KHAIR SÖNMEZ
Khair resisted the urge to kiss him. It’d been so long since someone had made her feel beautiful. Not told her—- made her. Listening to Xavier, his lips close enough to touch and the heat of his body electrifying her skin, it was all she could do to keep her hands to herself. But it was so hard, so hard when he was looking at her like that. Of all the men in the world, Xavier was perhaps the only one who could make her feel anything good. It was a dismaying thought, but one she didn’t fight off. He made her feel seen—- like she was a person with thoughts, emotions, and something to offer. Someone who mattered. Daniel had never made her feel like that. He’d made her feel pretty and wanted and valuable, but not alive. For years, she’d felt somewhere between a person and a portrait, spending an inordinate amount of time wondering if she was even real at all. Xavier validated her existence, his sincerity tapping into her primal need for acceptance. Her hardened, inky exterior was nothing, but a suit of armor. The insecurities that riddled her body still howled, welded inside for fear of being weaponized. Khair was a strong, intense woman but she’d been bleeding out for a long time. Slowly, quietly, and surely. However, for those few seconds that he spoke, assuring her that she was more than a coat hanger, he’d stopped the oozing like a piece of gauze over a deep cut. So, if they’d been in another place, having another conversation, she would’ve pressed roseate lips against his because as articulate as she was, the knot in her throat prevented her from speaking.
Unfortunately, as Xavier continued, want soon turned to confusion as her eyebrows knitted together. What he was saying sounded completely insane. She wasn’t sure she’d believe it if it was coming from anyone but him. After all, the wealthy taking out hits, a drug scandal, threats, and murder—- it was something straight out of a Scorsese movie. Yet, watching his expression contort with emotion, Khair found she believed every impossible word he spoke. For a moment, she felt an intense need to protect him from the world—- to save him from any drop of pain or harm that could come his way. The thing about Khair was that her difficulty to open her heart meant that her love for those who weaseled their way in was practically limitless. A heart shielded in ice was bound to care too much. It was why Daniel had wielded such power over her—- Khair didn’t care often but she did care hard. Perhaps to the point of martyrdom. Such was her cross to bear. Thus, as he poured his secrets onto the counter of the bar—- warning her of the demons which plagued him—- she wished for the power to take it all away. In the end, it didn’t matter if he had the whole world after him. Khair wouldn’t leave his side. She owed it to him and she owed it to Holly. The abyss they were looking into was a harrowing one. There was no guarantee they’d reach the end they wanted or even live to tell it, him especially. But the gun was already loaded, it was simply a matter of pulling the trigger. If she walked away, Khair would spend a lifetime regretting it. In the days following Holly’s death, she’d promised her ghost she’d take care of Xavier, make sure he was alright in whatever form that may be. It was an oath that’d been something of an apology for the betrayal of desiring him. She liked to think that through the past few years she’d done well to keep that vow. At least she hoped so. There’d been some missteps, but she’d tried. Khair had spent what felt like a lifetime double-crossing her friend even if she hadn’t suspected it. Now, she’d spend a lifetime trying to right it by helping and protecting the one thing Holly loved most in the world—- Xavier.
Hands reached out slowly, fingers twitching with indescribable emotion as she cupped his face. “If you think you can scare me off that easily,” Khair began, thumb lightly stroking his cheek. “I’m afraid you’re going to be sorely disappointed. I didn’t stick with you all these years to walk away now and it’s gonna take a lot more than murderers with money to send me running for the hills. You’re all I’ve got left and Holly was my best friend. I won’t let you face the wolves on your own. I’m with you ‘til the end, Xavier.” A soft smile tugged at the corner of her lips. “Besides—- need I remind you I’m really good at righting wrongs.” Khair held his gaze as she withdrew her hold. “Although, just so we’re clear, I’ll be holding you to that offer. When this is all said and done and you’ve got your license, I expect an epic treatment center.” She lifted her drink and took a sip, forcing the liquid down her throat. Everything he’d said weighed heavy on her heart and she wouldn’t lie and say that a sense of fear wasn’t a part of the equation. Taking down an ex-husband was child’s play in comparison to going after a murderous syndicate. Yet, she wouldn’t back down, not only because Xavier deserved to see it through, but because Holly did. Holly, of everyone involved, had paid the biggest price. She merited justice. “So,” she sighed. “What’s your plan? We’ve got a powerful New York boss, his executioners, drugs, and Holly. Who, by the way, loved you far too much to even think about cheating. I may have struck out with Daniel, but you were Holly’s whole heart. She looked at you the way I wished Daniel would look at me and who could blame her. Plus, someone’s got to look after you, right?”
~
When her hands cup his stubbly cheeks, Xavier feels his eyes close. Her touch is not unlike a living daydream. It was next to impossible to believe it was even real. Or that, she was. The promises she spoke, the reassurances she gave, he knew with full certainty she meant every word. Just as he did when he told her, she had him to lean on. It was crazy to think that Holly brought them together. Once in life and twice in death. “My plan?” He told her. Truth be told, he didn’t have a plan. Or if he did, he was blanking on one at the moment. With her so close, it was hard to focus on anything else. Their surroundings, the bar, the new screeching sounds of someone performing ‘Eye of The Tiger.’ Funny how, he felt like a tiger in the moment. Like some uncaged animal. To most people, it always seemed like he shut them out. To some extent he did. But, he also shut himself in. Barricaded every window and door. Especially around her. It was the only way he knew how to curb the temptations and keep them from overflowing. Yet, Xavier didn’t know why he was still trying so hard to keep that up. Holly was gone. And deep down, he knew she would’ve wanted him to move on. Maybe not with her best friend but, who else could she trust to take great care of him? Ensure he doesn’t fall so far off the cliff he can’t later crawl back up. Khair was his light, and really the only gentle reprieve he’d have at the end of every upcoming bloodbath.
The declivity into hell would be swift, and so Xavier knew he oughta enjoy his little slice of heaven while it lasts. Which if it isn’t already obvious... that slice of heaven consists solely of her. Those lips. That heart. He reached for both when craning his neck to capture her mouth in a heated kiss. Their first one ever. Khair was so soft, so luxuriously smooth, that even her mouth tasted rich. The bar around them was still, despite the obvious noise. Xavier’s main focus had been on tasting Khair and in extension: feeling her. His hands cupping her waist, hauled her forward with an impatient, silent tug. Letting her chest crash against his front. He was sure she’d be able to feel how excited he was through his groin pressed tightly against her. He had no desire to let her go and yet, he could only hold his breath for so long before he needed air. His mouth, still savoring the taste of her, soon finds her ear while his nose brushes the velvety lift of her cheek. “My plan,” he breathes into her ear “is... to take you home now. What do you say, you wanna get out of here?” Leaning back, Xavier searches her face for an immediate answer. But instead, comes to find himself distracted by her beauty. It could knock him the fuck out.
MARGOT HUGHES
After dumping her only serious boyfriend over a decade ago to pursue her dream, only for said dreams to burst into flames in less than a year. She could’ve tried to fix what she had broken with Stratton, but she saw instead her miserable failures as some kind of karmic justice for what she’d put him through and saved what was left of her dignity by staying far away from him. Romance just didn’t seem to be in the cards for her after that. There were a few hookups here and there with long dry spells in between each of them. A few days ago, one of said dry spells had ended when she ran into Xavier had a bar, more than a little tipsy. One thing led to another and, well, the rest was history. The usual guys she picked were from out of town, people she’d never have to see again to avoid the awkward small talk that might ensue, but it looked like she might have fucked up her one rule this time. “Woah, not only do you remember me, but you remember my name? Consider me surprised,” she said with a chuckle. Pink rushed to her cheek at his very suggestive comment. This was exactly why she picked guys she’d never see again. “Should I? Guess it wasn’t that memorable.” Playing coy seemed like the way to go despite there not being anything coy about their previous meeting. Not to mention she did recall something about biting. “Didn’t think I’d see you again, to be honest.”
~
“Ouch.” His twisted display of hurt is more so for her amusement than his. He’s not bothered, or so he wouldn’t be if she didn’t remember him. He barely knows Margot, aside from what sounds she makes in bed. And while in some cases, many would argue that means he knows her pretty well, or more intimately than others, to him: it’s not the same story. “Didn’t think or was hoping?” He wouldn’t be offended either way. It’s not like he expected to sleep with Margot and then build a friendship with her afterwards. She was an itch he needed to scratch and from what he could recall of their minor tussle between the sheets, she scratched it very well. “I only ask because I’m deciding now how I should play this. Coy, like you? Or more straightforward. We could always pretend it never happened, if that makes you feel more comfortable. Although, I have a great memory so that might be a little challenging for me.”
Khair Sönmez
Khair glanced at her drink. What Xavier had gone through was horrific by all accounts. When she’d first heard the news, she’d been left dumbfounded. She could not nor would not believe it. Anyone who knew him knew that Xavier had loved Holly and would sooner cut off his own arm than harm a hair on her head. Thus, she was sure without a shadow of a doubt that Xavier was innocent; her only regret being that perhaps she hadn’t been there enough. The turmoil of her marriage and disorder had considerably cut her ability to support him. Attraction aside, Xavier mattered to her and more importantly, so did Holly. Khair wasn’t always a good friend—- good friends didn’t desire the other’s boyfriend—- but she’d cared. A lot. “Maybe it’s time you get a lawyer and sue them for all they got. I think being falsly imprisoned for three years is more than enough to get you some sort of reparation and I know some attorneys in New York who would salivate at the mouth for an opportunity like that.” The brunette was well-aware that not everyone was as into vengeance as she was. She’d readily admit that she had a special palate for retaliation. However, that didn’t mean it wasn’t warranted. If it’d been her, she’d have painted the town red with retribution. Besides, in the case of Xavier, she’d venture to say it was less so revenge and more so justice. “I mean, I don’t know how you’re taking it so well. I would’ve been out for blood ages ago.” For a moment, she regretted asking him the question. While she couldn’t tell if the emotion on his face was exhaustion or stress, she knew better than to pry. His reasons for asking to meet didn’t really matter, anyway. She was only glad he had. Magnolia was a good place, but there weren’t many people she knew. It was hard to make friends when you had to travel out of the city every few weeks, sometimes for months at a time when fashion season came around. Yet even before then, Xavier, Holly, and her husband had been the only people she could truly count on and out of the three, only Xavier remained. It weighed on her sometimes although she’d never say it. After all, loneliness was a hard pill to swallow when you’d convinced yourself you were better off alone. “That makes two of us then. For what it’s worth, I’m happy you did,” she admitted. “As for modeling, it’s going as well as I could hope. Still getting booked which is good, but I have a feeling my time’s running out. I’m almost 30 and most girls on the runway are in their teens and early twenties. It’s only a matter of time before I’m too old, fat, ugly—- whatever excuse they give me. They’ll figure out a way to wave me out the door soon enough. Kind of scares me if I’m honest, though. I don’t really know what I’m gonna do after. It’s all I’ve known since I was 14. I’m starting to think I should’ve finished college.” Khair knew Xavier had flipped the conversation on her in an effort to divert it away from him. He hadn’t been that slick about it and she’d indulged the silent request, allowing him a moment of reprieve. They were in the same boat in a way. Two lost souls doing their best to keep their heads above the water. It was the sort of connection she’d missed all these years. Xavier could understand and talking to him came easily. She could shed her guard with no fear. “I was thinking maybe I could start a treatment center here in Magnolia, courtesy of Daniel’s wallet.” Something he’d hate. “But I don’t know. It’s a lot of work…” she trailed off. “What about you? You got any big plans lined up now that you’re in town? Surely there’s something you want to do—- something fun.”
~
“I don’t want reparation.” It was a clipped response and he didn’t intend for it to sound as terse as it did. Truthfully, he appreciates her concern. There weren’t many people in his life who would go to bat for him the way she would or who at the very least, would give him the time of day. Honestly, he didn’t even know why Khair bothered with someone like him. It was no secret she was beautiful, talented, and worldly. Many would say she was way out of his league and Xavier couldn’t disagree. That didn’t stop him from craving her all the same though. Most of the time, it only made him crave her more. She was a forbidden fruit in his garden of Eden. The desire to have her was always present and never waning and yet, Xavier stopped himself from acting on it. Even now. Because maybe he wanted her to know who she was getting herself involved with first. Being associated with him wasn’t a bright idea. In each other’s absence, his world had grown incredibly darker. He hasn’t seen a flicker of light pass him by until the moment she walked through that door. She was definitely a beacon of light right now and he desperately wanted to return its gesture but first, he allowed her the chance to speak. To tell him everything he missed in her life. On the off chance, he decided last minute to spare her of his demons.
“First of all,” he cut in, after polishing off the rest of his drink and settling the nerves in his stomach. He leaned in to chase the smell of her perfume and found himself just mere inches from her lips. There was no hiding his body’s natural reaction to focusing on her mouth. It’s quite clear watching her speak where his desires lay and what precisely has him so aroused at the moment. But, even if it’s not obvious... he licks his lips to show her, while eying her carefully. “You’re beautiful. So, any of those arguments are invalid and a total load of bullshit. Second, I’m pretty sure even these teens and young twenty year olds don’t hold a torch to you. So, honestly? Let the bastards replace you. You’re better off without them anyway. Just as you’re better off without that little twat you used to call a husband. I’ve met a lot of stupid people in my life Khair, but believe me Daniel takes the fucking cake.” If he sounds jealous, it’s because he is. Despite having no reason to be because Daniel was no longer in the picture. And thank the fuckin’ lord for that. “Maybe,” he continues offhandedly about the treatment center being a lot of work, while maneuvering above his stool to dig a cigarette out from his pocket. He flicks his lighter open and lights it up, respectfully turning his head so he doesn’t have to blow a ring of smoke directly in her face. Afterwards, his gaze finds hers again. “But, if anyone can pull off it’s you. Besides, I’m willing to help you out if you need it. Because, my job isn’t remotely as glamorous as yours. I’ve been spending a majority of my time around the auto body shop. It’s the only place that would hire me after everything, believe it or not. My rap sheet’s not exactly the squeakiest and they don’t really give a fuck if you were framed for murder or you actually committed one so long as you can fix a damn engine. It’s alright, I guess. Not my passion but I’m good at it. Aside from that, since you asked, I’m getting my architecture’s license so, if you’re serious about starting a treatment center, you and I could work well together. We could even mix business with pleasure.” His lips curl at the corners in a tantalizing manner. He’s teasing her but, he’s also being dead serious too. Then pangs of guilt surface and his sexy smile is gone, replaced by a plethora of other thoughts.
He taps the butt of his cigarette against an ashtray laying out on the bar, then takes another long drag and turns inquisitive eyes over to her. She mentioned something earlier about how she didn’t know how he was managing his situation so well. Truth was? He wasn’t. And after circling back to a previous thought he had, in regards to him wanting her to know who he was now, he decided to share some personal information with her that he’s been gathering on his own ever since their time apart. Information that, he’s been wracking his brain trying to make sense of for months but there’s still a ton of pieces missing. “There’s something I should tell you before we get into that though. Something I’ve been meaning to tell you for awhile now but, was waiting until the right time came up or more pieces fit. But, none of them do.” He pauses to take a deep breath, not intentionally dragging out the suspense. “As pissed as I am about the way things unfolded, prison was sort of eye opening for me. Anything we ever wanted to know about Holly or the dark underbelly of New York, those guys knew all about. I shared a little of my case with one. Before I got out, he told me about this syndicate of narcos in the city. I mean fuck, I always knew New York City was crawling with rats but these guys are really heavy. What I couldn’t figure out though, was why they came after Holly? She might’ve snorted some coke here and there, or every once in awhile when we’d go out but she wasn’t hittin’ it hard. Then I thought, I don’t know, maybe she was hooking up with a dealer or something behind my back? I can’t confirm that’s true, although I highly doubt it. I think I would’ve known. She always had a terrible pokerface. Couldn’t lie for shit. Anyway, these questions have eaten away at me for years. The cops now, are so convinced there’s more to the story but, they won’t tell me what they know unless I agree to help them and I’m not doing that. I don’t trust them and quite frankly, if they did their job right the first time, this case would’ve been closed by now. Instead, it follows me around like a fuckin shadow everywhere I go.”
He took another breather to run his fingers through his dark, messy waves. “The past two years, I’ve gathered three things, Khair. One: this shit was related to drugs. Two: someone issued a hit on Holly. And three: this person is very high profile. Enough that, he gets to live his life like a king while his hands never get dirty because he’s got people on his roster to do the dirty job for him. And it’s only a matter of time before all hell breaks loose. I’m not stupid enough to think that my getting out means I’m scotch free. She was my girlfriend, was carrying my child. Whatever happened to her, there’s loose ends that need tying up. I’m one of those loose ends.” That realization alone causes a tightness in his chest. Mostly because now more than ever, he doesn’t want to let Khair go. In a way, he’d just gotten her back. Yet, once again, he couldn’t drag her into a mess she had no reason, much less desire to be a part of. Unlike him, she has the choice to walk away. And if that’s what she decided to do, he couldn’t even fault her for that. “All in all, I’m glad you came tonight. Because these days, I don’t know which one of them will be my last. I have to constantly look over my shoulder. Filter out any threats. Yet, I don’t even know what they look like. I haven’t figured out their names, I don’t know what they want. Other than to make sure whatever Holly knew, doesn’t come back to haunt them. So look, I guess I’m telling you this so you can decide if you want to stick around with me. You’ve been through hell and back and I’m not Daniel. I’d never put you through that. Because unlike him, I actually know your worth and I know for a damn fact, I can’t afford you.” He shrugs. “I can sit here and pretend seeing you doesn’t drudge up more shit but it does.” Feelings more specifically.

Believe it or not, Xavier didn’t make a habit out of sleeping with random girls, not in his thirties. He’d had his fair share of hook ups in the past but, these days he devoted his time and attention to more goal-oriented things. Whether that was getting revenge on his dead girlfriend’s behalf, working on his architecture’s license, or fulfilling an almost 12 hour day at the auto body shop. What occurred with Margot was a fleeting thing. It was fun and it helped curb the demons in his head for a little while. He never expected to run into her again afterwards though, despite Magnolia being somewhat of a small town. He wasn’t ashamed of what happened and knew that even if he had run into her, like he did right now, he’d say hello. He was only a dick to those who deserved it. And she didn’t qualify. “It was Margot, right?” He was only asking to be sure, not because he’d forgotten her. He might’ve been drunk but he wasn’t that drunk. “Don’t worry, I don’t bite. Not usually anyway. But, you already know that.” The suggestive look in his eyes referenced all that it needed to in order to get his point across.

If there was one thing Xavier loved about Magnolia Springs, it was being close to Jacob again and now his, spunky grandma. The old bat was a hoot, and practically a bonfire of light. One of the sweetest people Xavier’s ever had the privilege of knowing. On days like today, when the hours felt long and the stress felt even longer, Xavier sought out the Tanners farm for some peaceful reprieve. No matter the hour, or the day, Jacob’s grandmother always welcomed him in with open arms and because she was so sweet, Xavier always made it a habit to bring her a gift every time he visited. Her presents usually varied but always consisted of treats, flowers, or something else she showed interest in. If she mentioned a book she hadn’t read yet, he bought it. Or if she talked about some gadget she saw on the TV that was cool, he picked it up for her. By now, he felt like a part of the family and would often joke around with Jacob that he was the new favorite grandson, out to steal his grandma. This usually earned him a punch to the shoulder or a quirk rebuttal, to which made his jests all the more worth it. Even now. “I think she finally passed out on the couch, brother.” With Grandma Tanner safely snoozing away, Xavier plopped down on the front porch step beside Jacob and produced two bottles of cold beers in his hand. He offered one out to his friend and then tapped the neck to Jacob’s in a silent toast before taking a much needed sip. “Whatchu been up to these days? I feel like I haven’t seen you in a minute. You good?”

Khair Sönmez
Years—- it’d been years since she’d last seen Xavier. Not many, granted, but enough to have seen a change. Beasts of wicked nations held no mercy and both Xavier and Khair had felt the violent, coruscating end of an era. It’d clanged shut with the door of a prison cell and a slip into the abyss. The brunette, while arguably winning her battles, had mutated. Hexed herself with vengeance and slinked into the darkness without a kiss goodbye. After all, there was comfort in the shadows. Black souls blended into the night and that meant you didn’t have to be seen. Stepping into the bar, Khair felt a familiar flutter in her stomach. Was it nerves? Or was it something else? Because Xavier hadn’t merely been a friend. He’d been her friend’s boyfriend—- her dead friend’s boyfriend. And she’d wanted him. The diamond on her finger had done little to stop the lingering gazes and silent touches. Back then, it’d been exciting, tantalizing even. They’d never acted on it, of course, with the immorality outweighing the temptation (maybe more on his end than hers). But there’d been nights when her husband worked too late and Khair lay in bed, thoughts drifting to Xavier over the former. He represented something, she supposed. Risk, passion, carnal desire; forbidden fruit. Hence as his silhouette came into view, it was as if she’d stepped into a chapter of the past, one that had never quite seen a close. Dark eyes smoldered with contentment as his gaze found her way towards her. Khair grinned. Reaching him, her hand rested on his shoulder, leaning into the greeting as Xavier’s scent wafted around her, envelopping her like a long lost friend. He smelled the same. Dropping her arm, she was almost sorry when he moved away. “Well, don’t break my heart,” she countered. “Three years is hardly enough time to lose your faith in me. Although if I’d known about the karaoke, I might’ve taken my chances with a raincheck.” Khair slid into the seat beside him. “I gotta admit I was surprised to see your name light up my phone. Magnolia’s a long way from New York and its many circus acts.” She didn’t bother asking how he’d been—- anyone who knew his past could guess. “What sent you calling up ghosts?”
“You’re right. I’ll save my lack of faith for the pigs who won’t stop blowing up my phone.” He’s referring to the NYPD’s pathetic excuse of a law enforcement agency, the many lawyers who were only after his money and never the justice sought on his dead girlfriend’s behalf. He loved Holly, he really did. And if she was still alive, he could’ve potentially seen himself getting down on one knee one day, asking her beautiful self to marry him. Not because she was carrying his child at the time but because they simply got along. She was his rock during a lot of hardships and was an all around vibrant person to be with. She could make anyone laugh. She had her flaws too though, and just like any couple they fought. Sometimes when the arguments got too heated and Khair was in town, she’d escape the wreckage and head over to the brunette’s place to unburden hers and Xavier’s relationship drama. There was a lot about him that Khair knew, even if he didn’t know she did and there was even less she didn’t know. He always found her very easy to talk to and therefore, he told her many things. Admittedly there was always an instant attraction between them. One he tried very desperately to ignore because although there was the temptation, he was an extremely loyal guy. He never cheated, never strayed. Not unless you considered thinking of Khair in rare moments, even during his relationship with Holly, as cheating. Her smile, olive-like skin, and dark hair. He envisioned running his hands through it, even now. But instead picked up his drink and took another gulp. “I guess, I don’t know?” he paused, swiped a hand down over his face and silently urged himself to pull it together. He couldn’t allow himself to break in the presence of another. Even Khair who he knew wouldn’t judge him but, appearing weak or vulnerable was not a form of candidness he usually opted for. Truth was, he’d been spending a lot of time lately digging up graves and preparing new ones for his enemies. It’s left him on edge and he was vying wretchedly for relief. In these rare moments of uncagedness, he’d usually go to a bar, find a pretty girl, and take her home. Use her screams of pleasure to drown out the other horrific ones in his nightmares. But instead, he sought her out and he really didn’t have a rhyme or reason. It was as if his thumb gravitated towards her name as opposed to anyone else’s. Maybe it was intrigue. They were both single now and therefore nothing was stopping them from giving into their desires. Or maybe he just missed her. Crazy, right? “Didn’t feel like being alone. And there’s very few people in this world I can tolerate for long periods of time. Plus, I thought we’d catch up. How’s modeling going?” He was deflecting and not doing a very good job at it. Yet, he really was interested in her life. Where she’d been, who she’s spent her time with since the ugly divorce, if she was interested in spending her time with damaged goods like him.

"You ever play?” Not one for bashfulness or the missing of an opportunity, Xavier stepped up to the billiard table beside the other male. At first glance, his new company looked too pretty to be in a back alley, grunge horde like this but even Xavier knew never to judge a book by its cover. Some of his former inmates would’ve said the same thing about him when he first arrived in their pod, until they realized that looks can be deceiving and sometimes even the prettiest chassis can be the most scrappy. Perhaps Xavier was curious if the other male was of the same stock. Often surrounded by darkness, he could easily recognize it in others and was drawn to it like a sailor returning the call of his siren. “The first game’s usually free. But, I’d be lyin’ if I said the guys here don’t enjoy cleanin’ our your pockets. Gotta be careful. Especially of Tony.” An index finger was thrust at a corner of the room, signifying a burly man with a gray, wiry beard and tight leather vest. Xavier was just messing around, Tony was a huge teddy bear who loved giving out hugs and offering up weird, life advice in the form of obscure riddles he picked out of a bible or a Guns ‘N Roses verse. “Xavier. Where you from, man?“ It was safe to say, even though the town was small he still had yet to meet everybody. He wasn’t equipped enough to recognize a local when he saw one.

Karaoke. What was he thinking? The truth is, he wasn’t. He’s mindless, has been this way for so long, he doesn’t even know how to be anything else. Amid the grandiose performance of a lifetime, of a local elderly belting out the lyrics to ‘It’s Not Unusual’ is Xavier hunched over the bar, nursing a full glass of whiskey. He was in one of his lowest moods. Caught up in the reminisce of a past life that no longer existed, that was all but ripped away from him in the blink of an eye. The event was horrendous and lasted for three straight years without hiccup or interstice. Be it nostalgia or the fact he craved familiar amity in his life, he reached out to her. Asked her to meet. He figured a public place would be the best place to start. A restaurant would’ve felt too romantic and his home, too personal. He wanted her close just not so close, he ran the risk of falling into a blackhole. Khair of all people, didn’t deserve to be dragged into his messes. He wished to spare her if he could, knowing she had her own demons to fight and it wasn’t her responsibility to take on someone else’s. Least of all, his.
