“ you’re a tad too close, mate. ” miles exclaimed in irritation. “ it’s like no one down here knows about personal space. take a step back or i’ll rearrange your face. ”
“you’re clearly in a good mood.” ximena deadpanned, scribbling passively on her clipboard. “but you’re definitely over-exaggerating, i would hardly call the same room, albeit how small, too close. let me know when you’ve calmed down.”

Manu looks up from his food at Ximena, unwittingly dropping the chunk of pie that was perched at the end of his fork. She had a first kiss? When? Where? With who? Okay Manu, calm down. She’s a big girl, she can make her own decisions. He clears his throat, and tries to play it cool. “I-interesting… so uh, when did this happen?”
Between bites, Ximena nodded only somewhat listening. “New Years?” she said off-handedly, barreling through to her point. “Like most of your life was lived outside, right? Maybe we’re all stunted because we only have each other to choose from, you know. Doesn’t it feel like we’d end up settling?”

It wasn’t very often that Xavier found himself homesick and when he did, it was usually due to the bland, unseasoned food they were expected to eat. So he had been rolling his food around the plate with his fork when Ximena had found him. “What?” He mumbled, his mind still thinking about his mom’s cooking. “Oh, it’s nothing. I just miss mom’s cooking is all. I was thinking how during the holiday season she’d always make so many tamales we’d be eating them for days. Did you ever learn how to make them?”
“Is that really it?” Relief washed over her at the thought of her brother’s greatest disappointment being simply food related. “Hopefully this means you’re finally growing tired of eating nothing but junk food, but I resent this line of questioning,” she frowned reliving the very real memories of the last time she tried to make a something without a recipe. “Next time they do restocks, I’ll send in a request for some real ingredients and ask mom for recipe. In the meantime, you can actually try cooking.”

miles rubbed the bridge of his nose. he should’ve known she’d come up with something like that. she could risk blowing the entire operation if they were discovered and that would surely disqualify them, which he would hate, as that would mean they failed. that he failed. he shook his head, about to go for a long rant on how risky that approach would be, and how it would be better for them to just wait it out and pick up on their target once he left by his own accords, but it seemed that ximena was already finding ways to get onto the roof and block the cell signal. “the sound of the cars would block my hearing from up on the roof. if i can just get a few stories up, then i should be able to have a perfect view and vantage point.” he exclaimed while looking at his watch. they had just barely entered the simulation, and here they were, treating it as if it was a real life situation. he knew that the big guys were watching their every move though, and now wasn’t the time that he wanted to doubt his partner, so he started climbing.
luckily this wouldn’t be a mission with any hostiles. miles knew advanced combat techniques and was more than good with a gun, but his powers wasn’t offensive in any manner. he’d have to rely fully on ximena should it come to it, and he’d rather not that it did, even if he trusted her enough to look out for him. he fished out an earpiece from his pocket. an apparatus that acted as a comm so they could stay in contact even if they weren’t in each others immediate area and a he was sure she had hers as well. he plugged it into his ear and then nodded at her. “just let me know when you block the signal and i’ll keep an eye and ear out. as long as no one sees us.” he said while taking a quick look around once more to secure the area. “remember the cameras and good luck.” a worried smile spread across his lips in hope that she would be careful.
perhaps it was arrogance, this was just a simulation after all - though the importance of doing well was still her top priority - but more so, showing innovation and finding rather simple, yet effect methods than just sitting around and waiting. hell, if they were justgoing to wait there would’ve been no need for special agents to be called in - a stakeout was a staple in every buddycop movie - but this wasn’t a movie and they weren’t buddy cops. pulling herself up the rungs after miles. she watched him as weariness seemed to ooze from him. “don’t worry about it batboy, you know i’d take a bullet for you - at least this time.” resting a, what was meant to be reassuring, hand on his shoulder, she gave him a quick wink before adjusting her ear piece.
ximena nodded before making it to the edge of the roof. she had slightly misjudged the distance from the edge of the apartment complex to the hanging platform. still, taking a deep breath, she focused on her breathing - the steady rise and fall of her chest anchoring her. channeling into the often overlooked realm of ( w a v e s ) the familiar warmth spread through her chest. the aura of heat, for lack of a better word, was akin to television static in her bloodstream. disrupting communication services of any device that could be recording her. the haze produced by the disorganized transferral of energy was decent coverage as she took a running jump to the scaffolding. it clanged loudly as she landed on the platform, wincing at the impact. “you aren’t so bad, nips.” she says, using the automated pulley system to rise slowly. “are you able to judge the intesity of keystrokes so even if someone’s in another room you could hear their password being imputed and based on the delay?”

she’s in a hurry when she stomps by the first time, but as the sight registers through the haze of anger ximena backtracks. “why aren’t you eating? is something wrong? who am i killing?” her concern turned interrogation escalates quickly as she stops in front of her older brother.

“The first time I kissed a boy I spent an hour in the shower thinking about it afterwards, but now I don’t even remember their name. Isn’t that weird?” she questions out between bites of pie. It was late and most of the agents were either asleep or enjoying the few breaths of privacy that any of them could salvage in such a confined space. The mixture of tart fruit and maybe running on only four hours of sleep across the passed four days weren’t doing well for her - making her unnecessarily bold. “How come people don’t talk about the weird expectations of intimacy when we’re supposed to think about it as a viable option to procreate? Seems like a pyramid scheme gone wrong if you really think about.”

miles plopped the headphones out of his ears and left them in his jacket that he took off before entering the vr room. he had been longing for some action, and here it was. he might not have looked excited, but every fiber of his body was ready to get started. ximena seemed to be in the room already as well and he flashed her a teethy grin as if this was going to be a piece of cake. he might’ve seemed cocky, but having been at the agency for so many years now, he knew not to underestimate these challenges they would be facing. “leave this to me, cortés. this is my specialty. just keep me covered.”
he closed his eyes while the room turned on. the way the room flashed while getting ready gave his sensitive eyes a headache if he didn’t, and that wasn’t exactly a good way to start off the mission. “so, according to the lead, our connection to the organization is a white male, around his mid twenties.” he summed up, even if he knew ximena had probably read the file a thousand times like he had. he took a quick look around. the simulation had brought them outside the base and the mission had officially begun. “he supposedly works in an office in this area. i suggest we wait for him to get off and then tail him until he spills the details?” he then said as he checked that he had his firearm securely fastened to his belt. “any other idea?”
arriving early to work out different specs with the engineers, ximena went through all the facts of the simulation in her head - all the best and worst case scenarios as she sat in the middle of the blank room. it should have been eery, the advancement of technology leaving nothing in wake of all the potential it held. still, running through possibilities gave her something to anchor her mind to later on when they would be immersed in a reality that wasn’t quite theirs. as miles arrived, she greeted him warmly enough glancing down at her watch to note that he was on time. “ignoring the fact that you’re describing every criminal minds assailant ever, yes i read up on the file.” as she blinked, the world slotted into place, easily overlooked details merging together to form a reality that - if one were not careful - they could get lost in.
“no, no, that sounds like a great idea if i wanted to die of boredom. i mean we already know this guy is going to be on edge, i say we flush him out and end this - as great as you are, i don’t have all day to just stare into your eyes kid. if i can get to the roof, i can knock out cell service to everyone in the building and then it’ll be easy to spot the one guy who’s desperate for a signal.” pulling out the elastic keeping her hair in a ponytail, ximena shot him a quick grin before quickly braiding her hair so that it would rest down her back. “you can either wait down here or you can scale the buildings with me. whichever you think will give you a better vantage point.” eyes scanning from the office building’s neighboring apartment’s fire escape to the all too conveniently suspended platform hanging only about 13 stories from the ground. it shouldn’t have been too difficult to get to the roof - especially if she disrupted the recording signals of the cameras - but again, she just didn’t know about miles’ range. “so what’s it going to be?” she asked, pulling down the ladder to the fire escape.
