Leonardo’s role in the Hamato Clan-a few thoughts
!SPOILERS AHEAD AND TW FOR MENTIONS OF SENSITIVE THEMES!
1. Vulnerability behind the mask
Leonardo’s personality is characterised by teasing remarks, superior actions, and playful jokes that make his brothers feel teased. It’s common in the series to see the red striped turtle do these actions to his family and/or to villains.
But it’s also true that behind his facade there is also a hint of vulnerability he doesn’t want to show. The attitude he has doesn’t define Leo at all; it’s just a temporary shield to his fears and vulnerabilities.
2. Leo’s Narcissistic Tendencies
The second thing that defines Leo as “vulnerable” is his narcissism. He only ‘cares about himself’ (that’s how Raph thinks) and doesn’t work with his brothers, but does only his way.
Truth is, Leo suffers from a Narcissistic Personality Disorder where he thinks he has the spotlight, and if no one likes him, then he feels like he is useless and no one loves him.
When Leo is narcissistic, it’s a sign that he is searching for attention, not to be better than others.
3. Leo’s future and attachment to Donnie
Lastly, in the Movie we see a glimpse of Future Leo. Now, you may think he is now more mature and has more independence to prevent his narcissism. That is not always the case, though.
Leo is yes mature, but he’s only 35 years old in the Future and is new as the leader of the Resistance.
And even if he is Casey’s sensei, he is still vulnerable and often panics if the young man is hurt or gets in danger.
Another thing I noticed is the dynamic Leo has with his twin Donnie. Since they were born they were always attached, and that explains their dynamic.
And in the Future, when Donnie is gone, Leo can’t help but have various panic attacks and grief anxiety.
It’s not unusual that twins complete themselves, and Leo is very attached to his twin brother in an affectionate way.
What do you think?
