he really hates being mad, and he hates the way heâs being right now, but hyojin canât control the deep frown that borders a scowl at doyoungâs first few words â heâs not taking this seriously at all, is he?
âyes, i like to sing, and i know you do, too â but it doesnât matter how much i want to be a singer, or if i can be one. if you think i could, wouldnât you see me going to auditions? wouldnât i be under a company already?â he chokes back a breath as his volume rises even more, causing some heads to turn their way. he thinks heâs going to say something heâs going to regret â no, heâs sure of it, but itâs something he has to say. âtell me, does singing your heart out pay the bills? does being an artist give your parents less of a hard time? does selfishly going after your own dreams help the people who rely on you the most? because if so, why am i here? why am i here and not with you in the practice studio?â
somewhere, he sees a figure standing at the kitchen doorway, small and uneasy. he sees tears that never seem to stop for anything, not even for time nor dreams nor hope. he hears the sobs, feels the shame, raw and piercing, because thereâs nothing he can do with the little boy he is now. all he had was his voice and nothing else. reality is harsh. the world hurts more for some people than it does for others. and so, the trophy is on a shelf somewhere back in anyang, forgotten with adulthood. along with that little boy at the doorway, he had left it to collect dust.
voice shaking, eyes starting to feel hot and blurry, hyojin can swear that heâs almost seeing red, and although he starts to quiver, he restrains himself, speaking quietly. âbetter for me? good for me? you donât know anything about that. you donât understand me at all. youâre not shitty. you just donât know anything.â
doyoung keeps quiet and he keeps his lips pressed into a thin line. the only thing that gives any indication of his emotions is how his eyes seem to be filled with anger and heâs furrowing his eyebrows.Â
he never knew hyojin felt like that at all. and yes, he feels like heâs a terrible friend for not knowing but heâs not to blame. he refuses to be made the villain and even made guilty right now. why would hyojin let him continue speaking about stuff like this if it was hurting him? it doesnât make sense when he thinks about it.Â
he just feels like hyojin is taking out whatever frustrations he has on him and itâs unfair. doyoungâs been nothing but a good friend and to be thrown shit like this was uncalled for. he wants so badly to hate hyojin and be mad but he canât because itâs just not his fault either. itâs no oneâs fault. life just happened to unravel the way it did and thereâs not much one can do about it.Â
âno. it doesnât pay the bills... â doyoung clenched his fists and kept them on his lap afraid he might lash out at his friend if anything else were said. âi didnât realize that you felt so strongly about this, hyojin. maybe if you had talked to me, i couldâve... i couldâve helped you out. i just... arenât we friends? why couldnât you talk to me about this? do you not trust me enough?âÂ
he doesnât want to cry because nobody likes crying even if it did feel freeing afterwards. but maybe thatâs also why he canât stop the hot tears from streaming down his face. theyâre not outright sobs. just tears from anger and frustration at this situation that seemed to take a turn for the worst. âwhy is it wrong... to be selfish? itâs your life, isnât it? shouldnât your own happiness count for something? or...â
âare you just making excuses, hyojin? is that it? youâre just afraid, arenât you? you really are a coward... huh?â
