So ideally I’d like to gather all official merch on this blog. These are some of the rare posters I’ve seen looking around trying to find the promo one I just bought . The third one is a cutting from an old magazine (likely a Nintendo Power). The Japanese poster would be like a holy grail at this point, if it even exists anymore
I have acquired some ridiculous rarity Xardion Asmik Corp of America poster (paid a pretty penny to get it parted from a SNES lot). I’ll try to get a better photo eventually of it. But it’s going in a frame. Btw the Xardion tumblr is not dead! It lives on & I will continue to add fanart & other official merch I find
“Aquatan Battle Commander”
Alcedes’ mecha came from Aquata, the water planet. Interesting to explore what the Aquatans could look like. The JP canon mentioned (well, if I interpreted correctly) that the inhabitants of this world had superior magical ability. Combined with the ocean motif, there’s a lot of cool possibilities for bringing back the “huge shoulder pads” look of 80′s anime, in clothing/armor designs that both at once feature organic lines, and imply high technology. Mmm, yes, interesting.
Human anatomy study for possible Triton concept. After a hiatus, the “Xardion Reborn” journey continues! Been learning and growing a lot as an artist, so some things are going to be redone.
“Harvester”
Hostile alien lifeform whose anatomy was inspired by the last level of XARDION: The living interior of NGC-1611. (Check out @xardion for a cool sample of official concept art of the final level - here’s a link to that post)
“Salamander Suit - Doodles”
Interesting tidbit 1: In the JP canon, the character we know as “Triton” is actually named “Salamander.” I thought for my artbook it’d be cool to make “Triton” the actual name of the soldier/pilot, and “Salamander” the name of the armored suit.
Speaking of armored suits: The original game features the kind of big anime-style mecha we all know and love. However, for my re-conceptualization of the story, I’m thinking of something more realistic (harder? sci-fi). That leaves me with two options: Larger mech-like suits (Titanfall, Hulkbuster, VOTOMS), or smaller powered armor (Halo, Edge of Tomorrow, Metroid). In the end, I’m choosing the latter. Quite a radical departure from the original concept, but I hope the look and feel won’t be unrecognizable! :)
Interesting tidbit 2: Also in the JP canon, the mecha were transformable. So in this doodle, I experiment with what it’d be like for a human-sized machine to “transform”, albeit just a little bit. Haha.
“Alcedes/Triton Confusion”
Some friends and I were researching the original XARDION story online, and thought there isn’t much, what is shared online is pretty significant. It looks like the US canon changed some crucial details regarding the identity of the robots.
From what we were able to gather (and translate, when it came to the JP canon):
- “Alcedes” is directly translated from “Alseides,” the red robot. - The red robot is actually from Oceansphere (hence its lobster-like appearance) - The white robot was originally called “Salamander” in the JP canon, but renamed to “Triton” in the US canon and switched with Alcedes in terms of origin. - (my opinion/hunch) The US story might have done this to help players avoid confusion (e.g. why would the red robot come from the water planet, and the white robot come from the red desert planet?)
As a result, I thought of this interesting twist for Xardion: Reborn - due to the results of some kind of pilot mental sync test, the pilots of the two robots actually had to switch. So Alcedes is actually a young Fieran girl who is piloting the Aquatan robot (which I designated as “Undine” - this wasn’t in the canon), and Triton is the older man, the jaded, cynical warrior, who pilots the Fieran robot (what the JP story calls “Salamander”).
I thought this would be a cool way to acknowledge both the JP and US stories, and even create some real tension between Fiera and Oceansphere (after all, one might ask why this switch had to happen? It couldn’t be because they both wanted an excuse to have an intimate, close look at each others’ technology, right? ;)

Here are some creature concepts for that weird octopus-like creature from XARDION (1992, SNES), which you can find at the bottom of the 2nd level.
One question that faces me as I continue working on this artwork for “XARDION: Reborn” is, how to make the actual alien invaders from NGC-1611 look even more foreign and alien-y and nasty than creatures like this octopus-like monster which guards the First Treasure in the game… because this octopus guy is an enemy, but I don’t think he’s an actual part of the NGC-1611 invasion (i.e. not affiliated). Thus, it wouldn’t make sense if its anatomy looked like the invaders’…
I think the key way to handle this is to base this Aquatan (Oceansphere) lifeform off real-Earth marine life, like actual octopi. That way, we will immediately feel some sense of familiarity when we see it. Then, monsters/aliens from NGC-1611 can simply look even “more” foreign, establishing a different look and feel.
So far, I’m inclined towards moving forward with the first concept (farthest upper left).

“Aquatan Destroyer”
Aquata’s scientific elite designed this juggernaut of a warship to singlehandedly annihilate enemy naval fleets without support or resupply. They were inspired by several of their enemy worlds’ land animals, combining several of their aesthetic features to mock these bitter foes.
