“ Do you need some help with that?” Dirk rushed up to the other person, grabbing hold of the books that were threatening to topple over in their arms. “Careful now, it’d be pretty painful if these were to fall on you.”

It wasn’t uncommon for Poppy to have books spilling over themselves. Her bag had already been packed but she had so much studying and pleasure reading to do, she couldn’t leave the library without everything she had. The tricky part was seeing over the stack thanks to her tiny stature but it was something she was used to.

However, she began to teeter. “Oof!” The noise came from her throat. That’s when she heard the offer for help. Poppy hated getting help but was in a desperate situation. She didn’t want the precious books being trampled by other students who didn’t care so she acquiesced. “Yes, thank you.” She passed only a few along. “I’m just going to the classroom over here for some light reading.”

There’s a reason Poppy wears pigtails and bright clothing. It’s her way of not growing up. She was expected to grow up so early on in life, had so many expectations put on her that she felt she didn’t have much time to play so she plays dress-up everyday. Although it’s a hard barrier to get through, Poppy has an innate childlike quality to her. And if anyone dared touch her legos, she would make sure they step on one.

Bird Set Free;; Sia

An anthem that Poppy can do anything no matter who tries to knock her down. She truly believes in herself and that she’s capable of anything life throws at her but also is aware that there are people in the world who are going to challenge that. This song is a power anthem that screams no to a world that wants to destroy everything she fights for.

Oh No!;; Marina and the Diamonds

Poor Poppy. She doesn’t know how to open herself up to the outside world. She grew up in a militant home. Rules, direction, expectations, order -- these were some of the only things she’s ever known. Because of that, she sticks to those beliefs but to an extreme so much so that she’s isolated herself and doesn’t know how to get out of the box she’s fixed herself in. She wouldn’t ever change her intelligence and determination but if she understood it was possible to have success in multiple areas of her life, she wouldn’t be so misunderstood by others, but more importantly, herself.

Livin’ on a Prayer;; Bon Jovi

When no one is watching, Poppy will blast music and sing at the top of her lungs without caring about whether or not it’s perfect. She spins and uses her hairbrush as a microphone and squeezes her eyes so tight all she can see are stars dancing with her. It’s the time for her to let loose and be silly without worrying about being judged. Her muscles loosen and she’s nothing but smiles. It’s a heaven she shares only with herself. For now.

Poppy puts on a hard face. She makes it seem like nothing can break her. While she’s a force to reckoned with in many arenas, she hides the fact that she can feel pain. She knows how to put on the face everyone expects of her, hard-pressed and sticking to the book, but what she doesn’t let them see is the loneliness she feels when harsh words are thrown at her. She doesn’t tell anyone she cries in the shower. If she can’t handle the fact that she can break like anyone else can, then she refuses to show it to the rest of the world.

Relationships are the last thing Poppy ever thought about. She didn’t understand the want for a significant other. She could appreciate how people looked but that’s as far as it ever went. Having to put the time and energy into a romantic relationship would just get in the way of her being successful. But then something happened in the Restricted Section of the library that will continue to confuse her, but once she starts seeing what something special might look like, she’ll want to bring that person to the world.

Anyone would willingly say that Poppy is moody. She has a habit of showing displeasure, disgust, disappointment and spurts of anger. It’s rare that she shows her loving side, the side that genuinely cares but that’s how she was raised. She has a wide range on emotions built up inside her that don’t know how to come out properly. But as her years have progressed, there have been a few people who have seen her compassion and her tears. She is slowly learning to embrace the fact that life is an array of feelings instead of the few she was allowed to show at home. But she will blossom and be able to fully embrace them for the world to see once she has a grasp of it herself.

Being a Muggleborn has always been a challenge in the Wizarding World, but in the current state, it’s becoming alarmingly dangerous. Poppy has a fear that something will happen to her but has more conviction that things will right themselves and she can help lead the way. She sees herself as a leader but this song shows her ability to see everyone working together, especially Muggleborns sticking together. They’re a special breed and deserve their spot in the world and Poppy won’t hesitate to go down fighting for herself and those in her same position.

“well, someone’s grumpy.” milo remarked as he listened to the other speak. he didn’t take any offence, though. “everything alright?” he asked with genuine concern.

“Why does everyone assume I’m grumpy all the time?” Poppy snapped then cleared her throat and lowered her voice. “I’m not grumpy. I’m having an ordinary day.” And by ordinary she meant lonely.

Poppy had woken up wanting to bounce down the stairs and give someone a hug. Anyone. It was just one of those mornings but a lump had formed when she realized she wasn’t close enough to anyone to be able to do such a thing so when the older Gryffindor acknowledged her presence, she didn’t know how to react. Immediately she felt foolish. Her snappy nature is what created distance between her and others.

“I was just going to my table to eat breakfast and stubbed my toe,” she lied through her teeth and gave a small smile. “Have a great breakfast, yeah?”

Their last interaction hadn’t been a great one. Not even a good one. No sugarcoating it. It had been a bad one. But that’s exactly why Poppy wanted to try again with Lily. After all, Lily was intelligent, seemingly bright and had things going for her. The two should have some sort of camaraderie. Poppy didn’t know how that would happen -- or if it would -- but some sort of olive branch should be given, she thought.

But no apologies.

Back in the room where they spoke so harshly to one another, Poppy sat down next to Lily and looked at her warmly. “Lily,” she said, “You’re having a good morning, I hope.” As she spoke, she went into her bag and took something out. “I wasn’t sure what your take was on using ink colors other than black, but I find that making notes in different colors helps coordinate things better for studying later on. I have this green one I never use and thought another scholar might like to give it a try.”

Something seemed to set Poppy off, but Aimee wasn’t sure what it was. She let the girl take the book off the table, caressing it gently as if it was a treasured object. Which, of course, it was… but more for sentimental reasons than anything else. Aimee didn’t have the heart to tell Poppy that, though the book looked old, it was simply well-bound and well-read. It couldn’t have been older than her father; it was a wonder what a good binding could do to make a book look older and more valuable than it actually was. “It’s… yeah, it’s one of my favorites. I’ve brought it with me to school every year, now. It’s practically tradition for me to read it once over in the first month back. I loved having the bookshop to play around in, but it feels more like home than it does a shop, now. I suppose it’s special, but… it’s always been my normal.” She shrugged, smiling as Poppy sat down across from her at the table. “Oh, that’s an underrated one. Most people don’t give it that much of a chance.” But before Aimee even had time to think up a response, Poppy was asking again. It was clear that she was eager for an answer. “You want me to pick one?” she asked. “I used to love the story of Icarus – the beautiful tragedy of wanting something too much… I feel like you can tell a lot about a person by their favorite myths, don’t you?”

“Traditions are wonderful aren’t they? Back home, my oldest sister, Briony, would read Winnie the Pooh to be as a kid. It may seem silly but when I go home, after everyone’s gone to bed, I’ll sneak into her room and ask her to read to me.” Poppy lit up at the memory. “It’s never ceased to make me smile.”

While she couldn’t understand a family owning a bookshop, she could see how it could become a type of home. “Bookshops and libraries are magical places. It may be your normal but I find that beautiful. How great would it be for everyone if they surrounded by the written word? There would probably be more open minds in the world. Or so I would like to think.”

Poppy placed her elbows on the table and cradled her face. “I’ll admit it is hard to pick just one — especially for you, I’m sure — but Icarus. A very, very wise choice. Another that doesn’t get the recognition it deserves.” She took in what Aimee said. “I think you’re right about it telling a lot about a person.” She laughed a bit. “I wonder what that says about us. Hades, Persephone and Icarus. What a trio that would be.”

remington wiped his hands against his robes in an inefficacious attempt to brush away the nicotine slightly staining his fingers. the halls of hogwarts were returning to their usual bustle at last, everyone except remington seemed to be appeased by it. he noticed the figure slowing just beside him as he pushed past younger students, but continued on his way towards his common room, only stopping when he felt their hand on his arm. “can i help you?” he sighed, finally looking at the other.

It made Poppy gag. She never understood the appeal of smoking; making others inhale the smoke, the smell clogging the air and sticking to clothes, hair and -- bleh -- breath. Poppy shuddered. And they weren’t supposed to be doing it.

She turned the corner and saw Remington. She sighed. Why did it have to be him? “Do you do this just to drive me mad, Remington? You know full well you can’t be doing this all the time.” They may not have had a great relationship but there was something about him that made Poppy a bit protective even though he was everything she couldn’t stand. That could’ve been the reason, actually.

“You know I have to take away points, right?” She coughed and waved the scent away from her nose. “You smell awful.” Poppy turned around so she could take a deep inhale then spun around to look at Remington again. “Five points of Ravenclaw,” she said despondently. She should have taken more and would have if it had been anyone else, but she couldn’t let him go off with nothing.

“Go wash up. Maybe we can --” she wasn’t sure. “Do something. Just don’t wreak of smoke please?” Poppy asked with a pathetic, pleading look on her face.

Aisling spent the majority of her time being the person others relied on for help. She was always the one someone called when they needed to talk - and she liked that. It made her feel fulfilled knowing she could do be there for people. Sometimes, though, she needed someone to be there for her. It became difficult, in those situations, to ask for that. Instead, she usually hid away somewhere for a moment to wallow in peace. 

This time it was the restricted section in the library. The last thing she expected was to find Poppy there. Aisling, admittedly, had not paid much attention to the Ravenclaw. Beyond seeing each other across the hall and in classes, they had little chance for interactions. However, hearing her encouraging words and looking into those warm, brown eyes made Aisling wish she had. “Thanks.” She whispered, too stunned to say much else. Instinctively, she took the other girl’s hand and let herself be pulled to her feet. 

“I’m, uh, I’m Aisling.” The introduction was lacklustre; her tongue still tied in knots, tear tracks drying slowly into her skin. Aisling was known for her sunny confidence, but something about Poppy made her nervous - it filled her stomach with butterflies. A blush overtook her pale flesh when she caught sight of their hands, still linked together, and quickly released her grasp. “Sorry.” 

It broke Poppy’s heart to see anyone in pain. She knew what it was like to hurt but her shell was as thick as the window panes that lined Hogwarts. She wasn’t easily broken — on the outside. When she saw Aisling on the floor in a secluded place she understood; she hadn’t wanted anyone to find her. Poppy knew that tactic all too well. It made Poppy think about her own insecurity.

She sighed deeply and softened her eyes as Aisling went for her hand. They didn’t know each other. Of course they knew of one another but that was different. When their hands touched, it felt like they were suddenly connected. The look in Aisling’s eyes was scared but open. It’s like she was really looking at Poppy. She did it in a way no one else at school, or anywhere, had. It was different and Poppy couldn’t place it. Not having that knowledge made her nervous. Aisling hadn’t let go of her hand right away.

Poppy looked down as her eyebrows squeezed together. She didn’t understand. She looked up at Ainsling with wide eyes but the other girl dropped her hand and apologized. 

“Sorry for what?” She genuinely wanted to know but shook her head. “I saw that you were crying and —“ Aisling’s eyes were red and puffy. Poppy wished she could have done something but didn’t know what. She wanted to get them somewhere they were supposed to be but there was something about the quiet and secluded restricted section that was comforting. “Do you want to talk about it?”

when poppy followed her it just stirred her temper further to its boiling point. “excuse me, i’m trying to get away from you and your ridiculous attitude.” she said in a loud whisper, trying to contain herself and quickly failing.

Of course she was trying to get away. Poppy wasn’t thick, she hated being misunderstood. Although, her behavior was pretty straightforward if she was being honest. She didn’t appreciate being told she was wrong. Lily shouldn’t have said that ...even though her intentions were probably good.

Poppy grabbed her paper and acted like she was making notes as she spoke. “You were trying to help. But I didn’t need your help. I’m perfectly capable —“ she could hear herself.

“Thank you for trying to help,” she couldn’t leave it there. “But I know I was correct.”

There were many reasons for Aimee to be in the library so late at night, but none of them involved looking at old books… especially those about mythology. But at the same time, Aimee couldn’t bring herself to the library without indulging herself and reading such books. It seemed criminal to leave them unread in her room, especially when she knew that she couldn’t get much studying done anyway. When Poppy spoke up, she closed the book quickly, as if she’d been caught. “What? Oh – thank you. I picked it out myself,” Aimee joked. At least it hadn’t been Ellie, or Eric, or Mulciber coming over to check and make sure she was actually doing what she’d set out to. “It’s from my parents’ bookshop back home. I just brought it down here in case anyone came to check in on me and see if I was really studying. Thank you, though – would you like to look at it? You can, if you want to…”

When Aimee shut the book so quickly Poppy inhaled sharply like she had just tortured the poor thing but regained her composure.

“Are you sure you wouldn’t mind?” Poppy took hold of the book and rubbed its spine softly as though she was telling it it was okay and had done nothing wrong. She loved books perhaps a little too much, if that were possible. Then she opened the pages carefully. “This book looks like it’s been around for ages. And you said it’s from your parent’s bookshop? Oh, you must’ve loved going there and having so many books at your disposal. I would simply die.”

Poppy sat down across from Aimee and turned to a random page in the book, scanning it briefly before looking up. “What is your favorite mythological story? Personally I’m a fan of Hades and Persephone. May seem a bit common but I’ve always found it fascinating and there are so many things people don’t know about their story. But there’s so many to choose from,” she paused for a beat. “Come on now. Your favorite?”

lily couldn’t believe the reaction she got and it was almost comical, which was why she snorted out a little laugh at the look on poppy’s face. but lily was a potions prodigy, she knew she was right. if poppy wanted to be an absolute bitch and burn off her nose, then so be it. lily smirked and purposefully, and loudly, dragged her chair further away from poppy. “sure.” anger could so easily cloud judgement and lily knew that from experience. fuck her for trying to help, right?

She didn’t work to make people not like her, it just sort of happened while people with the last name Lestrange and Mulciber and so on got to be whatever they wanted and were revered for it. But when Poppy Morgan did it? No. Unacceptable.

When Lily so loudly moved her seat, Poppy huffed. The only way she knew to respond was to pick her seat up with her tiny arms and move it next to Lily. With her hands on the desk, she leaned over and whispered, “You didn’t have to be so loud about it.”

Poppy’s foot was tapping and her face was getting red. Why did she care so much? He was being — just what she should have expected. This is why she didn’t show anyone her soft side because they would just made snide remarks or exert themselves as being something better than she was.

She rolled her eyes. “You think you know all that needs to be known, right? It’s pathetic. When someone speaks to you the way I just did you don’t dismiss it in such a crass manner. You should really try again.”

To be honest, Poppy may not have noticed the student sitting in the corner of the library if it hadn’t been for the old books in front of her. Poppy tried to focus on her studies but her eyes kept drifting to the corner. There had to be something wonderful over there if it was causing her concentration to break.

Not wanting anyone to touch her things, Poppy delicately placed her belongings in her bag and walked over, curiously. She didn’t even look to see who was sitting with the books before she ran her fingertips across the one on top. It was on Mythology.

“This is a gorgeous book,” she looked up. “Aimee, is it? Where did you find this? It’s magnificent.”

Having spent so much time together as children in Wales and then sending each other letters after Mary’s family moved, she and Poppy were thrilled to be reunited at Hogwarts. There wasn’t a day that went by that the feeling hadn’t changed. They were as tight as friends could get.

It was time for their weekly tea date and Poppy couldn’t wait to hear about everything Mary had been up to. When Mary came in, Poppy ran up and gave her a big hug. “I know it’s silly, we see each other in classes all day but there something I always love about it being just the two of us.” She motioned to a table set with a teapot, two dainty tea cups and a dish of sugar in the middle.
