatives, then it’s there, even if you don’t print it, it’s still there, however I looked in that second. It’s more intentional. It’s more real if you think about it.”

John snorted out a laugh into his drink. “Ah, Pua! Yer a good egg, ye are. Well, while yer here, be sure to watch these gaffers. Ye can learn a lot just by how a person drinks ye know.” 

Pua pouted a little at the laugh, spinning his glass between his hands, “I figured it out, I just didn’t automatically think about it...” He looked up from his lemonade, turning to his professor with a curious expression, “What do you? What types of things am I supposed to be able to learn?”
