Could you make a Mapleshade drawing? :3
here ya go :D
why did warrior cats convince us that cobwebs, a silk that's thinner than a cats whisker, could be used in any form as a substitute for bandages?
Using cobwebs was actually common back before modern medicine (if Wikipedia is anything to go by)
But I remember as a kid watching a show about animal attacks and this one guy was able to stop the bleeding after having his arm bitten off by a crocodile by remembering this! So when I was reading warrior cats for the first time I was like “OH yeah! I remember that.”
Quick swing-in; the confusion comes from most people simply not knowing that there is a difference between a bandage and a dressing in woundcare.
A dressing is what goes onto the injury itself. A bandage keeps it in place. When you unwrap a bandaid/plaster; the sticky part is the bandage, the pad is the dressing.
The silk of many spiders has properties that help to stop bleeding and promote wound healing. Some species may* even have antimicrobial properties, helping to prevent infections. Because of that, they were used through history as a dressing.
may* = silk antiseptics are a current subject of medical debate and I have not yet reviewed enough of the literature to explain where the science points
It's WAAAAY too valuable to use as a whole bandage. If you wrapped it, you'd be wasting more than half of it on undamaged skin! You just ball up the web and stick it in the wound.
From there you'd make a bandage to hold it there. Good bandages include cloth, bindweed, ivy, so on.
Warriors has a lot of bogus treatments but web dressing is actually one that checks out. Mouse bile tick treatment is the most notably wrong medical thing in most WC books-- not counting that one time they did Deathberry Antibiotics.
