“Now that we all live here, there’s no reason for figting against ourselves anymore, right?” Horikawa lowers the tray of mochi to where the uchigatana is sitting. After all, what’s the point of keeping old feuds when they’re all fighting for the same cause?

“Why would it be a bad thing? Ah— Don’t tell me you’ve been causing trouble!”

“Hmmmm do I hear someone whining about Hijikata-san not taking them?”

Souji he was not whining…. and why do you have his Haiku again.

“I-I’m not whining! I just think sitting here without doing anything is a waste of time...” One could argue that that sounded like whining, but Horikawa firmly believed otherwise. It was just good time management habits, that’s all.

But more importantly, that book in Okita’s hand is quick to divert the wakizashi’s attention from anything else. Had he been sneaking into his mater’s room again? That’s... He exhales a deep sigh. “Okita-san...”

“I’m very lost… I’ve never been in this part of town before, and I thought wandering might bring me back to somewhere I recognize, but it didn’t work…”

He couldn’t blame this person. In all honesty, it had taken Horikawa a while to learn all the twist a turns and shortcuts this big city has, and there are still things left to get the hang of.

Horikawa offers the stranger a smile before continuing. “That’s understandable. I work around here, so I think I can help you out! Where do you need to get?”

“While I’m glad Kane-san is being used today, just being idle all day is a bit...” He wished their master had taken him on patrol, too. Or at least given him something to do.

“Could it be... are you lost?” Even if Horikawa isn’t the best at directions, he might be able to offer some help to this stranger, if that’s the case.

There it was-

         Yamato felt the tiniest bit bad the moment Horikawa deflated. It was painful to see the usually chipper wakizashi’s smile falter even for a moment. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that his smile was something that could easily keep someone going even in a bad situation.

“ I-, ” Pause. “ Are you sure? Well, I mean, yes he’s a little late with arriving. ”

He hesitates for a moment, before he decides to extend a hand to ( awkwardly ) pat his companion on the arm. “ But, you are right- there are a lot of things that could be done around here. ”

Oh no, no! It seems like he made the uchigatana worry too much. That was a bit careless. Kanesada or not, he couldn’t say he wasn’t happy to see the faces of his long time friends again. There was an awkward laugh as he scratched his cheek, only to nod again when the question was made.

“I’m sure. Oh!” The wakizashi's fist bumped against his open palm as the idea came to mind. “Maybe I could make oden for everyone to celebrate! Or maybe curry? It’s dark already, so I suppose it must be dinner time.”

Oh dear, there it was- the question that would leave just about anyone shaking in their shoes if Kanesada were nowhere to be found. Yamato can’t help but bring a hand up to adjust the scarf around his neck in an attempt to buy time for his answer.

“ Well-, ” he begins, brows knit together while he finally musters up the courage to disappoint Horikawa with a quiet-, “ He’s not here right now. ”

“Oh...”

The wakizashi’s face falls for a second, his initial excitement of meeting Kanesada again deflated. 

He doesn’t want Yamato to feel bad, though —he’d been so cheerful just a second ago! And so Horikawa’s smile is back on his face in flash, all whilst waving his hands a bit. “It’s fine, it’s fine! I’m sure he’s just late coming home, isn’t he? There are plenty of things to do here meanwhile.”

“ It really has! I’m glad you are here though- ” ( to keep everyone in line ) “ since it has been pretty hectic lately. ”

Well, that wasn’t a lie. With Nagasone’s return things were- without a doubt- going to spiral into an explosive mess somewhere down the line.

Soft laughter escapes Horikawa’s lips as he nods. “I can imagine. Is the rest of us here too?” With the rest of us meaning the other Shinsengumi swords. And with that thought in mind, there comes the inevitable question of, “Have you seen Kane-san?”

“ Horikawa, it’s nice to see you again! ” Look at him. He’s smiling. So pure.

“Yamato-san! It’s been a while, hasn’t it?” He’s happy to come back to see the uchigatana in such a good mood.
