Super Saiyan Rewrite

(What if the Super Saiyan transformation worked differently for better narrative progression)

(please forgive my use of AI art for visual aids)

Saiyan Arc: after Vegeta creates his artificial moon and transforms into the mighty Oozaru, Goku has his realisation that he was the giant ape that killed his grandfather. The emotional turmoil and exposure to the artificial moon causes Goku's tail to regrow and he also transforms. Through his superior mental acuity in the Oozaru form, Vegeta wins the fight and pulls out Goku's tail. Gohan and Krillin save Goku, but then Gohan also transforms under the artificial moon. Vegeta: "Oh god, again?", but he is also successful in removing Gohan's tail. Unlike in the original story, it is now that Yajirobe swiftly cuts off Vegeta's tail while he is distracted by his triumph. From now the story progresses similarly, with Goku allowing Vegeta to leave Earth alive.

Freiza Arc: Things go the same way with some moments of wishing that, while the Oozaru transformation is a wild thing, it might have been helpful against Freiza so Holy must rely solely on the Kaioken. Until Freiza kills Krillin and Goku transforms into a super saiyan.

Cell Games Arc: Cell is lording his power over everyone and tormenting Gohan on Goku's promise of a sleeping power. When this power does emerge, Gohan taps into the Oozaru transformation despite not currently having a tail, and combines it with his active Super Saiyan transformation.

The year is 2359, by earth's calendar. But the human race expanded beyond earth centuries ago.

We spread out across the stars. Joined alliances and coalitions, and formed treaties with alien cultures.

We left behind archaic concepts like elitism and bigotry a long time ago.

And yet I'm currently sitting in a sensitivity seminar, being glared at by my peers, because I absent mindedly used the phrase "Buzz Off" to an annoying colleague who just happens to be insectoid.

Some things haven't changed.

Episode 5: The Duel

The rangers are excitedly practicing with their new Mystic Force ranger keys, trying to use various spells inside their hideout and seeing what they are capable of. This takes an unfortunate turn when spells are miscast or overlap as no one is coordinating. Jack (Blue) is frustrated at the carefree attitudes that everyone seems to have despite the reality of the situation and their responsibilities as rangers, and storms off.

While out Jack happens upon Skatana who is showing off his destruction swordsmanship to intimidate civilians into revealing anything they know about the rangers. Jack takes out his key and Morpher only to be stopped by Natalia (Pink) who accuses him of recklessness. Jack calms down and the two morph together. Jack confronts Skatana and Natalia attempts to deal with the X-borgs that Skatana calls for.

Shortly into the battle the other rangers arrive and assist Natalia before backing up Jack, all switching to their preferred red rangers. Skatana makes surprisingly quick work of the rangers except for Jack who is able to counter his swordplay while morphed into the Samurai red ranger, though not unscathed.

Skatana challenges Jack to a duel the next day, as the only one of the rangers that he respects as a swordsman. If Jack refuses then Skatana will simply destroy the other rangers right now. Jack of course agrees.

Back at the hideout Jack is furious with the other rangers and they argue about the lack of coordination.

Skatana returns to the mother ship to Prince Vekar's frustrations.

Vekar: “What are you doing back here? You could have destroyed the rangers and you didn't!”

Skatana reveals that despite his talent it took most of his efforts to defeat four of the rangers, and he wasn't sure that he had enough power left to defeat the blue ranger which is why he issued the duel challenge. By focussing his power on the blue ranger he can remove his biggest obstacle on the ranger's side, and clean up the rest afterwards. Prince Vekar approves.

Levira offers Skatana an advantage to guarantee his victory.

Jack spends the night training his swordplay while the rest of the rangers sleep, except for Natalia who is concerned about him. She watches him practice both single and dual blade styles with surprise.

The next day Jack morphs and leaves to meet Skatana. Natalia stands before him, also morphed, and hands Jack her rogue saber as a gesture of encouragement and belief in his skill. The two go together to meet Skatana.

Skatana calls foul that “Blue” didn't come alone and calls for Bruisers and X-Borgs to “keep the pink ranger busy”. Luckily the other rogues arrive and aid Natalia while Jack battles Skatana, but they don't interfere with the duel. When Skatana is losing to Jack's dual sword style he unleashes the advantage that Levira gave him; sword tipped tendrils that allow him to overwhelm Jack with attacks from multiple directions.

Big-C takes out his saber but instead of intruding he tosses it to Jack. Bianca and Dominic follow suit and the five sabers merge until Jack is wielding a three bladed saber and two bladed saber. The encouragement from his teammates pushes Jack to lock into the fight with a more clear head. With greater focus and multiple blades Jack destroys the bladed tendrils and finishes off Skatana with a 5-blade slash.

Skatana is enlarged and the rangers respond with their Megazord, using the Mystic Dragon power to put Skatana down for good.

Back at their hideout everyone apologised to Jack for getting caught up in the thrill of being rangers and not taking the continued occupation of Earth properly. Jack apologises too for letting his temper get the better of him. They all promise to do better from now on, taking things more seriously but not so much that they stress out.

Episode 4: Redemptions

On the armada flag ship, Prince Vekar is reprimanding the four returning commanders for their cowardice.

Cybax: “But Prince Vekar, there were five new red rangers like the ones from the archive footage that defeated the first invasion. Their teams were likely nearby and we would have been quickly destroyed,”

Vekar: “Those weren't the rangers from the past you imbecile! They were the new rangers transformed into the old rangers. There was no backup coming! You ran away for no reason!”

Skatana: “You saw them? Then, you must know who they are! We can hunt them down and bring them to you!”

Levira: “Unfortunately the surveillance drones that followed the commander were destroyed upon his defeat. If you hadn't fled when you did your drones may have seen the rangers identities revealed after the battle,”

Vekar has Damarus and Argus throw the four commanders in the brig. Levira convinces Vekar to give the commanders another chance to battle the rangers. Vekar agrees.

On Earth, the four commanders berate each other and split up to seek out the rangers rather than working together. Fueled with the knowledge that there is only a single ranger team and arrogance in their individual power, it becomes a contest of who will find and defeat the rangers first.

In their hideout, the rangers are inspecting the past red ranger keys, comparing the past ranger teams and finally starting to get along, though their debate on their favourite/the strongest teams causes heated debate.

Their light arguing is interrupted by a distant commotion caused by “Cyborgreef”. They morph and rush out to meet the cybernetic-coral-reef alien spewing fire blasts and causing distress to civilians. In the ensuing fight Cyborgreef pumps energy into the ground via one of his robotic tendrils and causes an explosion which separates the rangers as they are blasted away, surviving thanks to their ranger forms.

Big-C comes across a metal box among some debris and the Mystic Force red ranger key appears in his hand glowing. He uses the key to open the box and inside he finds the other four Mystic Force ranger keys.

Elsewhere the rest of the team has found each other and Cyborgreef soon finds them. Big-C arrives just in time for the fight to start. But before the rangers charge forward Big-C hands them the Mystic Force keys. They Form Change into the Mystic Force rangers and use the varied elemental magic attacks to overwhelm Cyborgreef, defeating him.

Levira enlarges Cyborgreef and the rangers call their Megazord. After the two titans clash the Mystic Force ranger keys float in the air and the rangers insert them into the control console. From the Megazord the Mystic Dragon is summoned who attacks Cyborgreef with fire before combining with the Megazord. The Megazord battles with greater power before defeating Cyborgreef with a magic binding spell that constricts and crushes the commander.

Back at the hideout Zarqa is delighted to see that the rangers have found a full set of keys.

Zarqa: “I have been seeking these lost powers since I arrived on earth. Through your actions the Mystic Force keys have been found and reconnected to the morphin grid. Use their power wisely. With effort and time the rest of the keys will be found, and the power rangers will be fully restored to this world. I am proud of you all.”

Episode 3: Seeing Red

Reveling in their first victory, the rangers are surprised when there are terrible consequences to their actions. Prince Vekar arrives and introduces himself to the world before stating that the rangers will be punished as will anyone caught aiding them. Stronger and more ruthless generals are sent to the earth's surface to seek out the rangers and intimidate people into giving up their identities.

The rangers respond immediately by morphing and going to fight the new enemies. But they are still not working as a team and split up to take on different generals. Arrogant in their ranger powers they are quickly defeated and retreat before they can be captured and their identities revealed. They escape to the hideout where they first met Zarqa and find him waiting for them.

Zarqa lectures the rangers on their behaviour;

Zarqa: “Your actions have brought harm to yourselves and shame on the image of the power rangers. You must act as a team not just your own safety, but the good of everyone that you are trying to save,”

Zarqa also recognises the unique individuality of each ranger and reveals a chest. Inside are keys like the rangers own, but these new keys are for all of the past red rangers that lost their powers in the first invasion.

Zarqa: “Use these to fight to your individual strengths, but do so together as a single unit. Then there will be no enemy you cannot overcome,”

Excited by the gift it is difficult for the rangers to stay calm and humble. They accept the keys and morph once more before going back out to re-challenge the generals they were defeated by. They find the first one and fight with awareness of each other. Once they have the hang of fighting alongside each other they break out the red ranger keys and perform a Form Change, becoming rangers with abilities and weapons that match them individually.

The other generals arrive in time to watch the defeat of their associate by five new rangers. They feel intimidated by the possibility of five more teams either nearby or on their way to back up their red rangers, and comically flee to Prince Vekar’s ship before the rangers revert to their original Rogue Ranger forms.

Vekar orders Levira to enlarge Tentacus to which the rangers respond by calling their Megazord and battling the enlarged enemy victoriously.

Episode 2: Revolution

1 year after the legendary war The Armada has taken over the earth. After 2 months of peace they arrived in force, expecting the opposition of power rangers but there were none. The takeover was swift and earth is now a labour planet for the armada. Gathering natural resources and working in factories to make the robots, weapons, and various other parts for the armada's space ships and robotic X-borgs.

In a deserted area a red ranger-like figure appears and looks around. He holds five multicoloured figures in his hands, and then sets off on his mysterious quest.

NEW CHARACTERS!

in order of appearance:

-Blue- Jack Miller. Trainee pilot before the second invasion. Now a lone wolf type he works the factories like most people and secretly practices swordsmanship in his own time every day to focus his frustrations.

-Pink- Natalia Beaumont. Heiress before the invasion. After her family lost the majority of their possessions she was put into basic servitude as she lacked the skills and physique for labor like most. She continues to try and carry herself with pride and decorum.

-Green- Dominic “Doc” Jones. A fraidy cat brainiac put to work in the engineering department. He is part of the repairs team for broken and malfunctioning X-Borgs and other equipment. He dreams of being brave and using his mind to help people rather than repair tools of destruction.

-Yellow- Bianca Lopez. Truck driver. She takes whatever she's told to haul by the armada from point A to point B. She is sassy and stubborn, taking guff from the armada only because she has to. Her hard exterior hides the sorrow this occupation has caused.

-Red- Christopher “Big-C” Evans. A loud mouth who is always refusing and talking back to X-Borgs and armada overseers, so he is regularly made an example of with typical punishments of flogging, stocks, and solitary confinement. He is actually helping the armada’s fear tactics rather than inspiring rebellion in people.

The red ranger figure secretly visits these five individuals and leaves them instructions for a meeting place.

Once the five have gathered, Zarqa appears and introduces himself. He is a being born of the Morphing Grid itself and is here to bring back the power rangers.

Zarqa: “This is a privilege and responsibility that I offer to each of you. For all people are suffering greatly and would wish the armada gone, I sense within each of you the unique spark that allows one to become a power ranger and achieve that goal.”

Zarqa presents the five with their Morphers and ranger keys.

Zarqa: “If you accept you must follow three basic rules or lose the protection of the power. First, never use your power for personal gain. Second, never escalate a battle unless you are forced to. And finally, keep your identity secret. No one may know you are a power ranger.”

Accepting the morphers, the five new rangers head outside to test their new powers. They happen upon an armada overseer with a patrol of X-Borgs harassing some children with their teacher, clearly enjoying their fear. Deciding that this is a good place to start, the rangers morph out of sight and call the attention of the overseer so that the civilians can sneak away and Big-C tries to make an inspiring introduction of the new ranger team.

Big-C: “We are those new Outstanding Outlaws, the Powered Pirates, Rambunctious Rebels. The… the… Power Rangers Rogue Storm!”

Unimpressed, the alien decides the noisy rangers need to be punished, so the rangers engage them in combat making short work of the alien bully and his entourage.

With the enemy defeated, Big-C gets a call on his Morpher. Zarqa tells him to input a code into his Morpher, which he does and summons the Galleon Zord. Following some kind of instinctual feeling the rangers board the ship and fly it to space to meet the armada ships, there they initiate the Megazord Transformation and destroy numerous enemy vessels in a flashy display of power.

Satisfied with their efforts they return to earth, unaware of a surviving ship transmitting the whole thing to a higher authority.

Episode 1: The Legendary Battle

The cosmic fury rangers along with Billy and Hekyl are enjoying a peaceful day after their final victory against Lord Zedd at the Master Captivator.

But the skies darken as ships arrive from space, firing lasers and dropping swathes of robot soldiers across the city and beyond.

The rangers morph and begin battling through the hordes of enemies but with little to no end in sight.

Amelia: “Who's attacking? Is Zedd back?”

Billy: “I don't think so, these guys look like robots like the Machine Empire.”

Javi: “Who is the machine empire?”

Billy: “An enemy I thought was defeated a long time ago.”

As the rangers continue their struggle against overwhelming numbers they are joined by other rangers.

Rocky: “Looks like you could use a hand.”

Billy: “Rocky! Nice to see you, man,”

The rest of the Mighty Morphin rangers join the fray: Red, Yellow, Black, and Pink.

Izzy: “We appreciate the help, but I don't think that four extra bodies will be enough,”

Kat: “Don't worry, Alpha put the word out,”

Cut to a montage of scenes from across the city (or multiple cities) as various already morphed ranger teams take on the robotic army forces.

Things look bleak as the ships in the sky are making things difficult for the rangers teams to fight against the ground forces. Luckily, the Astro Megaship arrives and engages the fleet with the assistance of the Mega Winger, and Delta Megaship.

The Alien Rangers and Galaxy Rangers are dropped off and join the battle while the Space Rangers continue their sky battle.

Dino Thunder Black breaks away from his team and meets up with the cosmic fury and mighty morphin team up.

Tommy: “Hey guys. Long time no see,”

Multiple: “Tommy!”

Tommy: “This is bad, whoever these guys are, they're everywhere. And I mean everywhere.”

In the background Tommy notices Dragon and White Tiger rangers.

Tommy: “Who are they, wearing my old colours?”

Bulk: “Can you believe it, Skull? We're actually Power Rangers!”

Skull: “I know! This is totally awesome. Watch this, I'm gonna do a back flip,”

Bulk: “Not now you numbskull, we're in the middle of a fight. We'll do plenty of back flips after we win, and everyone will love us as the heroes we are,”

Skull: “Good call. Dragon Strike!”

Bulk: “Saba Slash!”

Tommy: “That feels so wrong. But good for them,”

Billy: “Alpha and I were working on a way to use the White Tiger power to stabilise the Dragon power coin. Looks like Alpha got it finished, though I can't speak for his choice in rangers”

The conversation is interrupted by the Red Light speed ranger via an open communication channel.

Carter: “Sorry to butt in, but do we have an actual plan? There are 16 teams of rangers, but this is way worse than that thing on the moon.”

Zach: “Don't worry, my man Billy will figure something out.”

Billy: “I don't know. It's true that there hasn't been a battle so big or widespread before.”

Andros: “That's not quite true. When I tried to rescue Zordon the entire United Alliance of Evil was spread out far and wide fighting rangers and allies past and present. We won that fight because Zordon told me to break his containment tube and the positive energy released wiped out the armies and purified most of the leaders,”

Aiyon: “Great, but we don't have a tube of positive energy juice, do we?”

Billy: “No, but we do have a ranger army. When we morph a wave of morphin grid energy is released,”

Tommy: “I get what you're thinking, Billy. Let's get to it,”

All of the ranger teams coordinate and gather together in a large open area. Aware of the plan everyone briefly demorphs while there is a break in the fight. Then all together: “It's Morphin Time!”

The simultaneous morph causes a burst of energy that ripples out across the planet and surrounding space, destroying the robots on the ground and the ships in the air.

Everyone cheers in celebration until their ranger forms begin fading away, their Morphers broken or destroyed.

Fern: “What's going on?”

Billy: “I don't know. There must have been too much power concentrated in one place... If I'd have had time and equipment… I could have predicted and counted -,”

Jason: “It's okay, Billy. You did good,”

Zach: “There was no time to plan, man. This sucks, but we can always try and repair them, right?”

Kat: “And everyone is safe, that's what's important,”

Minh: “I haven't been a ranger for long, but I'm glad I got to save the world with you guys. Totally worth it.”

Tommy: “You did it, Billy. We all did it. And we wouldn't choose our powers over the safety of the earth.”

Everyone begins to return to their homes. The bittersweet victory hanging like a cloud.

Somewhere deep in space, a ship like the ones that attempted to invade earth receives a distress signal, video footage of the rangers battling the robot army, and the coordinates to earth.

Fade to black.

Plot Summary -

Super Megaforce is replaced by Rogue Storm and takes place after Cosmic Fury.

Inspired by a mix of Gokaiger, Gozyuger, and Forever Red.

The Armada invades earth and is fought off by the 13 ranger teams of earth and the 3 allied teams from space at the cost of their powers (like the Legendary War). But it turned out that that was only 1 battalion, so when another arrived the earth fell with no rangers to protect it.

1 year later a mysterious being appears on earth, a warrior dressed in all red who goes by Zarqa. He gathers five “Teenagers with Attitude” who are willing and able to courageously fight against The Armada. He gives them the Rogue Storm morphers and ranger keys. With this power the rangers take on their first Armada General and rescue some downtrodden citizens from abuse.

Zarqa leaves the rangers a chest which he refers to as the Key to Victory, and departs without explanation. Inside the chest are ranger keys of the 16 red rangers that took part in the legendary battle against the first invasion of The Armada.

Story progression summary -

The story follows these 5 teens as they wage “vigilante justice” against the armada, becoming labeled as Pirates for their guerilla tactics which is actually a result of their lack of a mentor and impulsive attitudes in the beginning of the story.

Along the way they use the 15 red ranger keys to strike at The Armada's forces with the variety of thematic powers the keys grant.

Over time more chests are found similar to the one that held the red ranger keys which said keys unlock and inside are the keys for the other 4 members of that team (3 in the case of Dino Thunder). The rogues discover that when all 5 of them are transformed into members of the same team they can use that team's finishing attack as well as grant their Megazord a special finishing attack too.

Soon they are met by a Silver Rogue who has the Time Force Quantum Ranger key and shares the other time force keys. He is from the future and has a message from Zarqa, that there are still more ranger powers from earth to be obtained, and he will return once they have been collected. With the revelation that there are “Sixth Ranger” keys, the team realise that there are even more chests to find, as they did not find these additional keys in the chests they found so far.

The silver ranger only has his Megazord's “ship mode” until the Mighty Morphin and Dino Thunder 6th ranger keys are found and unlock his Kaiju and True Megazord forms respectfully, unlike in Gokaiger and Super Megaforce where the silver r ranger has access to all three from the start.

Fantasy setting. High fantasy or low fantasy? Maybe low fantasy, it makes the villains more dangerous if they're a magical race (like demons) while the humans have little to no magic available, only their physical strength and weapons.

Modern time, or close to it. Power rangers are all modern or future settings. I like the aesthetic of He-Man, they have technologies in a medieval society, so it blends fantasy and sci-fi.

Traditional monarchy society. Regardless of the above decisions, this is non negotiable.

Story Beginning:

Allied kingdoms send their highly skilled and powerful princes to defeat a powerful demon lord style villain, very “heroes party” style.

It's because of a mixture of tradition and that boys are stronger than girls so for the absolute most dangerous missions only guys go. It's a biological fact, not misogyny. THERE'S NO AGENDA HERE! THE GARRISON HAS BOTH MEN AND WOMEN!

Anyway.

The princes don't return. Their sisters/betrothed princesses want to go rescue the princes but are forbidden, of course.

The allied kings and queens instead begin meeting to discuss war despite the expected loss of life to their kingdoms, which they were hoping to avoid by sending the princes as a tactical strike team to defeat the main villain directly.

The princesses decide to go out in secret and seek out a means to fight such powerful foes.

Enter the Morpers! Magical/technological devices that elevate the user's strength to a level beyond human capability. As is the power rangers way, the enhancement works like wearing power armour, the human is the driver and they are using the strength provided by the suit, rather than their own power. So it doesn't matter if it's a man or woman wielding a Morpher, they'd be equal in strength. So there's definitely no feminist agenda or misogyny here!

(Tell me when this joke gets old)

Where do the morphers come from? A sympathetic merlin style court wizard wishing to help the princesses? A magical blacksmith looking to road test his latest experimental creation? A witch in the woods channeling the magic of Lay Lines? The spirits of nature? God?

The princesses become Power Rangers and are just as strong if not stronger than the prodigy princes.

The princesses keep their identities secret and while their parents are distracted they set out on missions to protect kingdom settlements, destroy enemy fortifications, and discover what happened to the princes in hopes of rescuing them if they're still alive.

Some of, if not most of, the princesses service staff (hand maidens and teachers) are in on the secret and help to cover up the princesses activities, though not immediately. During their first few missions, the princesses are caught or seen by these individuals who are sympathetic and assist to keep the secret from the kings and queens who are quite distracted with war plans and such.

The story twists when the princes are found, mind controlled and in service of the villain.

Defeating them and returning them home brings them back to their senses.

After they recover they stand side by side with their princess counterparts, a 10 person strong team to fight the villain with twice the number and three times the power that they had before.

Power Rangers Dragon Heart(ed)

The team aesthetic is Dragons. Their power is derived from dragons which is why they have beyond human strength (and negating gender dimorphism).

They get dragon scale suits, their helmet visors have dragon teeth around the rim (similar to tyrannosaurus rangers and some other dinosaur and dragon themed rangers), their weapons have dragon wing design aesthetics such as the handguard of a sword being shaped like a pair of dragon wings and the body of a bow being a pair of dragon wings with a handle in the center, and dragon claw design aesthetics such as daggers with blades that look like talons.

The power is actually from a legendary multi headed chromatic dragon: Red, Blue, Green, Black, White. This dragon was defeated “ages ago” by mysterious Red Knights from another world. This isn't revealed immediately though, not until the princesses summon their megazord for the first time and it is the evil dragon which they subsequently must defeat and tame with fighting and a magic ritual. After the effigy of the dragon is tamed it splits into 5 separate dragons, which can be combined into a draconic version of Voltron 😂

Or maybe something more like the original dino-megazord, so 1 dragon as the body, 2 as the legs, 1 splits to become arms (a dragon head arm and a drill tail arm), and the last one breaks up into armour pieces and/or becomes the head.

The red warriors were retired power rangers returning for a “Red Forever” team up when a king of the past sent out a magical call for aid that crossed dimensions.

Another plot twist is that while the rangers were in this world, villains in their world attacked and won, and now they're the demons that are invading this world.

The actions of the princesses, and later the princes as well, bring the boss demon to this world where he is defeated which subsequently frees both worlds of his tyranny.

There are 4 more digi-eggs in the Wonderswan game “Tag Tamers”: Darkness, Desire, Guts, Vanity.

Ignore Guts because that's the same as Courage.

Darkness, Desire, and Vanity, could also have crests and evil digidestined to wield them. Darkness opposes Light and Hope. Vanity opposes Reliability and Sincerity. Desire opposes Love and Kindness. These Antithesis Crests could have an almost “elemental advantage” over their opposed crests.

Rename Guts to Arrogance? Arrogance opposes Courage and Friendship?

Plus there are 7 crowns of Sin which are wielded by Digimon. These Digimon could “recruit” 4 evil digiDestined, evening the numbers.

Following a similar progression of S1, not all of the digiDestined arrive in the digital world at the same time. The bearer of light is not there, and their crest and egg are in the possession of the antagonists as per the original story, with the expansion that they are copied to create the crest and egg of darkness.

Evander stood dumbfounded as the classmen and teachers of the magic academy looked between him and the witch-knight. "Why me Sir Gabri?" He stammered.

Matilda Gabri stood around seven feet tall with her armour, and an inch or two taller with her helmet on. "You do not wish to join the Witch-Knights?" She asked.

"Oh, I never really thought about it. I'm not a fighter, I joined the academy to study healing magic and medicines," Evander replied, very aware that already being five foot six inches he looked even smaller when stood next to sir gabri.

"That is why I give you this invitation," Matilda then moved to address the room, "Listen well everyone. The Witch-Knights are the most powerful users of magic and the strongest warriors in the land. But we are not invincible, and for all our power we are typically deployed in response to a threat rather than to avert one. So while we prevent more people from coming to harm we can do little to help those already affected." She then turned back to Evander, "You are the balance that our order requires. You claim to not be a fighter, but you have taken to learning the Zhaojia fighting style, have you not?"

"Combat practice is required by the curriculum even at this magic school. The Zhaojia style teaches deflection and parry rather than kicks and punches." Evander's face turned red as he explained his choices.

"That's precisely why you stand out to me. You can protect yourself without engaging directly in dangerous combat, and you can heal yourself and others, a skill that is sorely lacking in our current ranks." Matilda places her large gauntleted hand on Evander's shoulder as she spoke. Suddenly, Evander didn't feel silly in his choices anymore. Going against the status quo didn't have to be a source of angst or self loathing. Nervously he looked Matilda in the eye and said "I accept your invitation to join the Witch-Knights,"

Fabian wiped the sweat from his brow as he looked down at the fruits of his labour. The blade forged from a metal he recovered from a fallen star retained its red/white glow even after he cooled it in water. The unique metal had a fiery sheen when it reflected sunlight.

Next Fabian affixed the blade to a simple hilt that the forge master wouldn't miss. Now that it was complete, Fabian looked around to make sure that he was alone before taking a few practice swings, imagining himself on some battlefield felling enemy soldiers or monsters. Fabian put extra effort into the final swing, pretending it to be the death blow, and as he did the blade glowed brighter and he felt like it struck something though he had swung through open air. A moment later a cut in the empty space appeared before him and it widened into a circle. Fabian stared at the perfectly flat black disk before him and then poked at it with the tip of his sword. A thick clawed arm protruded from the disk and lashes out causing Fabian to fall back and cry out in fear.

Out from the circle climbed a bipedal grey skinned creature with four arms ending in clawed hands, a long face like a horse but with a maw full of sharp teeth, and a mane of writhing tentacles starting at the head and running down to the middle of its back.

You're a psionic who has just been forcefully enrolled in a magic academy because someone saw you using telekinesis. Now you need to pass all the magic classes in order to be considered proficient enough at magic you won't accidentally kill civilians.

"Welcome, welcome to Magia Mundus academy. A bit of a late bloomer, aren't you? Well that doesn't matter one bit. What matters is you found your magical potential and you're here to explore its capabilities," the excitable elderly man greeted Violet with the biggest smile and a handshake that jostled her.

"Er- thank you. Yes, I'm just as surprised as everyone to find out I have magic," Violet lied. She wasn't magic at all but no one would believe that, given her ability to move objects with her mind. She had kept her powers secret for fear of how they would be received, but after being seen using them she was now being forced to attend this magic school. If she passed the courses on magical knowledge and safety then she'd receive a licence and be allowed to use her powers in public. But if she failed she'd never be allowed to use them again.

"I'm professor Archibald, tenured teacher at this school and here on behalf of the headmaster to greet you and show you around,"

Violet was led by Prof. Archibald on the scenic route of the school, passing by the various classrooms, the grounds, stables, greenhouses, assembly hall, and lastly the student communal areas which were connected to the accommodations for live-in students. Violet was thankful that she was local and she would be able to sleep in her own bed every night.

"Here is the weekly schedule, you are free to choose extracurricular courses but must follow the core ones: Biological Magic, which affects living matter such as plants and is used for healing wounds. Defensive Magic, which covers wards and shields as well as teaching you the correct way to fight back should you have to, magic is a wonderful tool but if used in anger it produces terrible results. Manipulation Magic which covers moving and using objects and tools without directly touching them, trust me it takes a lot of practice to use tools without using your hands. And lastly, Transformation Magic, many an accident has occurred from young mages attempting to alter their appearance or become another creature, so we thought it necessary for learners own safety. Well that's all from me, do you have any questions?"

"Well, I was wondering what would happen if I can't do some of the kinds of magic? If I can do Manipulation Magic for example, but I can't do Transformation Magic?" Violet was suddenly nervous about these essential courses that she wouldn't be able to pull off with telekinesis alone.

"Not to worry, the criteria to obtain a magic licence is coursework and exam based. There is a practical test as well but if you lack the aptitude you can still get a magic licence so long as the written work is up to standard. It proves that while you cannot use that magic now, should you become able to later you are knowledgeable enough to use it correctly."

This brought a strong feeling of relief to Violet.
