“Only fifteen percent? I must be responsible for at least half of those. I don’t know why I haven’t learned my lesson,” Aimee joked. “But seriously, thanks. I know I should be more careful, but… if I haven’t learned by now, I don’t know if I’ve got a chance.”

“The falling books must be causing some type of amnesia.” Dirk teased, his grin widening. “You’re welcome, though really, it’s no problem. Well, next time if you still need help just come find me. I’d be happy to help if only to prevent further injury and possible memory loss.”

“Are you actually?” Ariel cocked an eyebrow at him. A small laugh escaped her and she shrugged a little, “Alright, if you really want, witness it is then I suppose,” She shifted the books she still held, indicating that he could give the others back.

“For insurance purposes you know, if case you want to file a claim against the author of...“ He looked at the title of the book he held in his hand. “A Study of Inorganic Potion Ingredients, because with a title like that you should sue them just on principle.”

There he went, going off on some righteous bit about how helping people was the answer to all the world’s problems… or something. Emma didn’t care how he responded, truthfully, and only half paid attention. “And I would argue that by letting them learn their lesson the hard way, I am helping them. Don’t get so upset. It wasn’t like they were in any real danger.”

He paused for a moment, contemplating what she’d said. Helping without actually helping. He had to admit that it made sense, in a strange sort of way. “Alright, I can see your point. Still any time I have the opportunity to help I like to.”

“That would be great!” Aimee exclaimed, grateful that Dirk happened to swoop in and take the books just in time. “I told a friend I’d return all these to the library for the both of us, and I didn’t realize how heavy they were until now…”

“Don’t worry about it, it happens all the time. A lot more often than you would think actually. About 15% of all accidents that occur here in the castle are book related.” He said, with a somber nod, before cracking a smile. “I’m just joking but you should be more careful, next time there might not be someone around to help.”

Ariel cocked her head a little. He seemed awfully happy to help her with her books, perhaps more than he ought to be, “Library, if I don’t have ‘em back before noon Pince really will give me that dent in my head,” She shrugged a little, “You don’t have to, I mean if you’ve got class or anything. I can get them.” 

“I’m headed that way so I can help if you like.” He said, gesturing over his shoulder to the direction of the library. “But if not then I’d happily accompany you to be sure you’re not crushed by them, or to be a witness if they do.”

“Could you imagine! What a sad little obituary that would be. Aurora Sinistra, sixteen, crushed to death by a pile of books she was just too weak to carry. Maybe that’s what people mean when they talk about the things you love hurting you the most.”

“Lucky for you, I’m here to help.” He smiled holding up a few of the books that had been sitting on the top. “I’m curious though, why so many? It seems like you could do with a few at a time until you had all the ones you needed. Unless, you really do want them to fall on you, because I must say that’s a pretty painful way to go I would imagine.”

“I wouldn’t bother with that,” Emma called out to Dirk, watching as he tried to help the other student. “If they haven’t realized that they could charm the books by now, maybe it’s time to let natural selection run it’s course.”

Dirk turned towards Emma when she spoke, unable to help the still obviously struggling student that walked in front between them. He kept his eyes trained on them, as if sheer willpower alone would keep the precarious stack from toppling over. When they had left his line of sight he focused on Emma. “If we have the ability to help someone in need then we should, natural selection be damned.”

andromeda couldn’t see who was offering to help her, but with how precariously balanced her books were, she couldn’t move a muscle to look. “no, no, i’ve got it-” but the books were suddenly moving, and she let out a gasp thinking that they were falling, only to realize that she was receiving the aforementioned help. she chuckled at herself, “thank you. i really did have it, but i suppose help doesn’t quite hurt.”

“My pleasure! After all, a helping hand never hurt anyone.” Dirk grinned at her and gestured to the books in his hand. “Did you need some help getting these somewhere?”

isn’t that DIRK CRESSWELL? yeah that is HIM, sitting there at the HUFFLEPUFF table with those other SIXTH years and i think i heard sybill saying they look like LEE JUNG SUK… whoever that is! when she looks into her crystal ball she sees well worn soft woolen scarves, walks through the wood in the fall, calloused fingers, singing off-key and not caring who hears, softly tousled hair, summer bonfires, and paperback books. anyway i’ve heard they’re pretty CONSIDERATE, INTELLIGENT, and PRACTICAL. apparently they’re a HALF-BLOOD but i’m sure that’s not related. — [ shantal : EST : 23 : she/her ]

Born to Brandon Cresswell and Vivian Young, Dirk is the eldest of their three children. The youngest two are twins and are ten years younger than their brother. From the minute they were born he’s felt an intense need to protect them. It’s a feeling that isn’t just limited to his sisters. He feels protective over anyone, it’s a big part of his nature, to care for everyone.

Dirk has always been helpful, but his helpfulness can also get him into trouble. He tends to bite off more than he can chew, what with doing favors for friends, or teachers, or just doing favors for random people he sees walking down the street.

One might think that his constant worrying about others would make him a nervous wreck but it’s quite the opposite. Dirk is as relaxed as they come, rolling with the punches that may come without too much worry. At times though he can seem as if he’s too relaxed and it gives off the impression that he’s dimwitted or just not very bright. Really though he doesn’t feel the need to boast about his accomplishments. His grades are actually quite good and any time he’s struggling he takes it upon himself to find a tutor. It’s his drive to be helpful that got him the position of sixth-year prefect, something that he’s quite proud of himself for.

He’s eager to be friends with everyone and generally has a happy disposition. It takes a lot to sour his mood. That being said, given his overly trusting nature, if Dirks trust is betrayed then he doesn’t associate with the offending party ever again. His favor once lost is lost forever. Dirk gives everyone his undying loyalty and expects it in return.

It wasn’t uncommon for Poppy to have books spilling over themselves. Her bag had already been packed but she had so much studying and pleasure reading to do, she couldn’t leave the library without everything she had. The tricky part was seeing over the stack thanks to her tiny stature but it was something she was used to.

However, she began to teeter. “Oof!” The noise came from her throat. That’s when she heard the offer for help. Poppy hated getting help but was in a desperate situation. She didn’t want the precious books being trampled by other students who didn’t care so she acquiesced. “Yes, thank you.” She passed only a few along. “I’m just going to the classroom over here for some light reading.”

“You’re welcome!” He chirped. Dirk happily took the books offered to him, stacking them into a neat pile of his own. The stack that Poppy was still carrying was still much too large for her but he didn’t want to argue the point any further, though he did raise a brow at her self described ‘light reading’. “If this is light reading I’d hate to see your idea of heavy reading.”

He laughed at his own joke then turned over the spine of one of the books to see what its title was. “Curse Breaking for Beginners, are you looking to go into business with Gringotts?”

“What–” Ariel couldn’t actually see who was talking to her around the massive stack of books she was trying to bring back to the library, “I’m fi–” Before she could deny the help it had already arrived, “Oh, er, thank you,” Now that a couple of the books had been removed that did feel much better, “You’re right, don’t fancy walking around with a book shaped dent in my head.” 

“It’s no problem. These are a lot heavier than they look.” Dirk heafted the books he had taken from her up in his arms with a cheery smile. “Where were you taking these? Maybe I can help you deliver them.”

“ Do you need some help with that?” Dirk rushed up to the other person, grabbing hold of the books that were threatening to topple over in their arms. “Careful now, it’d be pretty painful if these were to fall on you.”

“i’m not okay, so no one talk to me.” marlene announced as she was walking down the hallway and saw someone about to approach her. though this didn’t have the desired effect as she was actually left alone. didn’t people know at this point that she was just being dramatic? “hello – you didn’t even ask me what’s wrong!”

Any other time Dirk would have approached anyone who said they weren’t okay, but ever since he’d been called nosy once for butting into other people’s business he had decided against interfering where he wasn’t necessary. So, in an effort to respect Marlene’s privacy he made to swerve around her but froze at her raised voice. “I’m sorry? Did you actually want me to ask? I’m confused.”

“Do you want to join in?” Eric asked with a hopeful grin, waving a hand over the intricate map set out on the table. “It’s a muggle game called Dungeons and Dragons where you go on all sorts of adventures– we’re just getting started, so you’ve still got a chance!”

“Dungeons? And Dragons? They’re a bit too big to fit in a dungeon don’t you think?” Drik questioned with a curious raise of a brow. He had to admit the detailed rendering had piqued his interest. “A chance to what exactly? Is this anything like wizards chess?”

Arthur took steady steps down the corridor, heading for the great hall. Beads of sweat rolled down his neck and into his robes— his robes, which hid all the signs of a wizard who had just been shaken to the core. His hands shook beneath the cover of his sleeves, gripping the strap of his textbook with fierce strength. The hissing sound rang in his ears, followed by the slithering scales that had escaped into the tall grass. “Fuckin’ snakes,” he mumbled. The adder by the Great Lake hadn’t even approached him, but just the sight of the serpent was enough to ruin the rest of his day. “Hate the fuckin’ things, they’re evil.”

Dirk was in a rush to get to the library on time. He had a tutoring appointment to get through and he had promised his tutor he wouldn’t be late again, but of course, it was never that simple. He’d stayed in the transfiguration classroom for far too long speaking with professor McGonagall, and in an effort not to appear rude he’d been unable to excuse himself. Hence, his fast-paced rush to the library. He was just walking down the corridor when he saw Arthur walking just ahead of him. Well, it would be rude if he didn’t at least say hello. Grinding to a halt he went up to the other boy with a grin. “Hey, Arthur! How’s it going ma- Arthur? Are you alright?”
