I hate it when I accidentally update my 3DS system only to realize that my R4i 3DS SDHC won't work on this new system version of my 3DS. I've learned to be careful now, never automatically accepting any updates until my R4 is properly updated itself. But this wasn't always the case.

What most people don't realize is that none of the 3DS (or even DSi) system updates are mandatory. You have the option of saying NO, or selecting NO, when you are presented with the request to update. A good way to make sure that you don't even get the request is to turn the WiFi off on your 3DS XL… but… you don't have to go that far. All you have to do is make sure you pick NO when you're asked to update.

I know a lot of R4 3DS owners that updated to the new Nintendo 3DS v5.1.0-11 update as soon as it came out. Not even taking the time to go and check the Official R4 3DS homepage to see if there was a compatible kernel for their flash cards.

Well, for those of you that updated, you may have been without your R4 for a few days. However, the new kernel for the R4 3DS now makes it compatible with the 3DS 5.1.0-11 consoles too. So your card is now compatible with the 5.1.0-11 as well as all previous system os versions on the 3DS as well.

If you have updated your console, but not your card yet, you may have to run the firmware updater file from the official site. Not all cards require you to run the updater though. Any new 2013 version of the R4i SDHC V1.4.5 or the R4 3DS RTS cards will work just fine, simply by copying your new firmware files over to the micro SD and putting your R4 back in you console.

The first was the 6.0 update that put a few new features on your 3DS.... but it ended up having some issues or some bugs as people have said. Nintendo, as always, is very fast when it comes to having buggy system software and followed up the 6.0 update with a brand new 6.1.0 fix. This version fixed many of the bugs that were present. But both the 6.0 and the new 6.1.0 updates meant that a lot of the popular flash carts out there stopped working. No... they didn't break. They just were not recognized by the 3DS or 3DS XL systems any more. Unlike most updates though, this one was a bit different. It "killed" most fake cards out there, by doing a hardware check. The authentic R4 3DS cards however needed just a kernel update, instead of having to cut traces on the pcb of your r4 or having to search and buy a whole new one.

Thankfully updating the firmware is both easy.... and free. And you won't have to go out and grab a new card like you would if you have any of the unofficial cards made by factories that seem to do little more than just a grab and run... they grab your money for the carts they sell you, and then run the other way when a new system update comes out for the 3DS and they don't have new firmware kernels to support it. Sadly a lot of people end up getting these cards, because they're sold at really low prices. But unsuspecting buyers have no idea that they'll have to go out and get a new one R4 every few months as the 3DS gets updated. This is what I always tell my friends and family, and the people I hang out with in the forums, that they should ALWAYS buy the original cards, and never get some fake.

The R4i Gold 3DS confirmed to work with the newest 6.1.0 are limited in number, and you'll notice that the list is made up of mostly just genuine cards. While a few clones or fakes could be put on the list.. I won't add them, as they may not last past the next update at all.
