I want to talk more about this, since i've barely spoken about my obvious fascination with pastor gold.
Religion has always been an interesting topic to me, i'm an atheist but i was raised in a household where we would say our prayers every single night. (I won't go into detail about my personal experiences practicing this religion.)
Pastor gold is an individual that we've only seen in the Lovejoy Baptism MV, and even though there's theories about his beliefs and what he seems to follow, it's left sort of vague.
Though i personally associate him with Pay & Display, religion is a common theme all across the One Simple Trick album. Another song that i really like is Monochrome, i would like to point out the lyrics "I live in split decisions" and "I'll pray to anything that gets me by", there's a lot to unpack there.
My take on the Pastor Gold persona is one i've built with pieces of multiple songs of the album, i don't think everything is about him but it would make sense for the themes to have an involvement in him too. Following the critique and comments throughout the album, he's a pastor that focuses a lot on profits (i will give him the benefit of the doubt in regards of it being intentional or not, since he could be blissfully unaware of his actions as religiously blinded people could often be.) and, from what we can see in the MV, he's possibly religiously psychotic/has religiously psychotic episodes. Which could be the reason why he presumably passes away at the end of the Baptism MV.
I'm speaking mainly focusing on the visuals, as i'm not mentioning any references or analyzing the lyrics.
He really stands out to me, this character seems to be a caricature of the irony that religion follows. It is not specified which one it is, but there's no need to know, it can be interpreted as whichever fits your point of view or what you would like to believe.
To this day i still go to a christian church from time to time, Pastor Gold feels, to me, like an amplified version of some of the sermons i've heard when assisting, with small moments inbetween or at the end where someone stands up to the microphone and sprinkles in words of promotion, be it a course or classes, which are advertised as "free" but with a fee for "other needs" (the establishment, a donation, food, etc.)
And i quote, —"This knowledge is free for anyone who wishes to be saved, if you're looking for salvation or to go to heaven we'll guide you, you'll just have to pay 25 dollars for the church."
Just putting it out there.
