Listened to Olivia’s new album, and “Expectations” is SO Amy-coded. As the oldest daughter, she is very secure in knowing what she wants and what she doesn’t want, and as much as she’s a hopeless romantic at heart… the right guy doesn’t come along like in the movies, and for a moment while she’s in college, she tries to go on the dating scene, but each guy that she goes out with is an immediate “no” to her. She wants someone that she knows she won’t scare off, and most normal guys aren’t like that. Plus with her intuition, each guy she knows pretty early on isn’t the “one”.

She’s not going to settle for just any guy.

I’ve been so busy at work that I missed my girl’s birthday (02/21/1981), but in honor of her birthday here’s a synopsis of her that I wrote to get her story across more to those who may not be familiar with her.

Amy Ray is the quiet kind of creative people notice only when she chooses to be noticed: a small, pale figure bent over a canvas in a dim studio, fingers stained with ink and paint that looks like it came from the underbelly of a dream. She keeps to herself not from shyness as much as from calculation—there are too many prying eyes in the world that would tangle her in questions she refuses to answer. Her work is a collection of dark, beautiful things: taxidermied mementos arranged like still-life confessions, charcoal sketches of empty playgrounds at midnight, watercolors that bleed into shapes of faces she swears she saw in sleep. Growing up the daughter of two notorious criminals taught her that loyalty is currency; she answers only to her family. That fierce allegiance has sharpened her solitude into something protective, almost militant, and made her the place where secrets go to be kept.

There is a strangeness to Amy that her careful compositions cannot quite hide: prophetic dreams that arrive with the odor of wet pavement and old paper, delivering scenes so vivid she wakes with ink under her nails and the weight of a future she has briefly borrowed. Sometimes the visions are mercies—small warnings that let her sidestep danger—but often they are uncanny debts, showing consequences she cannot prevent without causing other, darker ripples. Her dark side—that Ray bloodline of hers—is not melodrama; it is an ethical landscape painted in charcoal: compromises, quiet violences, decisions made for the survival of the few she loves. She translates the unbearable into images and keeps whatever she cannot render in paint locked behind a stubborn silence, promising herself that whatever the dreams demand, she will meet them on her own terms to keep her sisters, Tara and Leanne ( @elliehallers), safe. She couldn’t save her father, as she was much too young when he passed, and then ultimately she couldn’t save her mother years later, but she will do whatever it takes to protect her sisters. They’re all she has left now.
