My hello singlish instructional kit is coming together. Can't wait to finish this up. Things completed so far: 1. Confirmed design, printed and cut up all required printouts. 2. Saddle stitched all of them. Things remaining: 1. Packaging. 2. Presentation.

Last year on April 2013. Singaporean artist Samantha Lo faces 15 charges of mischief pleaded guilty on Tuesday to seven counts of spray painting Singlish phrases and plastering an adhesive sticker.

Me being a designer was against the idea that her design was rejected and wasn't appreciated by the authorities. I felt her work was for a good cause. To attract people and humor is incorporated which is very similar to what i want to do for my mezzo doc.

In an interview, she mentioned this "Hence, the stickers. “It was very straightforward. Four or three words. It was meant to capture your attention in five seconds. ”, "But I have to be honest. I miss putting things up to make people react." How much she actually believe in it to do it. Her street art movement inspired me as well to create a sticker book. But of course not to be created to paste it in public but to support the idea of it.

A short documentary video that i found in youtube, on what singlish is to the foreigners in Singapore. Precisely the problem for my documentary. The fact that most foreigners do not actually understand singlish. This backs up my concept of a need for a instruction kit that is beneficial to them as a form of communication.

This is a nation built from the sweat of uncultured immigrants who arrived 100 years ago to bust their asses in the boisterous port. Our language grew out of the hardships of these ancestors. And Singlish is a key ingredient in the unique melting pot that is Singapore. This is a city where skyscraping banks tower over junk boats; a city where vendors hawk steaming pig intestines next to bistros that serve haute cuisine. The [Speak Good English Movement]’s brand of good English is as bland as boiled potatoes. If the government has its way, Singapore will become a dish devoid of flavor. And I’m not talking cock.

Is This The New English? by gazzdevreede A series of screen printed posters aimed to highlight and question the ever increasing use of ‘txt spk.’ I translated popular passages of Shakespeare into txt spk while below the translation is the traditional Shakespearian English. The idea was to see the contrast between the traditional English language with correct punctuation and grammar juxtaposed with the ever increasing txt spk used primarily amongst young people. Will txt spk become the new English?

Txt spk is smth common in singlish too. Commonly used amongst Singaporeans esp when texting is much more used than calling.

Some people might do it because they used to it, but some people are doing it because they wanted to. Some Singaporean is proud with the language they are using; yet some of them might dislike the accent a lot. After all, it is a culture; and a culture is one of the ways to promote Singapore tourism to the world.
