i don’t know how many people on tumblr know about “verticals” - they’re cheaply made soap operas that are filmed vertically so you can watch them on your phone. they’re infamous in the acting world because of the poor writing and nonsensical plots - almost always has something to do with a mafia boss or a vampire or a werewolf - and they always have insane titles like “pregnant with the ceo’s baby” or “forced to marry the alpha king.” i come across tons of them on casting websites and they all have wild titles and descriptions but none of them, None of Them, have truly grabbed me like the title i saw today:

strong male/female platonic relationships!!!!!

bestie has a loving, companionable relationship with their bestie's spouse/parents/children/etc.

gentle big person has small rowdy friend

enemies to allies

extra normal person befriends very weird person and from then on revel in their own weirdness together

the quiet, intimidating person in the group unexpectedly steps out backs up tiny, outspoken underdog

when the two sweetest people in the room are best friends/lovers

anyone + unexpected baby/child

and many many more! I must add more images as I find them.

Least Favorite Despised Dynamics

male character (of any age) convinces naive female character (of any age) that she is or should be in love with him, and we're supposed to ship it

cop partners who don't trust each other and you just know the "good" one will lose badly somehow

couples who cheat on each other for the plot, but stay together

guardian/mentor abuses child for the plot and it's considered beneficial

couples/love interests that constantly insult each other, i don't get that

characters that are in any way related or have a found family relationship who end up in a romantic/sexual relationship

couple made up of a Jerk and a Pushover, and no one ever addresses it or gets involved on the gentler character's behalf

Will-they-or-won't-they is actually just tiring to me, i am tired of it, we all know they will and if they won't we're either disappointed or relieved it's finally over

rivals? characters who exist just to compete with and hate on the MC? over stupid stuff usually? myself, I can't relate

also while i’m ranting about gender i always see debate about whether girls are rewarded for being tomboys or not and it’s like. actually girls are rewarded for mirroring whatever the situation demands of them. girls can’t be too prissy and refuse to play in the creek, but girls also can’t show up to girly events covered in mud. girls can’t have makeup art as a hobby or else they’re superficial, but if they never wear makeup they’re a slob and dumpy, etc. it’s not that girls are universally rewarded or punished for being tomboys, they’re rewarded for bending over backwards to always be exactly right for any given situation and punished for breaking those boundaries. so yes a classically pretty girl who cleans up nice is rewarded when she can ALSO be a tomboy. but a girl who is a tomboy all the time is definitely punished for never being able to achieve that prerequisite feminine side. this debate is over now thanks

this is spot on. A woman's masculinity is rewarded as long as it doesn't conflict with being heteronormatively attractive and as long as the masculinity plays harmonising second fiddle to the masculinity of the men around her.
