"La Belle Dame sans Merci" (1901)
by Frank Bernard Dicksee (1853–1928)
Oil on canvas
Title: Jesus Washing Peter's Feet Artist: Ford Madox Brown (English, 1821-1893) Date: between 1852 and 1856 Genre: religious art (Christianity) Movement: Pre-Raphaelite Period: Victorian Medium: oil on canvas Dimensions: 116.8 cm (45.9 cm) high x 133.3 cm (52.4 in) wide Location: Tate Britain, London, England, UK
For Western Christians, today marks Maundy Thursday within the liturgical calendar. According to the Gospels, it was on the Thursday before his crucifixion that Jesus ate the Last Supper with his disciples. On that evening, he washed his disciples' feet, which Christian theologians construe as a symbol of his servanthood to humankind. Here, Peter, the "Prince of the Apostles", sits quietly while Jesus, readily identifiable by his halo, washes his right foot. In the background, the other disciples look on with varying degrees of interest or confusion. One figure in shadow who grasps his head in his hands likely represents Judas Iscariot.
Ford Madox Brown was born in the port city of Calais, France, to impoverished parents. He was initially self-taught, then pursued formal study in Belgium. A member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Brown had a particular interest in depicting scenes of ordinary individuals in trying circumstances, as seen in his famous paintings The Last of England and Work. The town hall of Manchester, England, contains a cycle of murals by Brown depicting the city's history.
Theater in Taormina by Gustav Klimt
Title: The Crucifixion with the Virgin, St. John, and Mary Magdalene Artist: Anthony van Dyck (Flemish [active in England], 1599-1641) Date: between 1617 and 1619 Genre: religious art (Christianity) Movement: Baroque Medium: oil on canvas Dimensions: 330 cm (10.8 ft) high x 282 cm (9.3 ft) wide Location: Louvre Museum, Paris, France
This impressively large painting dramatizes Christ's suffering on the Cross in the intense, rich style characteristic of the Flemish Baroque. Christ's head, crowned with thorns, slumps down, while blood pours from his side as a result of the wound inflicted by a Roman centurion's spear. A placard above his head reads "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews" in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.
The three figures who attend him vary strikingly in their attitudes. The Virgin Mary, in blue, looks on with tender concern, her fingers entwined, while John, in a red cloak, presses his hand to his throat. Far more demonstrative than either is Mary Magdalene, who kneels and clasps Jesus's feet, her blonde hair cascading freely down her golden garment.
