Kevin hesitated, but Lance’s smile was so warm and comforting. What just panged in the pit of his stomach was now dissipating, no longer roiling. He bit his lip as the adrenaline that just peaked floated down like a feather. Maybe I’m getting soft, he thought to himself. I shouldn’t have come to this school. “What’s a laugh?” Kevin asked dryly, but then his lips parted and teeth shone for a moment as he smiled.
Instinctively, he looked down at his feet, back at the lemonade spilling out of the paper cup onto the grass. “Yuh came outta nowhere, so… I think ya owe me a drink.” He looked back into the other’s brown eyes, wanting to get lost in them. He almost had to scowl to counterbalance the sweetness he felt in him, but Lance’s smile and voice had always been so tempting and contagious. “Hey uh, what’re… festivities?”
Lance grinned lopsidedly at the other boy. “My, my, Kevin Ford, did I just hear you crack a joke? Incredible.” He was tempted to throw his arm around him, but he forced himself back as he reminded himself of Kev’s powers.Instead he slipped the hand not holding his cup of whatever Julian had given him into his jeans pocket.
He felt the corner of his mouth stretch into a wider grin as he answered, “I can get you a drink, no sweat.” He nodded his head towards the direction of Julian’s hidden cooler. “C’mon then.” he started walking, keeping pace with the other mutant. “Are you serious though? About the festivities thing. And I thought I was pent up.” He let out a soft chuckle, amazed that he had managed to find someone with less life experience than himself. After his years of being a Purifier, he didn’t have much of an idea of normal life- especially when it came to what young people did. “This. A party, carnival, happy occasions. Loud ocasions.”
His eyes rested on Kev for a moment before he finally ventured, “So, uh, for a drink... You want innocent or not so much?” His lips parted as he watched him, his eyes flicking to his lips before back to his eyes. Quickly, he ducked his head so his eyes fixed on the ground instead.
