That was definitely not the response she expected. “What?” Dallas slipped her phone into her bag and stood up, wanting to move away from the man. She had a feeling she knew who he was since she knew from Kala that their father was going to roll into town. And from their last conversation, it was clear that the man would seek her out if she knew of her existence. She just didn’t expect him to abruptly storm up to her.
Her eyes went over to her sister, “Is he about to cry? Because… please don’t.”

Standing there, Kala felt like she was playing witness to something that wasn’t meant for her to see. Like she was intruding in on some special moment, and what she wanted most in this instant was to genuinely not be there. She turned to her sister but barely got a chance to open her mouth.
“I just can’t help myself,” Erik exclaimed in Kala’s stead, and without so much as a warning, he lunged forward and wrapped his arms around his daughter. “Oh, baby girl, it’s been so many years since I’ve gotten to hold ya.” He held onto her for a moment longer before holding her out at arms length. “I’m sorry, it’s just been so long, and you’re so grown.”
