MEDICINE MOVIES: SING STREET (directed by John Carney)

If you’ve been following my blog, you know that medicine movies are movies that have the power to heal me. If I’m feeling sad, or happy, or angry, or basically any emotion, I can throw on a “medicine movie” and I’m immediately cured. These films get in my soul and make feel okay about life and leave me lighter than air, reduced to tears and smiles. Sing Street is one of those, and one of the best. 

When I first watched Sing Street, I was all about the band and his romance with Raphina. And there’s a lot to be caught up with there. Raphina is such a lovely dynamic character to fall in love with, and the band members are all so unique and quirky. His relationship with his co-songwriter Eamon will always be special to me as well. The scene where he goes to Eamon’s house asking, “Do you want to write a song?” and Eamon replies, simply, “Always.” is such a tender example how to write close friendships that don’t seem heavy handed. 

However, on this most recent viewing, what really stuck out to me was the relationship between the two brothers. I think that is where this movie’s heart lies: the older brother passing the torch to his younger brother and helping him achieve what he never could. That’s so tragically beautiful. Happy Sad.
