I need to share this absolutely highly stressful afternoon I almost had today. I'm walking my dog. It's supposed to rain this week and we might not get out much, so today, while it was nice, we needed to go on our walkies. We get down the street to this grassy bit where you can cut down to the fields by the school and I've decided we're going to go down there, loop around to the store, then back home.
Puppy loves the fields. She races across them when we're there. She does the same thing today. Takes off flying, she rolls around in the grass, she's all excited to be alive, right?
As I get across the field to the parking area, that's when I see the tiny, yellow caution signs they put up to warn people the grass has been treated with pesticides. They're staked into the dirt, like, underneath the fence that separates the field from the parking area, they're easily missable.
Suddenly I'm scared and angry. So I get Puppy off the grass and check out the tiny signage. One of them says they've treated for pesticides and to take the sign down after 24 hours. But how do I know this sign came with the pesticides or if they're generic bought from the hardware store?
Handwritten on the sign is a date from five days previous and some Letters and a string of numbers. No idea what any of this means. All my flight or fight brain knows is that my dog rolled around in grass that was recently treated with pesticides. When the guys come and do my grass at my house, they usually tell me to keep the dog inside for the next hour, but who knows what sort of industrial pesticides the company the town hires uses? I don't know.
The internet says my dog is probably fine and I should finish the walk, hose her off when we get home, and just pay attention to her for the next day to make sure she isn't vomiting. But I'm already spiraling.
So I take her home and hose her off. She doesn't like that one bit and keeps running away from the water. Now she's damp and thinks we're playing a game. I am not playing a game.
I look up the phone number for the public works department. But small town, understaffed department, we're voting on the town budget again next month -- the Office keeps irregular hours. And the town hall is about to close. So no answers.
Now, I took a snap of the tiny, yellow sign. and I realize the string of numbers is a phone number. But I can't figure out the last number. It's either a four, or a nine, maybe a seven? I google the numbers. The first two don't make any sense for my area. The third one, however, is the number for a locally owned landscaping company!!! I see this dude's trucks everywhere! He advertises at the fields where all this started!
I get this dude on the phone. He reassures me that everything is fine. The signs really ought to have come down four days ago. We only had to keep off the grass for twenty four hours to be safe. They were just treating for grubs and something else. My dog is completely safe. Everything is alright. My stress evaporates.
I still feel a little drained, but not stressed anymore. I was going to go to a small social gathering but now I'm not sure I can handle other people. I just want to take a shower, order takeout, and watch something stupid on tv while I do crafts.
