To give an idea on what happened. Chinese Real Estate development and financial investment firms were engaging in runaway speculation on housing futures and construction, forming what was clearly a bubble.

China's government instituted 3 major regulatory guard rails on those Real Estate firms to put a stop to it and basically made real estate useless as an investment commodity. As a result several Real Estate firms became insolvent and completely collapsed with housing prices cratering.

But while housing isn't something to sit on and flip for a profit like in the West, it's actually possible for for citizens to maybe actually afford living somewhere.
